In a work that draws on anthropology, history, philosophy, business, and law, Bronwyn Parry links a firsthand investigation of the operation of the bioprospecting industry to an analysis of broader economic, regulatory, and technological transformations: the rise of an information economy, global intellectual property rights and benefit-sharing regimes, and the progressive molecularization of approaches to biological research. Parry reveals how a failure to monitor this new global trade in bio-information could have potentially disastrous consequences for the suppliers of genetic and biochemical resources - transforming the complex dynamics of collecting, as well as the politics and practice of biological resource exploitation."--BOOK JACKET.

‘A deeply moving and profoundly important account not only of one soldier’s survival, but of optimism, courage, of a dogged determination to succeed whatever it takes, and of the enduring power of love between a mother and her son. The lessons for us all in this book are immeasurably powerful. It offers hope to the many whose lives have been changed forever, directly or indirectly, be that as a result of war, or through accident. I am so very grateful to have read it.’ Major General David Rutherford-Jones CB ‘This is an astonishing true story that no work of fiction could ever match. A brave soldier is blown up by the Taliban, losing both legs, part of his left hand and his lungs are crushed. There is, seemingly, no hope of survival. Except that death hadn’t reckoned on the fortitude and resilience of Cayle Royce, underpinned by the all-embracing love and dedication of his remarkable mother Bronwyn. The book is told by both of them and might be the most moving and joyous account of determination against all odds you will ever read. A triumph of the Human Spirit.’ Alan Frame, Author ‘A story of fortitude and courage from the perspective of both a mother and son. From the depths of despair of a near death experience through to an amazing recovery with a row across the Atlantic as skipper of an all amputee crew of ex servicemen, four guys with three legs between them!’ Brigadier Chris Dick CBE Thousands of miles away from where her son was deployed, a powerful premonition is devastatingly confirmed by a knock on the door from two faceless strangers bearing the news that her son had stepped on an improvised explosive device in the poppy fields of Afghanistan. He had lost both of his legs and suffered multiple other injuries, including partial amputation of all the fingers of his left hand. For 48 days she stood at his bedside, praying and willing him to pull through. Not only did he survive against all odds, but in time he began to test the limits of his new capabilities and undertook the first of, what would prove to be, many physical challenges. Just 18 months after injury, and as part of a team of four servicemen, he rowed across the Atlantic Ocean for the first time. Told mostly from a mother’s perspective with contributions from Cayle, the genesis of the book was in the diary she kept while he was in a medically induced coma. It is the story of an extraordinarily brave man who has been through the agonies of rebuilding his life, with the encouragement of family and friends. This was never meant to be another book about war or Afghanistan; it is a message of how love and hope can overcome adversity. If even just one reader takes inspiration from this story then … mission accomplished.
The art of fencing, like the art of love, requires three important skills: 1. Anticipating your partner's every move, working them into the exact position you desire. 2. Being completely attuned to each other's bodies. 3. Absolute dedication, no matter how many hours are spent sweating it out. Viscount Amersham has come to Paris to prove his skill with the blade. But feisty Alyssandra Leodegrance is not the opponent he was expecting! As expert swordplay leads to sizzling sensuality, it's difficult to say who will win…and what they will claim as their prize! Rakes on Tour Outrageous hell-raisers let loose in Europe!

From the international award-winning Australian writer Bronwyn Parry comes a gripping novel of love and suspense - the second in her Dungirri series. Dark Country was voted Favourite Romantic Suspense Novel by the Australian Romance Readers Association. They've considered him a murderer for eighteen years, so no one in Dungirri is surprised when 'Gil' Gillespie returns and a woman's body is found in his car. Wearied by too many deaths and doubting her own skills, local police sergeant Kris Mathews isn't sure whether Gil is a decent man wronged by life, or a hardened criminal she should lock up. She does know he's not guilty of this murder, though, because she is his alibi. Gil isn't used to feeling anything for anyone. But there's a teenager here who has his eyes - a daughter he never knew existed. And the sergeant's fiery tenacity stirs his blood. He can't acknowledge either. He's made too many enemies in the Sydney Mafia and amongst corrupt cops. Kris's alibi might have saved him from a murder charge but her dedication to finding the truth has made her a target. Gil is surrounded by wilderness, but there's no place to hide because his enemies have most of the town on their side, and they know that the one thing most punishing would be harming the few people he cares about. The other novels in Bronwyn Parry's gripping Dungirri series are As Darkness Falls and Darkening Skies. Praise for Dark Country: 'there is a strong romantic plotline even while the suspense is so well maintained the novels [As Darkness Falls and Dark Country] qualify as rattlingly good crime reads -- The Australian 'A great thriller ... Despite a century of effort, criminologists do not yet fully understand the relationship between disadvantage and crime. The balance of evidence suggests that economic and social stress increase the risk of involvement in crime by increasing the motivation to offend. But there are a number of empirical anomalies that cannot easily be reconciled with this interpretation of the evidence. Weatherburn and Lind argue that the transmission mechanism linking economic and social stress to crime is not offender motivation but disruption to the parenting process. They put forward an epidemic model of the genesis of delinquent-prone communities and show how this model resolves the empirical anomalies facing conventional interpretations of the disadvantage/crime relationship. This book offers compelling evidence which will stimulate debate in this area of criminology and will also interest academics, policy makers and practitioners in the field.

Settler societies habitually frame Indigenous people as ‘a people of the past’—their culture somehow ‘frozen’ in time, their identities tied to static notions of ‘authenticity’, and their communities understood as ‘in decline’. But this narrative erases the many ways that Indigenous people are actively engaged in future-orientated practice, including through new technologies. Indigenous Digital Life offers a broad, wide-ranging account of how social media has become embedded in the lives of Indigenous Australians. Centring on ten core themes—including identity, community, hate, desire and death—we seek to understand both the practice and broader politics of being Indigenous on social media. Rather than reproducing settler narratives of Indigenous ‘deficiency’, we approach Indigenous social media as a space of Indigenous action, production, and creativity; we see Indigenous social media users as powerful agents, who interact with and shape their immediate worlds with skill, flair and nous; and instead of being ‘a people of the past’, we show that Indigenous digital life is often future-orientated, working towards building better relations, communities and worlds. This book offers new ideas, insights and provocations for both students and scholars of Indigenous studies, media and communication studies, and cultural studies.

For eighteen years, a gap in Mark's memory has concealed the facts - that he was driving when Paula died and a corrupt police investiation sent an innocent man to prison. Someone wants the past to remain buried and anyone probing into it to be stopped - permanently. Mark and Jenn's discovery will shock the whole town, but only if they live long enough to reveal it.
