Every day, managers must adapt to rapidly changing markets and situations. This book deals with sensitive or difficult projects, ranging from redundancy programs to disposal of radioactive waste, from the launch of a new product to the introduction of a new computer system. The authors use a revolutionary way to manage sensitive projects--the lateral approach. Derived from twenty years' experience working with managers, the lateral approach is a flexible and non- confrontational method that introduces change through an understanding of how people think and act. While communities and organizations often resist change even though they will benefit from it, this approach shows how projects can be successfully managed.

A Hudson Valley Reckoning tells the long-ignored story of slavery's history in upstate New York through Debra Bruno's absorbing chronicle that uncovers her Dutch ancestors' slave-holding past and leads to a deep connection with the descendants of the enslaved people her family owned. Bruno, who grew up in New York's Hudson Valley knowing little about her Dutch heritage, was shaken when a historian told her that her Dutch ancestors were almost certainly slaveholders. Driven by this knowledge, Bruno began to unearth her family's past. In the last will and testament of her ancestor, she found the first evidence: human beings bequeathed to his family along with animals and furniture. The more she expanded her family tree, the more enslavers she found. She reached out to Black Americans tracing their own ancestry, and by serendipitous luck became friends with Eleanor C. Mire, a descendent of a woman enslaved by Bruno's Dutch ancestors. A Hudson Valley Reckoning recounts Bruno's journey into the nearly forgotten history of Northern slavery and of the thousands of enslaved people brought in chains to Manhattan and the Hudson Valley. With the help of Mire, who provides a moving epilogue, Debra Bruno tells the story of white and Black lives impacted by the stain of slavery and its long legacy of racism, as she investigates the erasure of the uncomfortable truths about our family and national histories.
From cinema's beginnings filmmakers have turned to the past for their stories, so much so that in many ways our historical culture is shaped more in the movie theatre than in the classroom. Inside the Historical Film argues how and why film can enrich our understanding of the past. Bruno Ramirez discusses a wide range of films, from various historical and national contexts, pointing to the role that film-crafts play in translating historical events into cinematic language. He takes the reader through the process of conception, research, design, and production of several films that he researched and co-wrote, explaining the decisions that were made to best convey historical knowledge. The practice-based quality at the core of Ramirez's analysis is further enhanced by conversations with world-renowned film directors, including Denys Arcand, Constantin Costa-Gavras, Deepa Mehta, Renzo Rossellini, Paolo and Vittorio Taviani, and Margarethe von Trotta. Grounded in an appreciation for the interpretative value of making films and cinema's ability to reach large public audiences at personal and emotional levels, Inside the Historical Film seeks to understand historical films as both creative works and multi-layered representations of the past.
Marge never believed in in the existence of pure evil. Certainly, she placed no credence in the idea of supernatural evil, such as powerful spirits or entities from elsewhere that are capable of entering our material realm and committing horrific acts. Such fanciful notions were not part of her worldview. As Marge saw it, we already had enough vicious, hyper greedy and power hungry people in our real world, including any number of natural calamities that was enough to deal with. Who wanted to be concerned about being beset by evil imports from some netherworld? One evening in early October, Marge and four of her friends, all college seniors, set off to look through an old, vacant farmhouse as a possible site for their Halloween party. As the three young men are examining the second floor of the house, they are interrupted by the hysterical calling out to them by one of the two young female companions. She insists, rather incoherently, that something awful has happened in the cellar. She seems to think what happened was caused by some kind of fantastic, monstrous thing, which suddenly appeared out of nowhere. Of course, her friends assume she is mistaken. As the group, all go to check out the cellar, they attempt to calm her by suggesting explanations that are more logical. Marge, the other female member of this group, is also aware that something very extraordinary did happen, and she too is shaken to the core. However, she remains silent about what she experienced. Why? When put on the spot, she draws a blank. She cant think how to explain what she saw, heard and felt, without revealing the too humiliating truth of how she knows this: because she was eavesdropping at the cellar door. Had she not eavesdropped, Marge realizes she could have remained blithely unaware of the cellar incident, which is by far, what she would have preferred. She will later desperately look for logical, rational explanations for what seemed to have happened in that cellar. However, she will find further evidence that will only support what Marge didnt want to believe. Indeed, that house is host to some evil alien thing that doesnt belong in this world. The Cellar Incident will shatter Marges unquestioned concepts of what constitutes reality. The experience will haunt her dreams, torment her thoughts and force her to rethink her views on everything.
Novelist Honoré de Balzac was the first to use the phrase "Paris savant" to refer to the dynamic Parisian scientific and intellectual community of the late 18th century. The Academy of Sciences was highly active during this time, and was a meeting place for intellectual and scientific elite, who worked together toward the diffusion of scientific knowledge into Parisian society. The Royal Observatory was a headquarters for French astronomy, as well as the great geodesic project to map all of France. The Royal Mint hosted courses in chemistry and mining, and the Arsenal near the Bastille housed the laboratory of Lavoisier, the most celebrated chemist of the age. This book is the English translation of Bruno Belhoste's Paris Savant: Encounters in Enlightenment Science, originally published in France in 2011. Belhoste discusses how the Parisian scientific community came into its important place in the French Enlightenment, focusing on the Academy of Sciences. Chapters cover subjects such as what role Parisian geography played in the movement, the contributions of French scientists to industrial and urban improvement, and how the Academy of Sciences clashed with the revolutionary crisis, resulting in its closing in 1793. The translation includes a prologue for English readers.
This book scrutinizes literary works based on Judaism, Jews and their descendants, written or printed by the Portuguese, from the forced conversion of Jews in 1497, until the ending of the distinction between New and Old Christians in 1773. It tries to understand what motivated this vast literary production, its different currents, and how they evolved. Additionally, it studies the image of New Christians and seeks the reasons for the perpetuation of this perception of Jewish descendants in the Early Modern Portuguese world. The Imaginary Synagogue seeks to identify which Jews and which ‘synagogue’ those authors constructed in their texts and their reasons for doing so, and offers conclusions on the self-affirmed Catholic importance of this literary current.

GVT's strength lies in the originality of its business model, as well as its technological model." – Jean-Bernard Lévy, former CEO, Vivendi "GVT has an incredible story, leveraging its latest generation network and technology with a DNA that is highly focused on innovation." – Marco Patuano, former CEO, Telecom Italia In 1999, Shaul Shani and Amos Genish, two fearless businessmen, without any experience in the Brazilian telecommunications market, driven by a great dream but with limited capital, built GVT and took on the industry's large companies. Against all odds, the startup grew to become an important player in an industry dominated by giants, transforming itself from a small undertaking of US$ 54 thousand, into a US$9 billion company that is considered a market reference. In this book, Bruno Fernandes and Chico Barbosa highlight and analyze the events behind GVT's creation. It is a story with all the makings of a corporate thriller, revealing the moments of tension, doubt, and the extreme pressure under which the GVT executives operated as they made their way to the top of the industry. From the start, Shani and Genish faced seemingly insurmountable obstacles, such as investors' skepticism and aversion to new technology businesses, and delays in the company's IPO (Initial Public Offering). Moreover, as the company and market evolved, they had to tackle diverse management issues, expand operations to new regions and launch new businesses. Each milestone the company reached was a stepping stone in building a culture based on fiber and people. By investing in new technologies as well as in its employees, the company built a highly motivated team, able to communicate with customers in a transparent way, delivering consistent results. GVT started a new cycle when it was acquired by Telefónica in a competitive and unprecedented deal that became the biggest foreign investment in a Brazilian asset since 1980, at US$ 9 billion.
