Canadian sports were turned on their head during the years between the world wars. The middle-class amateur men's organizations which dominated Canadian sports since the mid-nineteenth century steadily lost ground, swamped by the rise of consumer culture and badly battered and split by the depression. In The Struggle for Canadian Sport, Bruce Kidd illuminates the complex and fractious process that produced the familiar contours of Canadian sport today – the hegemony of continental cartels like the NHL, the enormous ideological power of the media, the shadowed participation of women in sports, and the strong nationalism of the amateur Olympic sports bodies. Kidd focuses on four major Canadian organizations of the interwar period: the Amateur Athletic Union, the Women's Amateur Athletic Federation, the Workers' Sport Association, and the National Hockey League. Each of these organizations became focal points of debate and political activity, and they often struggled with each other. Each had a radically different agenda: the AAU sought “the making of men” and the strengthening of English-Canadian nationalism; the WAAF promoted the health and well-being of sportswomen; the WSA was a vehicle for socialism; and the NHL was concerned with lucrative spectacles. These national organizations stimulated and steered many of the resources available for sport and contributed significantly to the expansion of opportunities. They enjoyed far more power than other Canadian cultural organizations of the period, and they attempted to manipulate both the direction and philosophy of Canadian athletics. Through their control of the rules and prestigious events and their countless interventions in the mass media, they shaped the dominant practices and coined the very language with which Canadians discussed what sports should mean. The success and outcome of each group, as well as their confrontations with one another were crucial in shaping modern Canadian sports. The Struggle for Canadian Sport adds to our understanding of the material and social conditions under which people created and elaborated sports and the contested ideological terrain on which sports were played and interpreted.

Abstract: A population of one billion people has the potential for enormous impact on the world food supply, but demographic and food production data for the People's Republic of China have been difficult to obtain. In an effort to fill this gap, two papers are presented which attempt ot synthesize and analyze as much information as is available and make predictions of probable trends in agriculture and related fields in the year 2000 and for the 1985 grain program. Records from 1952-77 are used to estimate cultivated land, animals, energy consumption, farm machinery, fertilizer, and output of grains, soybeans and cotton. The effects of industrailization and resources are considered. Trends are toward population control, although total demand will continue to grow; emphasis on agriculture seems to indicate that production will be capable of keeping up with demand, may result in some dietary improvement, but will not provide for emergency supplies.

The book examines the relationships that governed Cleburne's actions, particularly those with Braxton Bragg, William Hardee, and John B. Hood. Their thoughts, as well as the official policies in Richmond, were pivotal in his Civil War career. Battles and movements are explained in an objective light, exposing his triumphs as well as his failures, his assets as well as his shortcomings. While correspondence from Cleburne's superiors reveals their confidence in his ability, the ultimate lack of a well-deserved promotion is explored in great depth. Accounts and letters from soldiers in the ranks present a picture of the general in the field as seen by his own men. The result has been an analysis of a man unappreciated by his own government, yet widely regarded as the finest infantry officer in the Western Theatre.

I remember the first time I met John, or Johnny B as most folks referred to him - it was at his daughter, Melodys wedding rehearsal, where I was best man for my friend Jeff. John was dressed in his best attire - new blue work pants with suspenders, blue suit with a white shirt and a navy colored neck tie. He had difficulty finding shirts with a large enough neck, so instead of the top button holding his shirt collar together, the task was forfeited to the necktie. He and his wife Anne had married a bit later in life, as did both his daughters, so he was 79 years old at the time of Melodys wedding. Anne told him, with a voice still slightly tainted with a Slovak accent, Papa, when you walk Melody down the isle, walk straight. Don't walk like an old man. John looked at her over his glasses and said, I AM an old man.

Ivan Sergeevich Gagarin analyzes questions of nationality and religious identity in nineteenth-century Russian history as reflected in the life of Jesuit priest Ivan Gagarin. A descendent of one of Russia’s most ancient and politically powerful families, Father Ivan Gagarin, S.J. (1814–1882) dedicated his life to creating a union between the Orthodox and Catholic churches that would preserve the dogmatic and traditional beliefs of both. Traditional understandings of Russian identity have emanated from the perspective of the dominant Orthodox religion; this captivating study uses the unionist work of Gagarin to illumine Russia's national identity from the perspective of Roman Catholicism. Seeing his unionist proposals as necessary for the preservation of Russian stability, Gagarin found himself in frequent opposition to the Orthodox Church. While Gagarin believed that Church union would preserve Russia from the threats of communism and revolution, the Russian Orthodox Church believed that union would mean the sacrifice of religious truth, ecclesial independence and religious orthodoxy. Jeffrey Beshoner’s even-handed analysis reveals that the Roman Catholic Church presented its own share of barriers to attempts at church union. Ivan Sergeevich Gagarin examines Roman Catholic attitudes of superiority vis-à-vis the Orthodox Church and argues that the nineteenth-century Roman Catholic Church simply did not possess the humility or respect for Eastern beliefs that church union required. Despite the failure of his unionist activity, Gagarin exerted important influence on such contemporary and later Roman Catholic and Russian thinkers as Pope Pius IX, Alexei Khomiakov and Vladimir Solovev. As the collapse of communism has permitted Russia to again seek its national identity in Russian Orthodoxy, Gagarin's ideas and perspectives on the relationship between national and religious identity continue to prove relevant.
