A beautiful memoir of summer people and water creatures, which illustrates the formative effects of nature on children by an author who has forged a career caring for animals. For readers of Raynor Winn's THE SALT PATH, John Lewis-Stemple's STILL WATER and Gerald Durrell's MY FAMILY AND OTHER ANIMALS. Year after year the family returns to the lake. The children, barefoot and free, explore its sun-drenched wilderness. Bruce Fogle recounts his childhood summers spent at the family cabin by the lake. In an atmospheric new foreword, Bruce's son, wildlife presenter Ben Fogle, shares his experiences spending summers in the very same cabin. The summer Bruce turns ten seems, at first, like any other: swimming out to the raft, watching the gulls, frogs and herons, catching crayfish. But just when he thinks that life is perfect, everything begins to change, and over the course of two months both the harshness of the adult world and the patterns of the natural world reveal themselves. Barefoot at the Lake is not only a beautifully written boy's-eye view of the animals, humans and landscape of his youth, it is also delightfully funny, with a moving wisdom at its heart.
Every year, from the end of June to the end of August, Bruce and his family go to their cedar-clad cottage on the blue, wide lake. At first, this summer of 1954 seems like any other: floating in the row boat with Grace from next door, jumping off the diving raft, eating peach pie, exploring with Angus the dog, watching the seagulls, frogs and herons and catching crayfish. But just when he realizes life is perfect, everything starts to change. He’s ten, the family dynamics are shifting, and over the summer both the harshness of the adult world and the patterns of the natural world reveal themselves. By the time the weather turns he will be a different child, and will have chosen his own path to understanding the wilderness that waits behind their wooden homes. Funny, subtle and true, Barefoot at the Lake transports us to a long, hot, poignant summer.

A true crime account of a mass shooting by gangster brothers which resulted in the deaths of six police officers in Depression-era Missouri. “In all the annals of preservation of the peace there is no story that runs more gallantly than this.” —Springfield Leader, January 4, 1932 As dusk fell on a bitterly cold night during the Great Depression, a posse of ten local lawmen approached two brothers holed up in an isolated Missouri farmhouse. Minutes later, six officers were dead, three were wounded, and the outlaws had escaped. After a wild car chase through Oklahoma and across Texas, police finally surrounded Harry and Jennings Young in their Houston hideout. The brutal killings attracted the national press (at first Pretty Boy Floyd was rumored to be involved) and the “carnival of carnage” that became known as the Young Brothers Massacre represented the highest number of law enforcement officers killed on a single day until September 11, 2001. Even in the hardscrabble Ozarks, a region historically known for frontier justice and vigilante activity, these crimes caused a sensation, and the Young brothers briefly joined the ranks of infamy with Bonnie and Clyde and other famous outlaws. Author Bruce Davis, a third-generation Methodist minister from Springfield, Missouri, became fascinated with this forgotten case after noticing a memorial to the six fallen police officers in his local police station. He has devoted this account, his first book, to telling the whole story and honoring the brave lawmen who died in their attempts to exact justice.

On September 15, 1964, ABC launched a programming experiment--a prime time series similar to the daytime soap operas that were so successful. Peyton Place became a fixture on the network's schedule for the next five years. The success of Dallas in the early 1980s made the prime time soap opera a staple of television programming. From Bare Essence through The Yellow Rose, this reference work details the successes and failures of 37 prime time serials through 1993. For each show, a lengthy history covers the character development and provides production details, and season-by-season data provide start and end of the season, time slot, comprehensive cast and credits, and an episode guide.

The book asks readers to adopt a critical and comprehensive view of education (pre-K to lifelong learning) as existing both within classroom walls, and in the surrounding world, including communities and workplaces. It presents an integrated view of online learning, community schools, communiversities, and learning through work. Our educational systems are organized in ways that make this integration difficult. We have elaborate systems of formal instruction––academies, schools, universities, and training institutes––all to facilitate learning within the walls. At the same time we have ample opportunities for learning in the wild. Unfortunately these systems diverge to the point that they do little to support learning that allows us to draw from both of the realms of knowledge. But it is possible to bring together learning within the walls with that beyond the walls. Moreover it is crucial to make these connections in the world of today. In order to bring together the classroom and daily life we need an educational system that does that as well. The book provides a coherent account of how schooling can and should relate to learning beyond the classroom walls.
The Caucasus region of Eurasia, wedged in between the Black and Caspian Seas, encompasses the modern territories of Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Georgia, as well as the troubled republic of Chechnya in southern Russia. A site of invasion, conquest, and resistance since the onset of historical record, it has earned a reputation for fearsome violence and isolated mountain redoubts closed to outsiders. Over extended efforts to control the Caucasus area, Russians have long mythologized stories of their countrymen taken captive by bands of mountain brigands. In The Captive and the Gift, the anthropologist Bruce Grant explores the long relationship between Russia and the Caucasus and the means by which sovereignty has been exercised in this contested area. Taking his lead from Aleksandr Pushkin's 1822 poem "Prisoner of the Caucasus," Grant explores the extraordinary resonances of the themes of violence, captivity, and empire in the Caucasus through mythology, poetry, short stories, ballet, opera, and film. Grant argues that while the recurring Russian captivity narrative reflected a wide range of political positions, it most often and compellingly suggested a vision of Caucasus peoples as thankless, lawless subjects of empire who were unwilling to acknowledge and accept the gifts of civilization and protection extended by Russian leaders.Drawing on years of field and archival research, Grant moves beyond myth and mass culture to suggest how real-life Caucasus practices of exchange, by contrast, aimed to control and diminish rather than unleash and increase violence. The result is a historical anthropology of sovereign forms that underscores how enduring popular narratives and close readings of ritual practices can shed light on the management of pluralism in long-fraught world areas.
Soldier, sea captain, freebooter, courtier, writer, reformer, and informer, Barnaby Rich was a man of his time. In the service of Queen Elizabeth, Rich took part in numerous campaigns fraught with hardship and disaster in France, the Low Countries, and Ireland. After twenty years of soldiering, he wrote Riche His Farewell to Militarie Profession, which attracted the attention of the Queen herself, as well as William Shakespeare and many of the lesser among his contemporaries. "I have preferred to be rich rather than to be called so," punned the Captain ruefully on his title pages, for he was usually in want and as often in trouble. The source of both misfortunes was his disdain for dodging a fight, and much that is known of his life comes from unpublished records of legal actions in which he was involved. Rich directed his satire primarily against the sinecures of the Anglican clergy in Ireland and against the papacy. "Sworne man" of both Elizabeth and James, he protested near the end of his life that his assaults with pike and pen were but the promptings of a "true harted subjecte." Born in an age bright with stars, Rich must be considered a "minor" Elizabethan. Therein lies the novelty of this study: it treats the not-so-great, using unpublished court records to enrich our knowledge of Great Britain's grandest era. But the story of the man is not lost in the background of the period. With freshness and charm the present volume disinters Barnaby Rich from the footnote crediting him as Shakespeare's source for the plot of Twelfth Night and fleshes him forth a live Elizabethan.
This comprehensive survey of British colonial governors' houses and buildings used as state houses or capitols in the North American colonies begins with the founding of the Virginia Colony and ends with American independence. In addition to the 13 colonies that became the United States in 1783, the study includes three colonies in present-day Florida and Canada--East Florida, West Florida and the Province of Quebec--obtained by Great Britain after the French and Indian War.
There's a reason diets don't work. Science has shown that a class of carbohydrates, called “Addictocarbs," light up the brain's pleasure centers and make it almost impossible to moderate eating. If you're struggling to lose weight, counting calories and shrinking portions are not the answer. The answer lies in how your brain reacts when you eat certain foods—foods that directly stimulate the addiction center of the brain, causing irresistible cravings. But there's a way to overcome this addiction. It's called The Addictocarb Diet, and it's a cure—not a fad. After losing his father at an early age to obesity-related illness and a lifetime of struggling with his own weight and diabetes as a result, Bruce Roseman, M.D., transformed his life and the lives of close to a thousand of his patients with a simple and effective diet based on the latest findings in addiction neuroscience. The Addictocarb Diet: Avoid the 9 Highly Addictive Carbs While Eating Anything Else You Want explains that obesity stems from our addiction to these nine carbs, proven by new brain imaging techniques from the emerging field of addiction neuroscience. Once dieters accept the addiction—and treat it like such—losing weight and keeping it off is almost effortless. After reframing the way we look at cravings for unhealthful food, Dr. Roseman presents readers with a comprehensive, three-step diet: Shaking the Addiction, Addictocarb Rehab, and finally, Staying Slim. On the The Addictocarb Diet, you can eat many healthy, flavorful things, including fruits, nuts, vegetables, cheese, fish, chicken, beef, and even Addictocarb Alternatives, foods that look and taste like Addictocarbs but are much healthier. Unlike the trendy, throwaway fad diets, The Addictocarb Diet improves your overall health and can be beneficial for almost anyone, including those with gluten or lactose sensitivities, vegetarians, those with prostate problems, diabetes, and other ailments, and even those just looking to just get rid of that spare tire. The Addictocarb Diet gives you tools for success, containing tips for how to handle dietary lapses, how to navigate fast food challenges, managing or avoiding diabetes, as well as answers to frequently asked questions from hundreds of patient inquiries. You'll also find sample recipes from Dr. Roseman and his patients, suggested menus, along with the helpful Addictocarb Diet Self-Assessment Tool. Losing weight doesn't have to be a losing battle. It's time to overcome your addiction to foods. The Addictocarb Diet is here.
