TWENTY-FIVE years ago in Russia, Zavoisky made the first experimen tal observation of electron spin resonances; and a year later Purcell, Torrey and Pound at Harvard and Bloch, Hansen and Packard at Stanford ('The Harvard of the West') observed nuclear magnetic resonances for the first time. In both cases (ESR and NMR) the phenomena had been previously predicted, and Gorter - surely one of the most unlucky experimenters of our time - had made his noble attempts to detect magnetic resonances. Purcell et aZ. , having beaten their radar swords into scientific ploughshares, used a re 3 sonant coaxial cavity, filled the inductive part with 850 cm of paraffin, and produced a resonance with a signal-to-noise ratio of 20. They predicted that the sensitivity could be increased several hundred-fold and foresaw applications in determining magnetic mo ments, investigating spin-lattice coupling and measuring magnetic fields. Their letter reached the editor of Phys. Rev. on Christmas Eve 1945, and the basis of NMR in the solid state was laid. Bloch et aZ. , fortunately working independently, established the entirely different, crossed-coil approach to the observation of NMR in a water sample, which they doped with paramagnetic ions to reduce the relaxation times. They had laid the foundation of liquid-state NMR. Their letter to Phys. Rev. was received on 29 January 1946.

This book analyses the organisation cultures that promote Japanese Lesson Study, identifies the soul of lesson study, which is missing in other cultures, and discusses the conditions for successfully transplanting the Lesson Study to other cultures. Adopting Nonaka and Tateuchi’s (1995) SECI knowledge creation model as the analytical lens, it explores the tacit and explicit knowledge convention and creation processes in lesson study. Unpacking the mechanism of the knowledge management process and practices could assist policy makers and school administrators, educators in contextualising lesson study to their school systems. A major technological trend for large database systems has been the introduction of ever-larger mass storage systems. This allows computing centers and business data processing installations to maintain on line their program libraries, less frequently used data files, transaction logs and backup copies under unified system control. Tapes, disks and drums are classical examples of mass storage media. The more recent IBM 3851 Mass Storage Facility, part of the IBM 3850 Mass Storage System, represents a new direction in mass storage development, namely, it is two-dimensional. With the maturity of magnetic bubble technology, more sophisticated, massive, multi-trillion-bit storage systems are not far in the future. While large in capacity, mass storage systems have in general relatively long access times. Since record access probabilities are usually not uniform, various algorithms have been devised to position the records to decrease the average access time. The first two chapters of this book are devoted mainly to such algorithmic studies in linear and two-dimensional mass storage systems. In the third chapter, we view the bubble memory as more than a storage medium. In fact, we discuss different structures where routine operations, such as data rearrangement, sorting, searching, etc., can be done in the memory itself, freeing the CPU for more complicated tasks. The problems discussed in this book are combinatorial in nature.
