I was born in Londonderry/Derry, into an impovrished mixed religion family during Northern Ireland's troubles. Unlike a lot of tragic characters I was never deeply affected by the countries war ravished casualties. My childhood was set against the backdrop of two aggressive and violent alcoholic parents who loved to end a weekened with an alcohol fuelled, violent domestic. Despite this weekly occurrance, I was a relatively stable and content child who feasted upon the the love given to me by my maternal granny and aunt. It was only at the tender age of 6, that my life became engulfed in fear, shock, denial, betrayal and physical and mental anguish. My childhood folly was now replaced with being raped and abused whilst struggling not to give into the lure of suicide. I placed my blind faith or desperate hope in the idea that God had a plan for me and that my life would be enjoyable, someday! That day came when I met Philip. My life pivoted towards a new direction at that time and although my struggles are daily I can at last feel supported by my family and by God. My story unfortunately will strike a chord with too many, and in contrast shock and disgust those previously untainted by sexual abuse. I now continue along my path towards happiness and the feeling of inclusion in my own life, rather than as an onlooker or passive bystander. With God's help I will continue along life's journey. At this time I have neither the confidence nor strength to put a recent photograph of myself within the book as I still hold a great deal of shame and embarrassment. I hope readers and others in my position will allow for my weaknesses.

Thomas Anthony Birrell (1924-2011) was a man of many parts. For most of his working life he was Professor of English Literature in the University of Nijmegen, The Netherlands, where he was famous for his lively, humoristic and thought-provoking lectures. He was the author of some very popular literary surveys in Dutch, one of which - a history of English literature - has had seven editions so far. However, first and foremost he was a bibliographer and a book historian. The present collection contains fifteen of his book-historical articles, two reviews and one published version of a lecture for the illustrious ’Association Internationale de Bibliophilie’. The lecture - with a wealth of illustrations - about the British Library as the ’Custodian of the Unique’ gives one a sense of Birrell’s ability to present an audience with a complicated topic in comprehensible, but not simplified, terms. The reviews serve as a statement of principle of how to tackle the subject of ’English readers and books’ and the standards that ought to apply. The articles demonstrate Tom Birrell’s in-depth knowledge, dedication and scholarship. He once said that he felt that he could have talked to the 17th-century London booksellers on an equal footing and his work convinces one that they would have enjoyed these conversations. Aspects of Book Culture was edited by Birrell’s former pupil, colleague, friend and fellow-bibliographer Jos Blom.

When Oak Park became a city in 1945, the community was not much different from the village that was carved out of Royal Oak Township 18 years earlier. Its population had barely increased, and there was just one paved road connecting Oak Park to Detroit; however, big changes were coming. Thousands of veterans returned home after World War II, started families, and bought homes with the assistance of the GI Bill. By 1950, Oak Park was recognized as Detroit's first northwest suburb. The residential character of the community was attractive to families, and in 1956 Oak Park was the nation's fastest-growing city. By 1976, the city's demographics were dramatically changing. In the 1980s, media stories focused on its extraordinary ethnic diversity within a population of 31,000. When the I-696 Freeway opened in 1990, what had once been a tiny rural village became the center of the region's network of expressways. Through all the changes, the family quality of Oak Park has endured, as illustrated by seven decades of photographs and personal recollections.

The close association between nurses and hospitals obscures the diversity and complexity of nursing work in other contexts. This collection looks at nurses and nursing in a wide range of settings from the mid-1800s to the 1970s, including indigenous women on the Canadian prairies; First World War nurses posted overseas; outpost nurses in rural and remote areas of Saskatchewan, Ontario, and Quebec; public health nurses in Winnipeg; and religious congregations in nursing education in New Brunswick. The contributors use feminist and historical perspectives to illustrate how place, understood as both social context and geographic setting, shaped nursing identities and practices. Many nurses found place both liberating and constraining � often simultaneously.
