ABCs for Bully Prevention: Simple as 1, 2, 3 Workbook can be used as a companion with the book of the same title. The workbook was developed to meet "common core" standards. In the book, ABC's for Bully Prevention: Simple as 1,2,3, there are thirty-nine words arranged alphabetically that explore the many aspects of bullying. The accompanying workbook is arranged in the same alphabetical format, offering users an exercise for each word highlighted in the book. The exercises are designed so they can be completed independently and in group discussion.
This collection looks at the post–network television industry’s heady experiments with new forms of interactive storytelling—or wired TV—that took place from 2005 to 2010 as the networks responded to the introduction of broadband into the majority of homes and the proliferation of popular, participatory Web 2.0 companies like Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter. Contributors address a wide range of issues, from the networks’ sporadic efforts to engage fans using transmedia storytelling to the production inefficiencies that continue to dog network television to the impact of multimedia convergence and multinational, corporate conglomeration on entrepreneurial creativity. With essays from such top scholars as Henry Jenkins, John T. Caldwell, and Jonathan Gray and from new and exciting voices emerging in this field, Wired TV elucidates the myriad new digital threats and the equal number of digital opportunities that have become part and parcel of today’s post-network era. Readers will quickly recognize the familiar television franchises on which the contributors focus— including Lost, The Office, Entourage, Battlestar Gallactica, The L Word, and Heroes—in order to reveal their impact on an industry in transition. Jeff Becker is a computer programmer who in 2008 decided to see for himself if the extraterrestrial presence was real. The experiences leading up to that decision, and those that followed, were life changing. After attending CSETI Ambassador to the Universe training in the fall of 2008, the ETs “followed him home.” He has organized a local contact group and has been having regular contact ever since. His story is just one chapter in this book. His experiences are far from unique. Paths to Contact: True Stories from the Contact Underground, is about people like him, ordinary people having extraordinary experiences. These people are doctors, computer programmers, sanitation and postal workers, healers, meteorologists, biologists, pilots, artists, engineers – people from many different walks of life. They have each volunteered to tell their story of extraterrestrial contact and how it has affected their life. When Becker floated the idea for this book project in December of 2011, the responses from so many people eager to tell their stories convinced him that the project would be a success. This has been a team effort, with most people doing their own writing and telling their story in their own words. Most of these stories involve human initiated contact. That's right, these are people who go out under the stars and ask for contact, and it happens with amazing reliability when done correctly. Perhaps these stories will inspire you to embark on your own path to contact. Reconstruction-era literature helped shape an ongoing national debate about proper remedies to racial wrongs. In this powerful book, Brook Thomas revisits the contested era of Reconstruction. He evokes literature’s immediacy to recreate arguments still unresolved today about state versus federal authority, the government’s role in education, the growing power of banks and corporations, the paternalism of social welfare, efforts to combat domestic terrorism, and the difficult question of who should rightly inherit the nation’s past. Literature, Thomas argues, enables us to re-experience how Reconstruction was—and remains—a moral, economic, and political debate about which world should have emerged after the Civil War to mark the birth of a new nation. Drawing on neglected nineteenth-century historiographies and recent scholarship that extends the dates of Reconstruction in time while stretching its geographic reach beyond the South, The Literature of Reconstruction uses literary works to trace the complicated interrelations among the era’s forces. Thomas also explores how these works bring into dialogue competing visions of possible worlds through chapters on reconciliation, federalism, the Ku Klux Klan, railroads, and inheritance. He contrasts well-known writers, including W. E. B. Du Bois, Thomas Dixon, and Charles W. Chesnutt, with relatively neglected ones, including Albion W. Tourgée, María Amparo Ruiz de Burton, and Constance Fenimore Woolson. Some authors opposed Reconstruction; others supported it; and still others struggled with mixed feelings.
