Engineering in a Social and Environmental Context : Proceedings of the 17th Conference of the British Dam Society at the University of Leeds from 12-15 September 2012
This book contains the proceedings of the 17th Biennial Conference of the British Dam Society, Dams: Engineering in a Social and Environmental Context, held at the University of Leeds in September 2012. The 45 papers are grouped into seven sections, although many papers cover more than one section topic area. They share the experiences of many professionals involved in managing and designing work on dams and reservoirs, not only in the UK but in countries around the world.
Addresses the concerns of the dam engineering community, and summarizes experiences in safety analysis and the works on both embankment and concrete dams. This book provides an analysis on the subjects in the field of reservoir engineering, and is designed for those involved in reservoir design and construction, both in the UK and overseas.
This volume presents the proceedings of Dams 2000, the 11th conference of the British Dam Society, and brings together a valuable collection of 38 papers covering a wide variety of topics related to reservoir safety and the rehabilitation of existing dams. Many of the papers are case histories describing investigations and rehabilitation of existing dams to extend asset life.

This book contains the proceedings of the 17th Biennial Conference of the British Dam Society, Dams: Engineering in a Social and Environmental Context. It covers practical aspects which are directly relevant to all who work in the design, construction or management of dams and reservoirs, both in the UK and abroad. Several papers cover the construction of new dams, while many address the issues that arise from the nation's ageing portfolio of existing dams, where spillway improvements or other works may be needed to comply with current standards or to provide operational improvements. The environmental impacts of all such works must be fully considered, and examples are given where habitat and amenity provision have been integral components of projects. The UK legislative and policy framework is covered, with comparisons to design standards from abroad. Other papers examine aspects of the risks that dams pose to the public, and how to analyse and minimise such risks.
A collection of papers on a range of subjects' in the field of dam engineering, including embankment dams, concrete dams service reservoirs, investigations and reservoir safety standards. The operation of the Reservoirs Act 1975 from an owner's and a Supervising Engineer's view is also discussed.

Proceedings of the 13th Conference of the British Dam Society and the ICOLD European Club Meeting Held at the University of Kent, Canterbury, UK from 22 to 26 June 2004
Presents proceedings the 13th Conference of the British Dam Society held at the University of Kent, June 2004. These papers include discussion on the benefits that reservoirs can provide in terms of water supply and recreation, the environmental impact they can have, and the use of geomembranes to provide water tightness.
Contains the proceedings of the 15th Conference of the British Dam Society, Ensuring reservoir safety into the future, covering a variety of issues relating to reservoir safety, particularly in the UK. This book presents information on the effect that the significant storm events in the summer of 2007 could have on UK reservoir safety.
This book contains the proceedings of the tenth biennial conference of the British Dam Society, held at the University of Wales in Bangor in 1998. Included are papers charting key issues on the future of dam engineering into the next century by eminent figures in the field of water engineering.

Presenting a survey of embankment dams, this book provides information from many countries on research, environmental considerations, risks, hazards, and safety. It is useful for engineers involved in the planning, design, construction, or operation of water-retaining embankments, and tailing dams.
- Developments in reservoir hydrology - Innovation in hydraulic structures - Risk and reservoir safety - Environmental implications: benefit and disbenefits - Lessons learned from overseas experience - Investigations and remedial works to extend asset life
Hydrological and hydraulic issues covered include: - a study into the effect of changes in weir crest coefficient with head - computer modelling of the operational systems of reservoirs - developments in dam break modelling Various projects and case studies from Portugal, India, Kazakhstan, Georgia and Egypt are included. Grouting works at two reservoirs are described and there is a paper on the desiccation assessment of the puddle clay cores at several reservoirs. The book also describes and illustrates other works on the refurbishment and rehabilitation of dams.
This volume explores the current issues and recent international developments in reservoir planning and operation, design and construction, monitoring and maintenance. In the light of the recent climatic changes which have seen a reduction in rainfall and resulted in water shortages, a number of pertinent subjects are examined in detail, for example the provision of new resources, evaluation of optimal operating policies, review of water supply options, sedimentation effects, the environmental aspects and the economic viability of reservoirs.

Included are papers charting key issues on the future of dam engineering into the next century by eminent figures in the field of water engineering. Issues that are tackled include the use of risk analysis in the safety management and maintenance of dams, flood control and the management, performance and rehabilitation of ageing dams.
This book contains the proceedings of the 16th Biennial Conference of the British Dam Society, Managing dams: Challenges in a time of change, covering a wide range of topics of direct relevance to all who are involved in the engineering and management of dams and reservoirs. A major challenge in the UK is to ensure that the nation's stock of existing dams is properly managed to ensure both their safety and continued functionality. Recent improvements in the knowledge of factors influential in dam failure are presented, along with papers on remedial work for existing dams and how risk can be assessed and managed. There are several papers on the upgrade of spillways that were needed following risk analyses. New dams for water supply or hydroelectricity overseas and for flood alleviation purposes in the UK are also considered, with a range of dam types and sizes discussed.

This volume is the Proceedings from the 12th International Conference organised by the British Dam Society in September 2002.Reservoir safety is the key theme with many papers on the performance and rehabilitation of dams. The evolution of reservoirs in Ireland and the development of safety legislation in the UK are described. Risk assessment features in a number of papers as a method of assessing the safety of reservoirs. Several papers address the seismic assessment of dams and structures.
