This work contains the heretofore unpublished memoirs of Brother Gilbert (a.k.a. Philip F. Cairnes), the Xaverian brother generally credited with steering the Babe to his first professional contract. Ruth was raised by the Xaverian Brothers, a Catholic religious order, at St. Mary's Industrial School from 1902 (when he was only 7) until 1914. These reminiscences begin with Babe Ruth's departure from St. Mary's and concentrate on his early playing years. An historical introduction by the editor of these memoirs, Harry Rothgerber, details the history and relationship that existed between this organization of Catholic educators and the man who was to become the most influential baseball player and greatest slugger who ever lived. Brother John Joseph Sterne, the book's forewordist, recounts a St. Mary's band fundraising trip in which the band accompanied the Yankees through the American League cities at the end of the 1920 season. Several previously unpublished photos from the Xaverian Order complement the text.
The author Big Bro. Earl Roberts like many others has been on a spiritual quest for understanding for many years. His new book (first novel) of spiritual fiction had been in the process of becoming for many years. Lee Roys Heaven is an attempt to convey to the masses the possibility of and necessity of people having more love and compassion in their lives. Perhaps, looking at some traditional religious doctrines in a whole new way and concluding that what we dont know about Gods truth is just as important as that which we believe we do know. This story of the adventures of a young (deceased) dope-seller tripping through his after death existence forces the readers to contemplate their lives, true love, forgiveness, patience and tolerance for other human beings that we judge as evil, sick with sinful natures, or strangely different then ourselves.
Adelphos Mou (My Brother) is the story of an attempt to fix a football game by a downtrodden Greek-American gambler. To cover his marker with a violent Mafia family, he approaches his late father’s old bookmaking partner, now with a son who has become a star college football quarterback. The quarterback prepares for the last game of his career, a meaningless game in which his team is heavily favored. Shaving points would be very easy if father and son were to go along. They refuse. They know such an act would put the young quarterback’s promising professional career in serious jeopardy. Things quickly unravel for all involved leading to acts of betrayal and murder. The father (Big George), his son (Niko) the quarterback and the brother (Stavros) face tests of love, honor, loyalty and revenge. Adelphos Mou is a story of love, tradition, karma and injustice. The main characters are first and second generation Greek-Americans who face the conflict of their ancient traditions against the culture of the modern world. The story is thickly plotted with characters like a chorus in a classic Greek tragedy. The story begins in the underworld of Pittsburgh, winds through New York, London, Las Vegas, Iceland and Greece. The characters, each tainted and impure in their own ways, act upon their motivations, both honorable and selfish.
Helping orphaned and disadvantaged boys get a chance at a better life was the mission of Brother James, founder of the Franciscan Brothers of the Holy Cross, a German Catholic Order that sent Brothers to the United States in 1924. To that end, St. James Trade School was established in Springfield, Illinois, in 1928. Two years later, the first group of apprentices was admitted; they and hundreds who followed them through 1972 went on to become certified mechanics, carpenters, and electricians among other valuable trades. High school diplomas were earned beginning in 1948. In 1975, Brother James Court (BJC) opened with a brand new building specifically designed as a residential intermediate care facility. BJC provides both residency and advocacy for developmentally disabled men. Providing the highest quality care, consistent with the spirit and principles of the Franciscan Brothers of the Holy Cross, programs at BJC meet residents needs and allow them to live happily at BJC for as long as they need.
Is the Christian faith something that can peacefully exist alongside all the other aspects of an ordinary human life, or does it by its very nature turn that life into something else? The author of this book, a member of a monastic community for over forty years, obviously has a vested interest in the answer. But even for believers caught up in the day-to-day life of society, work, and family, the question is an important one, at least if they are seeking a measure of consistency in the life they are living. And does not the very fact that the question of the importance and urgency of faith needs to be asked witness to the eclipse of an eschatological outlook among Christians, at any rate in the mainstream Churches? Could this oversight not explain why an eschatological understanding of faith, one which sees it as a radical, world-changing reality, has been forced to take refuge, often deformed to the point of being unrecognizable, in small “fanatical” groups on the margins of the Christian world?

As a first-time writer, I found it difficult to put into words what I believed was the Lord knocking on the door of a receptive believer, servant, and witness. The inspiration for this book came when I prayed to the Lord. He answered, and the Holy Spirit did what only the Holy Spirit can and will do. Unlike most people, I was abandoned as a child and never did well in school. However, at a young age, I found the Lord, or should I say, he found me. I questioned what could he have done to be nailed to a cross and to manifest into flesh from the Spirit through sheer pure will, purpose, and authority. Every day, we encounter deception of the enemy or Satan. In this writing, I hope to show the lost that Reject, Deny, and Dismiss the signs of the times. Think of the Bible (Basic instructions before leaving earth). It is here I present the issues of God in a way that is reasonable enough for anyone to conclude that there is more than anyone can or ever will believe. Think of Proverbs 23:7, Matthew 6:33, and Luke 18:17. A noteworthy pastor with experience and at least a doctorate degree in divinity is usually the only one who can write at this level. However, I disagree and say they won’t reference Romans 2:11. The events we are currently witnessing and experiencing are clearly the wrath of God. I believe that nothing short of an open collective prayer initiative is the only thing that may save our nation. For those of us who still believe, we are of the people, by the people, and for the people, yet no one ever looked at the title when the US was referred to as the great Satan. It is because of the acronym USA, which stands for Under Satan’s Authority. Now the secret is out, so we obey God and live in peace. When you see these things, you know that they are a sign that the end of time is at hand.
The Angel and the Rowboat is about how God picks up a teenage boy and his rowboat and puts him in different stories of the Bible. But he can also see behind the scenes: the angels and the demons who influence those events; the animosity between St. Michael and Lucifer; the war between Heaven and Hell. He witnesses the creation of the world, the salvation of the world and key events in between. In the storys climax, we witness the Crucifixion and Resurrection from Hells perspective. For three days, they think theyve won but then, of course, we witness the Harrowing of Hell ~ the Catholic term for when Christ plunged down deep into Hades and rescued the souls who had been held captive there since the beginning of time, and then leads them in a triumphal procession back up into Heaven. It is the ultimate tale of redemption.
This bookexposes the true nature and culture of fraternities and sororities. In these secret societies there are activities and requirements that cause prospective members and members aliketo unknowingly enter into ungodly pacts and covenants. These ungodly practices lead to activities which include physical abuse, fornication, adultery, hatred, envy, strife, manipulation, social and intellectual elitism, abominable sexual activities and witchcraft. These organizationsattract people that are looking for something that only Christ Jesus can provide. However, the organizations appears as a light by their community service and networking abilities. This light however is afalse light.Once one gets into the inner workings of the organizations, the sin and soul inflicting antics are found deeply rooted in darkness. The authorsbeing former members that participated in ungodly activities within these organizations expose the physical, mental, sexualand spiritualdeath-dealing activities found in fraternities and sororities. This is by no means a kiss and tell composition, but it is a trying to save people from hell exposition. Actual accounts of sexual requirements, abuse, ancient ungodly spiritual practices, witchcraft, and required chantswhich denouncetheexistence the One True God are given in detail in this book.Ungodly spirits of oldhave found new vessels to operate inthrough these fraternities and sororities. The good thing about this book is that it not only exposes spiritual wickedness and old ungodly practices, but it shows people who want to be free how to find God, the Ancient of Days.Let the Truth be told. We encourage you to read this book if you arejoining a fraternity or sorority, are a member of one, are apastor, orhave a loved one in one of these organizations. We desire for all to be free and blessed by this book.
From her early years, Thérèse of Lisieux desired to be a saint, so the primary focus of her life was to walk the path of love—what she called “the science of love.” But she often asked herself if her love was pure and authentic. With sensitivity and insight, author Joseph Schmidt shows us how Thérèse discovered certain qualities of the heart that told her that she was indeed walking the path of authentic love. These qualities—inner freedom, creativity, compassion, willingness, self-surrender or abandonment, and gratefulness—“opened her heart to a new depth of God’s life in and through her.” Eventually, they played a very practical role in Thérèse’s ordinary day-to-day life relationships—and they can in our own as well. As he did in his earlier book on Thérèse, Everything Is Grace, Joseph Schmidt breaks new ground in his latest book and offers tremendous food for thought and reflection on the spirituality of this great saint.
Every Day Counts contains 366 daily devotionals that allows the reader to either work through the devotionals on a daily basis using the page date, or alternatively, the number sequence provided. These books of Poems have received great reviews from both Carmelite and Franciscan Community Ministers, Diocesan Priests, and everyday Catholics who recommend it as a means of spiritual growth and a great source for devotions. Two ministers of Franciscan and Carmelite communities, priests, and publishing houses most strongly urged these books be published for use as devotionals; so following their advice he has done this with the assistance of AuthorHouse.
This book was cooked in the cauldron of an active life. No Ivory Tower studiousness here! Like a good Cajun Gumbo, the ingredients come from many facets of life. Family relationships, ministry, health and illness, birth and death, joy and depression, success and pathos are all ingredients in our lives. The roux is our relationship with our Creator. Christianity is simply the relationship between our Heavenly Father and people. The Good News is simple, fishermen and commonfolk have often understood that better than scholars. Master chefs can make haute cuisine, but for me nothing beats good old country cooking. Theologians are master chefs. I'm a fisherman. My recipe for life is found in this book. God is good. He loves you. Love God,and love people. Use this recipe and enjoy life with God.
This lovely book presents essays and recent works in porcelain by Brother Thomas Bezanson, praised as "one of the greatest artists in the Western pottery world" by well-known Japanese ceramicist Tatsuzo Shimaoka. Brother Thomas explores his faith and the process of creation side by side with illustrations of the celebrated porcelain vases, plates, and tea bowls that are his life's work. The book also contains a nineteen-page photo essay on Brother Thomas at work in his studio by Bill Aron of Los Angeles, an introduction by Joan Chittister, and an illustrated index of the works of Brother Thomas now held in more than fifty museum collections around the world.
In this irreverent take on life and beliefs, Brother Bob relates his every day journey to (and philosophy of) Love. Whether you think he's full of BS or not, every word is true. Seekers may find this book interesting, others feel free to laugh.
This book has been inspired by readings received from Jesus starting in 1932, by two ladies that were living in England who were suffering through hard times. Jesus came to the ladies each day for a year with messages of encouragement. Each reading has been compressed into a shorter version, a thought that can be carried through a normal work day that helps you focus on Jesus and the love that He has for you. Each reading is up to your own interpretation and belief. Read one thought a day, think about its meaning, and remember He was counseling these ladies. His guidance is such that you too can use it.
In your hands, you hold a book that will give you an insight into the spirit world, and will tell you what happens to the mortal at time of death. As mortals, we fail to understand how short life is, because an 80-year life only equates to two hours of God's time, as per Psalm 90:4, and 2Peter 3:8. It is only when we reach the spirit world that our real life will begin. The purpose of this book is to introduce you to the spirit world, by using excerpts from spiritual messages received by a Celestial Medium, a Mr. James E. Padgett in Washington D.C., starting in 1914. Mr. Padgett had a special gift of automatic writing, the ability to receive messages from spirits transmitted through his brain and hand. During the last ten years of his life he received some 2,500 messages, and I have read over 500. What makes these messages so special, they come from spirits living in the spirit world, and tell you how it is structured, and about God's great gift of Divine Love - the love from his soul to yours. This was a gift first given to our parents in the Garden of Eden, but was rejected. Jesus brought this gift back to man giving man the ability to be saved, because it removes sin. I only ask that you open your mind, explore this book, and read the excerpts analyzing each by using common sense.
This anthology is a compilation of Westerners’ accounts of their visits to Korea, originally published in books or newspapers before the country opened its doors in the late nineteenth century. The opening of Korea made it possible to explore the country in detail and write detailed accounts. Prior impressions were garnered mostly from brief visits to remote islands along the coast. The accounts published here are mainly anecdotal, and contain many generalizations. However, the accumulated impressions of these early encounters surely influenced the perspectives of later travelers, and help explain the overwhelmingly negative image of Korea that Western governments harbored at the time. The book can serve as a useful resource for studying Korea’s early interactions with the outside world, and will give readers an idea of the criteria by which Westerners judged the foreign “other.”
