For a long time now, there has been a great debate in Christendom as to what is required of a person by God to obtain salvation from him. Is it totally of grace, as some people say, or does it require works as well? Since the Bible seems to talk about both works and grace concerning salvation and since, according to Romans 11, that works and grace are the opposite of each other, it would appear that the Bible is contradicting itself. However, once you come to understand that there is a one true way to interpret the Holy Scriptures, which is one who lives in today's world has never seen before, then it opens up a whole new understanding as to what the Bible has to say concerning salvation, and that there is no contradiction. And once you know what God truly requires of his people, you can then live your life by this greater, more accurate knowledge to have the salvation of everlasting life given to you someday.

While the role of the laity in the nationalist awakening is commonly recognized, their part in the movement for religious renewal is usually minimized. Initiative on the part of the laity has been thought to have existed only outside the church, where it remained a troubling and at times insurgent force. Clarke revises this picture of the role of the laity in church and community. He examines the rich associational life of the laity, which ranged from nationalist and fraternal associations independent of the church to devotional and philanthropic associations affiliated with the church. Associations both inside and outside the church fostered ethnic consciousness in different but complementary ways that resulted in a cultural consensus based on denominational loyalty. Through these associations, lay men and women developed an institutional base for the activism and initiative that shaped both their church and their community. Clarke demonstrates that lay activists played a pivotal role in transforming the religious life of the community.

A definitive history of the fatal clash between Vietnam War protestors and the National Guard, illuminating its causes and lasting consequences. On May 4, 1970, at Kent State University in Ohio, political fires that had been burning across America during the 1960s exploded. Antiwar protesters wearing bell-bottom jeans and long hair hurled taunts and rocks at another group of young Americans—National Guardsmen sporting gas masks and rifles. At half past noon, violence unfolded with chaotic speed, as guardsmen—many of whom had joined the Guard to escape the draft—opened fire on the students. Two reductive narratives ensued: one, that lethal state violence targeted Americans who spoke their minds; the other, that law enforcement gave troublemakers the comeuppance they deserved. For over fifty years, little middle ground has been found due to incomplete and sometimes contradictory evidence. Kent State meticulously re-creates the divided cultural landscape of America during the Vietnam War and heightened popular anxieties around the country. On college campuses, teach-ins, sit-down strikes, and demonstrations exposed the growing rift between the left and the right. Many students opposed the war as unnecessary and unjust and were uneasy over poor and working-class kids drafted and sent to Vietnam in their place. Some developed a hatred for the military, the police, and everything associated with authority, while others resolved to uphold law and order at any cost. Focusing on the thirteen victims of the Kent State shooting and a painstaking reconstruction of the days surrounding it, historian Brian VanDeMark draws on crucial new research and interviews—including, for the first time, the perspective of guardsmen who were there. The result is a complete reckoning with the tragedy that marked the end of the sixties.

Michael James is a gay man living in denial. He believes he has found the perfect expression of spirituality while taking care of the practical demands of everyday existence. However, his life as a Catholic priest in the twenty-first century fails to nourish his personal need for love and the free expression of that love. Michael's story is one of lost opportunity, spiritual emptiness, but ultimate discovery. The story begins with Michael as a university student. He is active in the university's Chaplaincy Center and has a personal connection to the chaplain, Father Mathew Brown. Under Father Brown's influence, Michael decides to enroll in the seminary. Six years later, Michael has his own parish in a university town similar to the one in which he was an undergraduate. His bishop forces him into an active role in the local university chaplaincy group, with the idea of promoting the Catholic Church, something Michael finds distasteful in an organization that welcomes all students. From this point until his final act of defiance, Michael's life as a Catholic priest deforms his spirit, leaving him empty and unloved.

On Easter Monday, between 1,000 and 1,500 Irish Volunteers and members of the Irish Citizen Army seized the General Post Office and other key locations in Dublin. The intention of their leaders, including Patrick Pearse and James Connolly, was to end British rule in Ireland and establish an independent thirty-two county Irish republic. The book brings the reader closer to the events of 1916 than has previously been possible and provides an exceptional account of a city at war.
The idea that the person doing the talking is the person doing the learning seems counter-intuitive. Yet, that is exactly the case. When students put their thoughts into words, they internalize the learning. As they dialogue with peers, articulate their ideas, and express themselves, their oral language skills translate directly into written language skills. Explore six strategies that address the challenges of the achievement gap: 1) Set High Expectations: Get Kids Emotionally Involved 2) Challenges Students to Think: Teach Higher Order Thinking 3) Require Rigor: Require Complete Sentences, Standard English, Formal Register 4) Leave Nothing to Chance: Revisit! Review! Re-teach! Revise! 5) Make No Excuses: Encourage At-Risk Participation 6) Insist on Results: Emphasize Reading
