In this acclaimed classic novel of ESP in war--praised by reviewers and readers alike as both a riveting science fiction thriller and one of the finest chronicles of the Vietnam War--young Army Nurse Mary Damico dreams the deaths of soldiers before they happen, but cannot save them. Only when she is recruited for a secret unit of other "esp talents"--one run by a rogue CIA psychiatrist who may be a "talent" himself--can she become the psychic commando she needs to be to stop the psychiatrist's insanity and save those she has come to love. Dream Baby is based on fifteen years of research, interviews with two hundred veterans of three American wars who reported paranormal experiences that kept them alive, and actual classified contingency plans to end the war in Vietnam that have still not been made public.
Charles A. Lindbergh-aviator, adventurer, author, activist, pathfinder, fighter pilot, conservationist-has been forgotten by many Americans who no longer remember the checkered legacy of the world's first true media celebrity. This book brings back to life that epic career in evocative text and hundreds of photographs, many rarely published, reawakening the careers of a man and his wife who achieved more, in more varied fields, than perhaps any couple in history. Lindbergh's epic non-stop flight from New York to Paris in a single engine aircraft was the biggest media event in the 1920s and set up the United States to become a world leader in aviation.
A deeply researched portrait of the controversial Supreme Court justice covers his career achievements, his appointment in 1986, and his resolve to support agendas from an ethical, rather than political, perspective.

This title was first published in 1992: This book compares stability and change in the political culture of the relatively new Asian democracy Japan and the much older Western democracy Britain. While the democratic polity emerged incrementally and indigenously in Britain, it was essentially a modern and in many ways foreign implant in Japan. By analysing long-term trends and recent changes in political attitudes, support for government institutions, participation, voting behaviour, and policy-making in the two polities, the authors seek to bring us a unique perspective on these two dynamic island political cultures on opposite ends of the Eurasian land mass. This study will be useful as a supplemental text in upper-level undergraduate and graduate courses in comparative political systems or political cultures, particularly those focusing on industrial democracies. It can also be used in courses on either British or Japanese politics.
This book focuses on the role of government in organizing the nation's transportation industries. As the authors show, over the course of the twentieth century transportation in the United States was as much a product of hard-fought politics, lobbying, and litigation as it was a naturally evolving system of engineering and available technology.

Now in paperback. William Desmond Taylor (1872-1922) was a leading silent film director remembered as the victim of Hollywood's most sensational unsolved murder, which shook the nation and shattered the reputations of several top Hollywood stars. Until now, Taylor's film career and leadership role in the Hollywood film industry have been completely overshadowed by the scandal of his death. By reprinting over 400 items from contemporary newspapers, magazines, and trade journals, the book reveals Taylor's life in Hollywood_from his arrival as a minor actor in 1912 until his death in 1922 as one of Hollywood's top directors. These annotated clippings and articles, many containing Taylor's own words, provide substantial insight into Hollywood life and film production during the decade that transformed Hollywood into the movie capital of the world. Included in the book is the most extensive filmography of Taylor's work ever published. Taylor's murder is also examined, including a critical analysis of two published 'solutions' to the crime.
This book is a collection of nearly 250 shortened or adapted business letters that were actually emailed, faxed, or posted. While the letters vary in complexity and length, all samples are comprised of straightforward sentences that upper intermediate readers of English as a second language should have no difficulty understanding and using. The book should also be useful for native English speakers seeking a fundamental approach to written business communication and for teachers in need of business-writing source material and exercises. The book is divided into three parts: Part 1: Letter samples and answers to the exercises (usually letter revisions). Part 2: Exercises (original letters, situational assignments, and sequencing assignments). Part 3: Hotel and travel matters.
This book emerges from a three-year Australian Research Council-funded study that asks how the formation and (d)evolution of leadership has impacted on public environmental debate. To do this, it draws on extensive news text analysis and public opinion survey data, as well as qualitative interviews with Australian and international movement actors. The volume investigates environmental leadership in a period of rapid political and media change by examining the nature, variety and scope; specifically, how it is understood and generated and how it changes over time. For the first time, the interconnected roles of leaders and media in constructing environmental issues are researched together, providing new evidence-based understandings of the people and processes driving public debate on environmental futures.

Each chapter provides the rationale for the approach, its theoretical background, practical applications, and critiques and considerations. Chapters end with a sample lesson that can be compared across approaches. Book Features: A comprehensive examination of multiple approaches to lesson planning. Guidance for teachers on when to choose various approaches, as well as how they might mix and match and blend ideas. User-friendly lesson plan templates, sample lessons, and discussion questions. An appendix with lesson plan examples written by practicing teachers across content areas and age groups.
The war between the United States and Mexico was decades in the making. Although Texas was an independent republic from 1836 to 1845, Texans retained an affiliation with the United States that virtually assured annexation at some point. Mexico's reluctance to give up Texas put it on a collision course with the United States. The Mexican War receives scant treatment in books. Most historians approach the conflict as if it were a mere prelude to the Civil War. The Mexican cession of 1848, however, rivaled the Louisiana Purchase in importance for the sheer amount of territory acquired by the United States. The dispute over slavery-which had been rendered largely academic by the Missouri Compromise-burst forth anew as Americans now faced the realization that they must make a decision over the institution's future. The political battle over the status of slavery in these new territories was the direct cause of the Crisis of 1850 and ignited sectional differences in the decade that followed. In Crisis in the Southwest: The United States, Mexico, and the Struggle over Texas, Richard Bruce Winders provides a concise, accessible overview of the Mexican War and argues that the Mexican War led directly to the Civil War by creating a political and societal crisis that drove a wedge between the North and the South. While on the surface the enemy was Mexico, in reality Americans were at odds with one another over the future of the nation, as the issue of annexation threatened to upset the balance between free and slave states. Winders also explains the military connections between the Mexican War and Civil War, since virtually every important commander in the Civil War-including Lee, Stonewall Jackson, Grant, McClellan, and Longstreet-gained his introduction to combat in Mexico. These connections are enormously significant to the way in which these generals waged war, since it was in the Mexican War that they learned their trade. Crisis in the Southwest provides readers with a clear understanding of the Mexican War and its relationship to the chain of events that ultimately led to the Civil War.

A magnificent stylist . . . a first-rate historian. Familiarity with subject matter resulting from many years of study and narrative talents exceeding those of any other Civil War historian enable him to move along swiftly and smoothly and produce a story that is informative, dramatic, and absorbingly interesting." —Dr. Bell I. Wiley, after reading the manuscript of Never Call Retreat The final volume of Bruce Catton's monumental Centennial History of the Civil War traces the war from Fredericksburg through the succeeding grim and relentless campaigns to the Courthouse at Appomattox and the death of Lincoln. This is an eloquent study of the bitterest years of the war when death slashed the country with a brutality unparalleled in the history of the United States. Through the kaleidoscope tone and temper of the struggle, two men, different in stature, but similar in dedication to their awesome tasks, grappled with the burden of being leaders both in politics and war. In the north Lincoln remained resolute in the belief that a house divided against itself could not stand. His determination and uncanny vision of the destiny of the country and its people far transcended the plaguing tensions, fears, and frustrations of his cabinet and Congress. Mr. Lincoln’s use of vast resources is brilliantly contrasted to Davis’s valiant struggle for political and economic stability in a hopelessly fragmented and underdeveloped south. Though Davis never lacked for spirit and dedication, his handicaps were severe. This was not a war to be won by static ideals and romanticism. As Mr. Lincoln managed to expand and intensify the ideals that sustained the Northern war effort, Mr. Davis was never able to enlarge the South’s. This was a war to be won by flexibility in though, strength in supplies, and battles. And so they were fought––Fredericksburg, The Wilderness, Chancellorsville, Vicksburg, Gettysburg.
Lights, Camera, Execution!: Cinematic Portrayals of Capital Punishment fills a prominent void in the existing film studies and death penalty literature. Each chapter focuses on a particular cinematic portrayal of the death penalty in the United States. Some of the analyzed films are well-known Hollywood blockbusters, such as Dead Man Walking (1995); others are more obscure, such as the made-for-television movie Murder in Coweta County (1983). By contrasting different portrayals where appropriate and identifying themes common to many of the studied films – such as the concept of dignity and the role of race (and racial discrimination) – the volume strengthens the reader’s ability to engage in comparative analysis of topics, stories, and cinematic techniques.Written by three professors with extensive experience teaching, and writing about the death penalty, film studies, and criminal justice, Lights, Camera, Execution! is deliberately designed for both classroom use and general readership.

Bipolar, Epileptic Papa and Businessman By: Bruce Bowman Having very little insight into the lives of his grandparents and parents before his birth, Bruce Bowman has written an account of his life in an effort to share his experiences with his wife of forty-eight years, three children, and ten grandchildren. Bipolar, Epileptic Papa and Businessman is that account. It begins with an overview of his family history. Born in 1948 along with his twin sister Bonnie, the two joined their other three sisters, Pat and Pam also twins, at three years old, and Julie the eldest at 6. Bruce decided at an early age he was all boy and was very independent of his four sisters. He sheds highlights on his youth and as he grows and becomes more independent. Things were quite different in the fifties and sixties and this book is interlaced with nostalgia during his life. Shortly after marriage, he was diagnosed with transient epileptic amnesia and later went through recurring bouts of bipolar depression. The depression was especially tough while running his business on Maui.

For the indigenous peoples of North America, the history of colonialism has often meant a distortion of history, even, in some cases, a loss or distorted sense of their own native practices of justice. How contemporary native communities have dealt quite differently with this dilemma is the subject of The Problem of Justice, a richly textured ethnographic study of indigenous peoples struggling to reestablish control over justice in the face of conflicting external and internal pressures. The peoples discussed in this book are the Coast Salish communities along the northwest coast of North America: the Upper Skagit Indian Tribe in Washington State, the St¢:lo Nation in British Columbia, and the South Island Tribal Council on Vancouver Island. Here we see how, despite their common heritage and close ties, each of these communities has taken a different direction in understanding and establishing a system of tribal justice. Describing the results?from the steadily expanding independence and jurisdiction of the Upper Skagit Court to the collapse of the South Island Justice Project?Bruce G. Miller advances an ethnographically informed, comparative, historically based understanding of aboriginal justice and the particular dilemmas tribal leaders and community members face. His work makes a persuasive case for an indigenous sovereignty associated with tribally controlled justice programs that recognize diversity and at the same time allow for internal dissent.
