The aim is that by the end of the book, the student should be able to evaluate the research of others, to define a problem, formulate a hypothesis about it, design and carry out the experiment, apply the correct statistics, discuss the results and implications, and write it all up in a logical and sensible fashion. The principle is that old pedagogic one of learning by doing. Secondly, there is a need for an introductory text on statistics, research design and experimental work for the many students who meet psychology and social science for the first time. The initiate in behavioural science needs to gain a conceptual understanding of statistical procedures and design techniques in order to carry out his own investigations and to understand and evaluate constructively the investigations of others. However, experience has shown us that many students (and even some fellow teachers) are somewhat reluctant to study this area as they believe it is difficult and involves mathematics.

More recently, there has been a marked increase in the number of students in schools and colleges of further education taking 'A' level, '0' level and 'Ala' level psychology examinations. Psychology, too, features much more prominently in professional training schemes, and it is now quite common to encounter the subject in courses for police officers, clergy, teachers, nurses and other paramedical and caring profes sions. In the past, students had to rely extensively on a diet of psychology texts published in the USA, supplemented by a few modest British contributions, and by a number of specialist books written by scholars reflecting their particular interests. Nowadays, it is possible to point to a significantly larger number of British texts and monographs which deal with major issues in psychology, and a number of general textbooks have been written especially for school and college students preparing for GeE examinations.
This book is intended as an introductory text on stress and is aimed principally at students in the medical, para-medical and nursing professions, and for students of psychology and the social sciences. Additionally, students preparing for other 'caring' professions whose chief concern is with helping people in distress should find the book informative and instructive. Stress is a complex subject and the book will provide students with the opportunity to become acquainted with a multiplicity of topics cur rently in vogue which are subsumed under the general heading of stress. The book should also enable readers to gain some insight into the symptoms of stress in those whom they are seeking to help, and to empathize with them. A secondary objective of the book is to help readers to understand and come to terms with their own personal stress experiences, especially those which arise in connection with their professional work. The book begins by examining the nature and sources of stress, and highlights the difficulties inherent in attempting to formulate an adequate definition of the concept. There follows a survey of some of the conceptual models of stress which have been produced by researchers in the field, and a related section is also devoted to anxiety. Not all stress is harmful, and its motivational aspects are discussed. Nevertheless, a comprehensive study of the research evidence suggests that stress is detrimental to the organism's well-being, and various general causes of stress are mentioned.

A volume dealing with the regional and local history of South East England, this covers the landcape and society of the modern counties of Surrey, Kent, East and West Sussex and Greater London, south of the Thames from late Anglo-Saxon times to the present. WHEN LABELS FAIL: A PARADOXICAL VIEW OF THE SUPREME COURT As in recent actions of the Supreme Court concerning same sex marriage and the Affordable Care Act, don ́t be surprised when pundits and ideologues fail at predictions regarding pending decisions of the Court. This book explains why so many get it wrong so often. At root cause are erroneous preconceptions about the Court. "I ́m not big on labels" replied retiring Associate Justice John Paul Stevens during an interview concerning changing blocs on the Supreme Court. “I don’t use labels to describe what I do” is how Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor responded during her confirmation hearing when a senator sought to categorize her judicial philosophy. Simplistic labels for the justices have repeatedly misled Presidents, Senators, lawyers, and pundits with regard to the performance of justices on the Supreme Court. Despite best efforts to predict behavior of nominees for the Court, the justices defied political categorization, such as: • The Virginia lawyer who lost his states’ rights case before the Supreme Court, but went on to support Federalist Party causes as Chief Justice. • The ex-Federalist Party politician and Secretary of the Treasury who as Chief Justice strongly supported states’ rights. • The esteemed Massachusetts justice who outraged the progressive president who nominated him to the Court by voting to strike down key anti-trust legislation. • The co-founder of the American Civil Liberties Union who shocked former colleagues by consistently voting to curtail civil liberties and civil rights in cases before the Court. • The staunch New Deal supporter who over his long tenure on the Court came to favor individual rights and liberties over governmental power. • The former Ku Klux Klan member who helped forge a unanimous Court ruling in the seminal decision against racial segregation. • Appointed by a liberal Democratic president, the justice who steadfastly supported law and order, the right to life, and other conservative causes. • An originalist whose conservative methodology frequently leads to liberal results.
