It examines how various novelists, from Samuel Richardson to Mary Shelley, drew upon classical and early modern conceptions of true amity as a model of collaborative pedagogy. Analyzing authors, their professional circumstances, and their audiences, the study shows how the rhetoric of friendship became a means of paying deference to the increasing power of readerships, while it also served as a semi-covert means to persuade resistant readers and confront aesthetic and moral debates head on. The first to try to address the relationship between recovery from brain damage and changes in the brain that might support the recovery, this volume includes studies of humans as well as laboratory species, particularly rats. The subject matter identifies a consistent correlation between specific changes in the brain and behavioral recovery, as well as various factors such as sex and experience that influence this correlation in consistent ways. Evolving from a series of lectures given as the McEachran Lectures at the University of Alberta, this volume originally began as a summary of the lectures, but has expanded to include more background literature, allowing the reader to see the author's biases, assumptions, and hunches in a broader perspective. In writing this volume, the author had two goals in mind: * to initiate senior undergraduates or graduate psychology, biology, neuroscience or other interested students to the issues and questions regarding the nature of brain plasticity, and * to provide a monograph in the form of an extended summary of the work the author and his colleagues have done on brain plasticity and recovery of function.

Depuis quelques dizaines d’années, les pays en développement riches en ressources naturelles utilisent ces dernières en tant que garanties pour obtenir accès à des sources de financement pour leurs investissements et contourner les obstacles qu’ils rencontrent lorsqu’ils s’efforcent d’obtenir des prêts traditionnels auprès des banques ou des capitaux sur les marchés financiers. Différents modèles de financement sont issus de ces efforts, parmi lesquels le modèle des infrastructures financées par des ressources naturelles (IFR) qui est une variante des modèles de prêts garantis par le pétrole lancés en Afrique par plusieurs banques occidentales. Dans le cadre d’une transaction basée sur le modèle des infrastructures financées par des ressources naturelles (IFR), un prêt contracté pour financer la construction immédiate d’une infrastructure est garanti par la valeur actuelle nette de flux de revenus qui seront générés à l’avenir par l’extraction d’hydrocarbures ou de minerais. Le modèle a été employé dans plusieurs pays africains pour des contrats d’une valeur totale de l’ordre de 30 milliards de dollars, selon des informations publiques. Ce rapport, qui se compose d’une étude préparée par Hunton & Williams LLP, spécialiste du financement de projets à l’échelle mondiale, et de commentaires formulés par six économistes et décideurs de réputation internationale présente une analyse des marchés d’infrastructures financées par des ressources naturelles (IFR) sous l’angle du financement de projets. Il a pour objet de provoquer une réflexion de fond et de servir de base à de nouveaux travaux de recherche sur le rôle du modèle IFR, les risques qu’il pose et les perspectives qu’il offre, sans pour autant prétendre présenter des opinons des contrats IFR qui auraient l’aval de la Banque mondiale. Il est le fruit d’un effort motivé par la conviction que, si les pays doivent continuer de solliciter des transactions IFR ou de recevoir des propositions spontanées, il incombe aux représentants de l’État de pouvoir faire la différence entre de bonnes et de mauvaises opérations, d’évaluer les compromis qui sont inévitables, et d’agir en conséquence. At the start of World War One the Imperial German Navy had a large number of surface warships deployed around the world. These posed a considerable threat to British mercantile interests, particularly the import of food and fuel supplies. Their elimination was a matter of urgency. This book covers the major actions and includes the following: The escape of the Goeben and Breslau to Turkey, where they became units of the Turkish Navy serving in the Black and Aegean Seas. The remarkable cruise of the Emden. Detached from the German East Asia Squadron she sank a Russian cruiser, a French destroyer, 21 merchant ships and destroyed cargo valued at 3 million. She was cornered and sunk by the Australian cruiser Sydney while raiding the Cocos Islands. The mystery of the Karlsruhe, destroyed by an internal explosion. The German East Asiatic Squadron, consisting of the armored cruisers Schanhorst and Gneisienau and several light cruisers made passage across the Pacific to the west coast of South America where they encountered and sank two British cruisers, the Monmouth and Good Hope. The Konigsberg operated from Germanys colony of Tanga. After sinking a British cruiser she hid in the upper reaches of the Rufiji River. After a lengthy naval and air campaign by British forces she was finally destroyed by the indirect fire from two RN Monitors. By the middle of 1915 the high seas had been mostly cleared of German surface warships, but two armed German ships dominated Lake Tanganyika. Two British armed motor boats were shipped to the West African coast from England and made their way by river and overland haulage to the lake, a 400 mile journey. The result was the destruction of the German lake boats and the invasion of Tanganyika by British forces. This operation became the inspiration for CS Foresters novel The African Queen and the film that followed.

The focus is the end of the early modern period, when already the upheaval of the English Civil War, the methods of the Cambridge Platonists, and the thinking of Descartes and Spinoza were making the period one of transition, and Newtonian thought and the thought of John Locke impacted theological thought and worship forms. It is against this framework that the worship in England and Scotland will be described and assessed. As well as published and unpublished liturgical documents, this book draws on contemporary accounts and descriptions of worship, catechisms, sermons and theological works, and contemporary diaries. Musical and architectural changes are also noted, particularly the late seventeenth century hymns of Richard Davies of Rothwell, Joseph Stennett and Benjamin Keach. This book places worship in the society which it served, and from which changes sprang. It explores the interaction of cultural thought and worship, drawing parallels between the Enlightenment period and problems of late modernity and the worship wars of the late twentieth century.

The United States Merchant Marine provided the greatest sealift in history between the production army at home and the fighting forces scattered around the globe in World War II. The prewar total of 55,000 experienced mariners was increased to over 215,000 through U. S. Maritime Service training programs. Merchant ships faced danger from submarines, mines, armed raiders, and destroyers, aircraft (kamikaze), and the element. About 8,300 mariners were killed at sea, 12.00 wounded of whom at least, 1, 100 died from their wounds, and 663 men and women were taken prisoner. Some were blown to death, some incinerated, some drowned, some froze and some starved. Many died in prison camps or aboard Japanese ships while being transported to other camps. 31 ships vanished without a trace to a watery grave. ( Total killed estimated 9,300)
