In the last few years the study of germinal centers of the lymphoid tissue has progressed at an accelerated pace. Questions about their role and their significance in immune responses that could not be answered, mainly because of tedmicallimitations, are presently approached experimentally from many different directions. Hypotheses, some more than half a century old, receive renewed attention. At this time, members of the Biology Division, Oak Ridge National Laboratory, U.S.A., and of the Institute of Pathology, University of Bern, Switzerland, decided to bring together workers interested in the field. The Conference was held in Bern, June 22-24, 1966, and included fifty-seven contributions which were discussed at length. The range of interest extended from phylogenesis and anatomy to studies on cell proliferation, immunohistochemistry, cancer research and radiobiology. The aim of this broad coverage was to combine all available information on the role of germinal centers in immune responses in a single package, instead of leaving it scattered around in reports dealing with divergent immunological problems. Recent years have seen a rapid development of neural network control tech niques and their successful applications. Numerous simulation studies and actual industrial implementations show that artificial neural network is a good candidate for function approximation and control system design in solving the control problems of complex nonlinear systems in the presence of different kinds of uncertainties. Many control approaches/methods, reporting inventions and control applications within the fields of adaptive control, neural control and fuzzy systems, have been published in various books, journals and conference proceedings. In spite of these remarkable advances in neural control field, due to the complexity of nonlinear systems, the present research on adaptive neural control is still focused on the development of fundamental methodologies. From a theoretical viewpoint, there is, in general, lack of a firmly mathematical basis in stability, robustness, and performance analysis of neural network adaptive control systems. This book is motivated by the need for systematic design approaches for stable adaptive control using approximation-based techniques. The main objec tives of the book are to develop stable adaptive neural control strategies, and to perform transient performance analysis of the resulted neural control systems analytically. Other linear-in-the-parameter function approximators can replace the linear-in-the-parameter neural networks in the controllers presented in the book without any difficulty, which include polynomials, splines, fuzzy systems, wavelet networks, among others. This book considers various spaces and algebras made up of functions, measures, and other objects-situated always on one or another locally compact abelian group, and studied in the light of the Fourier transform. The emphasis is on the objects themselves, and on the structure-in-detail of the spaces and algebras. A mathematician needs to know only a little about Fourier analysis on the commutative groups, and then may go many ways within the large subject of harmonic analysis-into the beautiful theory of Lie group representations, for example. But this book represents the tendency to linger on the line, and the other abelian groups, and to keep asking questions about the structures thereupon. That tendency, pursued since the early days of analysis, has defined a field of study that can boast of some impressive results, and in which there still remain unanswered questions of compelling interest. We were influenced early in our careers by the mathematicians Jean-Pierre Kahane, Yitzhak Katznelson, Paul Malliavin, Yves Meyer, Joseph Taylor, and Nicholas Varopoulos. They are among the many who have made the field a productive meeting ground of probabilistic methods, number theory, diophantine approximation, and functional analysis. Since the academic year 1967-1968, when we were visitors in Paris and Orsay, the field has continued to see interesting developments. Let us name a few. In this work constitutiL"e assumptions provide the basic data. These consist in prescribed stress-free configurations for each material point and in prescribed elastic moduli governing the response to deformation from the stress-free configuration at each material point. Everything follows from these data, ineluding the dislocations present, if any. In particular, the common boundary-value problems of linear elasticity may be set and solved for the dislocated body.

Many Americans, argues Michael C. C. Adams, think of the Civil War as more glorious, less awful, than the reality. To what extent do newly available case records bear out our conventional assumptions about the Qing legal system? Is it true, for example, that Qing courts rarely handled civil lawsuits--those concerned with disputes over land, debt, marriage, and inheritance--as official Qing representations led us to believe? Is it true that decent people did not use the courts? And is it true that magistrates generally relied more on moral predilections than on codified law in dealing with cases? Based in large part on records of 628 civil dispute cases from three counties from the 1760’s to the 1900’s, this book reexamines those widely accepted Qing representations in the light of actual practice. The Qing state would have had us believe that civil disputes were so "minor” or "trivial” that they were left largely to local residents themselves to resolve. However, case records show that such disputes actually made up a major part of the caseloads of local courts. The Qing state held that lawsuits were the result of actions of immoral men, but ethnographic information and case records reveal that when community/kin mediation failed, many common peasants resorted to the courts to assert and protect their legitimate claims. The Qing state would have had us believe that local magistrates, when they did deal with civil disputes, did so as mediators rather than judges. Actual records reveal that magistrates almost never engaged in mediation but generally adjudicated according to stipulations in the Qing code.

All this information is then integrated together to build the video's ToC (table of content) as well as the index table. Huang shows how, at the level of ideology and theory, traditional Chinese law has been rejected time and again in the past century by China's own lawmakers, first in the late Qing and the republic, then in the revolutionary and Maoist periods of the People's Republic, and finally again in the current reform era. Considering legal theory alone, modern Chinese law can only be Western law, and past Chinese law—traditional or Maoist—can have no role under the leadership's current preoccupations with modernization and marketization. But what has actually happened historically at the level of judicial practice and the daily lives of common people? In exploring this central question, Huang draws on a rich array of court records and field interviews to illustrate the surprising strength of traditional Chinese civil justice. Albeit much altered, its legacy can be traced in informal and semiformal community justice (e.g., societal and cadres mediation), as well as in multiple spheres of court-administered formal civil justice, including property rights, inheritance and old-age maintenance, and debt obligations. He also identifies the influence of Maoist justice, especially its divorce and civil court mediation practices.
