EDUCATING PHYSICIANS The current blueprint for medical education in North America was drawn up in 1910 by Abraham Flexner in his report Medical Education in the United States and Canada. The basic features outlined by Flexner remain in place today. Yet with the past century's enormous societal changes, the practice of medicine and its scientific, pharmacological, and technological foundations have been transformed. Now medical education in the United States is at a crossroads: those who teach medical students and residents must choose whether to continue in the direction established over a hundred years ago or to take a fundamentally different course, guided by contemporary innovation and new understandings about how people learn. Emerging from an extensive study of physician education by The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, Educating Physicians calls for a major overhaul of the present approach to preparing doctors for their careers. The text addresses major issues for the future of the field and takes a comprehensive look at the most pressing concerns in physician education today. The key findings of the study recommend four goals for medical education: standardization of learning outcomes and individualization of the learning process; integration of formal knowledge and clinical experience; development of habits of inquiry and innovation; and focus on professional identity formation. Like The Carnegie Foundation's revolutionizing Flexner Report of 1910, Educating Physicians is destined to change the way administrators and faculty in medical schools and programs prepare their physicians for the future.

Federal Taxes on Gratuitous Transfers: Law and Planning, Second Edition is a sophisticated Estate & Gift Tax casebook with plenty of problems, nuance, and policy discussion. The purchase of this ebook edition does not entitle you to receive access to the Connected eBook on CasebookConnect. You will need to purchase a new print book to get access to the full experience including: lifetime access to the online ebook with highlight, annotation, and search capabilities, plus an outline tool and other helpful resources. This book deals primarily with the federal wealth transfer taxes, and with the federal income tax as it bears on gratuitous transfers. The federal wealth transfer taxes presently consist of a partially unified estate and gift tax and a generation-skipping tax. The federal transfer tax system is separate and apart from the federal income tax. The book includes relevant case law and references to statutes and regulations and has many explanations and problems to help students new to the field to find a way through this complicated material. The book is appropriate for both J.D. and LL.M. courses in Estate and Gift Tax. New to the 2nd Edition: All material up to date with current law and current exemption amounts (as of 2023) All new chapter on estate and gift tax issues for individuals who are noncitizens or nonresidents Income taxation of trusts and estates material moved to stand-alone chapter Raises issues of race, gender, sexual orientation, and other identity taxes, making it easier for students to connect doctrine and policy Discussion of policy debate around long-term and perpetual trusts Lists, illustrations and photographs provide engaging visual commentary Sidebars on relevant persons, places, and things provide interesting content, surprising those who think that tax is a dry and boring subject Professors and students will benefit from: Emphasis on text, statutes, and regulations, rather than cases. “Building block” organization (simple to complex estates), rather than segmented organization according to Code sections. Extensive use of questions and problems to aid students. High-profile authorship: Joseph M. Dodge and Wendy C. Gerzog are distinguished emeriti faculty. Bridget J. Crawford, Jennifer Bird-Pollan, and Victoria J. Haneman are all well-established in the field and are attuned to the needs of today’s students. Reconstitutes the Estate and Gift tax course from the ground up in light of modern estates practice. More emphasis on valuation and use of FLPs than in other books; valuation is introduced early on and integrated with other material. Relation of tax doctrine to tax planning strategies. Focus on doctrine that influences the practice of estate and trust law, rather than doctrine for its own sake. Reference to state law (including recent developments) as it bears on transfer tax issues, with full coverage of issues raised by community property systems
The first serious academic study of obituaries, this book focuses on how societies remember. Bridget Fowler makes great use of the theories of Pierre Bordieu, arguing that obituaries are one important component in society's collective memory. This book, the first of its kind, will find a place on every serious sociology scholar's bookshelves.
For teachers in higher education who haven’t been able to catch up with developments in teaching and learning, James Davis and Bridget Arend offer an introduction that focuses on seven coherent and proven evidence-based strategies. The underlying rationale is to provide a framework to match teaching goals to distinct ways of learning, based on well-established theories of learning. The authors present approaches that readers can readily and safely experiment with to achieve desired learning outcomes, and build confidence in changing their methods of teaching.Research on learning clearly demonstrates that learning is not one thing, but many. The learning associated with developing a skill is different from the learning associated with understanding and remembering information, which in turn is different from thinking critically and creatively, solving problems, making decisions, or change paradigms in the light of evidence. Differing outcomes involve different ways of learning and teaching strategies. The authors provide the reader with a conceptual approach for selecting appropriate teaching strategies for different types of content, and for achieving specific learning objectives. They demonstrate through examples how a focused and purposeful selection of activities improves student performance, and in the process makes for a more effective and satisfying teaching experience. The core of the book presents a chapter on each of the seven ways of learning. Each chapter offers a full description of the process, illustrates its application with examples from different academic fields and types of institutions, clearly describes the teacher’s facilitation role, and covers assessment and online use.The seven ways of learning are: Behavioral Learning; Cognitive Learning; Learning through Inquiry; Learning with Mental Models; Learning through Groups and Teams; Learning through Virtual Realities; and Experiential Learning.Along the way, the authors provide the reader with a basis for evaluating other approaches to teaching and other learning methodologies so that she or he can confidently go beyond the “seven ways” to adapt or adopt further strategies. This is the ideal companion for teachers who are beginning to explore new ways of teaching, and want to do some serious independent thinking about learning. The book can also be used to prepare graduate students for teaching, and will be welcomed by centers for teaching and learning to help continuing faculty re-examine a particular aspect of their teaching.
Using archival material and many unpublished sources, this work traces the origins of Oxford and Cambridge University colleges as places of learning, founded from the thirteenth century, for unmarried men who were required to take vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, the majority of whom trained for the priesthood. The process reveals how the isolated monk-like existence was gradually transformed from the idea of married Fellows at University Colleges being considered absurd into considering it absurd not to allow Fellows to marry and keep their fellowships and therefore their income. This book shows how the Church was accepted as an essential element in society with university trained Churchmen becoming influential in Crown, government, and State. As part of the cataclysmic change from Catholic to Protestant religion, Edward VI and his Council permitted priests to marry, partly to declare their allegiance to the new Protestant religion and their rejection of the old. However, within the university colleges the rule that Fellows would lose their fellowships immediately on marriage was insisted upon. Why a group of individuals were instructed to remain set in a medieval monastic way of life within a nineteenth-century institution is traced in conjunction with how anomalies arose, were absorbed, accepted or challenged by a few courageous individuals prior to bringing about the ultimate change to the statutes in 1882.

Research on home visiting shows that Early Head Start (EHS) home-based programs benefit from additional training and resources that streamline philosophy and content. In this essential guide, Walsh and Mortensen propose that alignment with Family Life Education’s (FLE) strengths-based methodology results in greater consistency through a model of prevention, education, and collaboration with families. This text is the first to outline linkages between FLE and EHS home visiting. It explores a qualitative study of FLE integrated in a current EHS home-based program and application of FLE methodology to home visiting topics. This approach will influence professional practice and provide a foundation for developing evidence-based home visiting practices. Online content accompanies the text, with videos demonstrating the FLE approach in action and discussion questions to encourage engagement with and understanding of the core material. Transforming Early Head Start Home Visiting: A Family Life Education Approach is essential reading for upper-level undergraduate and masters students in family studies and early childhood education, as well as practitioners working with children and families.
...a remarkable account of the Packer family...painstakingly researched...will enthral anyone with an interest in the media'. - Kate de Brito, The Daily Telegraph Australia's richest man, Kerry Packer, came to the helm of Australian Consolidated Press a quarter of a century ago; in recent years his son, James, has begun taking over the reins of the group. But despite the legendary reputation of Kerry Packer and his father Sir Frank, and the popular fascination with young James, the story of the creation of the family dynasty has never been told. This compelling book unravels, for the first time, Frank Packer's Machiavellian deals that resulted in the launch of the Australian Women's Weekly in 1933. From there it charts the production of the Daily and Sunday Telegraphs, the Nine network, the Bulletin and Cleo. The House of Packer moves seamlessly from the bohemia of the newsroom to the intrigue of the boardroom; from the rumbustious style of celebrated editors to the feudalism of Sir Frank; from the bitter condemnation of political enemies to at times bizarre territorial disputes with the Fairfax and Murdoch dynasties.
