Accurate radiation dosimetry is a requirement of radiation oncology, diagnostic radiology and nuclear medicine. It is necessary so as to satisfy the needs of patient safety, therapeutic and diagnostic optimisation, and retrospective epidemiological studies of the biological effects resulting from low absorbed doses of ionising radiation. The radiation absorbed dose received by the patient is the ultimate consequence of the transfer of kinetic energy through collisions between energetic charged particles and atoms of the tissue being traversed. Thus, the ability of the medical physicist to both measure and calculate accurately patient dosimetry demands a deep understanding of the physics of charged particle interactions with matter. Interestingly, the physics of charged particle energy loss has an almost exclusively theoretical basis, thus necessitating an advanced theoretical understanding of the subject in order to apply it appropriately to the clinical regime. Each year, about one-third of the world's population is exposed to ionising radiation as a consequence of diagnostic or therapeutic medical practice. The optimisation of the resulting radiation absorbed dose received by the patient and the clinical outcome sought, whether diagnostic or therapeutic, demands accuracy in the evaluation of the radiation absorbed doses resulting from such exposures. This requirement arrises primarily from two broadly-encompassing factors: The requirement in radiation oncology for a 5% or less uncertainty in the calculation and measurement of absorbed dose so as to optimise the therapeutic ratio of the probabilities of tumour control and normal tissue complications; and The establishment and further refinement of dose reference levels used in diagnostic radiology and nuclear medicine to minimise the amount of absorbed dose for a required degree of diagnostic benefit. The radiation absorbed dose is the outcome of energetic charged particles decelerating and transferring their kinetic energy to tissue. The calculation of this energy deposition, characterised by the stopping power, is unique in that it is derived entirely from theoretical principles. This dominant role of the associated theory makes its understanding of fundamental to the calculation of the radiation absorbed dose to the patient. The theoretical development of charged particle energy loss recognised in medical physics textbooks is in general limited to basic derivations based upon classical theory, generally a simplified form of the Bohr theory. More advanced descriptions of, for example, the Bethe-Bloch quantum result usually do not go beyond the simple presentation of the result without full explanation of the theoretical development of the theory and consideration of its limitations, its dependencies upon the Born perturbation theory and the various correction factors needed to correct for the failures of that Born theory at higher orders. This is not appropriate for a full understanding of the theory that its importance deserves. The medical radiation physicist should be aware of the details of the theoretical derivations of charged particle energy loss in order to appreciate the levels of accuracy in tabular data provided in reports and the calculation methodologies used in modern Monte Carlo calculations of radiation dosimetry.

To the average cricket follower of his time R.W.V. Robins (1906-1968) seemed to be a typical ‘big noise’ at Lord’s. But the detail of his life is far more interesting than that. Born the son of a Post Office clerk in working-class Stafford, his family moved to London when he was fourteen. Walter’s mother talked Highgate School into taking him on as a pupil, where he starred in the school’s cricket and football teams. His cricket reputation, underpinned by energy and commitment, got him into Middlesex sides in the summer he left school. His sporting reputation followed him to Cambridge where he was helped by a scholarship seemingly contrived out of thin air. He rewarded his supporters with sporting rather than academic achievements, and then joined the ranks of Sir Julien Cahn’s cricket-playing employees, fitting in football for the Corinthians and the odd appearance in the League. Marriage yielded a job in insurance underwriting, and allowed him to play regular county cricket. His enthusiastic batting, dynamic fielding, and sharply spun leg-breaks brought him representative-match opportunities and eventually Test games. Committee places followed, and his combative but cheerful manner found him friends, including a regular correspondence with Don Bradman, and exasperated enemies, including Enid Blyton. He led Middlesex in the Brylcreem summer of 1947. Brian Rendell here reports on a man who wanted cricket to be as exciting as football.

Why was it such an important city for minor league baseball? This book traces Milwaukee's baseball history from the game's first appearance in the city in 1859 to the Brewers' last American Association season in 1952. It covers Rufus King, the man responsible for bringing baseball to Milwaukee, and his efforts at getting the game off to a successful start in the city, Milwaukee's status as the largest minor league market in the Northwestern League and Western Association, legendary manager Connie Mack, southpaw Rube Waddell, Hall of Fame player Hugh Duffy, who managed the team to its only Western League pennant in 1903, widowed owner Agnes Malloy Havenor, who chose veteran third baseman Harry Clark to lead the Brewers to their first two AA pennants in 1913 and 1914, colorful owner Otto Borchert, the Brewers' pennant-winning 1936 season under manager Al Sothoron, the "golden era" of minor league baseball in the city, highlighted by owner Bill Veeck's sideshows and colorful managers Casey Stengel, "Jolly Cholly" Grimm, and Nick "Tomato Face" Cullop, and the last years of minor league baseball in 1952 before the arrival of the Braves.

In this updated and expanded second edition, new literature has been added on contaminant fate in the soil-subsurface environment. In particular, more data on the behavior of inorganic contaminants and on engineered nanomaterials were included, the latter comprising a group of “emerging contaminants” that may reach the soil and subsurface zones. New chapters are devoted to a new perspective of contaminant geochemistry, namely irreversible changes in pristine land and subsurface systems following chemical contamination. Two chapters were added on this topic, focusing attention on the impact of chemical contaminants on the matrix and properties of both liquid and solid phases of soil and subsurface domains. Contaminant impacts on irreversible changes occurring in groundwater are discussed and their irreversible changes on the porous medium solid phase are surveyed. In contrast to the geological time scale controlling natural changes of porous media liquid and solid phases, the time scale associated with chemical pollutant induced changes is far shorter and extends over a “human lifetime scale”.

The theoretical development is physically based and is closely tied to the nature of the seismograms observed across a wide range of distance scales - from a few kilometres as in shallow reflection work for geophysical prospecting, to many thousands of kilometres for major earthquakes. A unified framework is presented for all classes of seismic phenomena, for both body waves and surface waves. Since its first publication in 1983 this book has been an important resource for understanding the way in which seismic waves can be understood in terms of reflection and transmission properties of Earth models, and how complete theoretical seismograms can be calculated. The methods allow the development of specific approximations that allow concentration on different seismic arrivals and hence provide a direct tie to seismic observations.

Victor, a computer specialist and a Captain in the SAS while returning from leave to Perth is struck by a hit and run driver and left by them in the road to die. After he recovers from a long coma, he is discharged from the service as unfit; he then vows his revenge on these that left him there alone. While recovering he hears on the news of a young girl brutally assaulted and murdered, when the police fail to catch the perpetrator Victor plans to avenge the girl. His plans for revenge goes well until the expertise he learned in the SAS brings him to the attention of the wily Chief Inspector Krogger, the head of a crime unit investigating a string of murders in Melbourne. The Commander, the head of ASIO hears of Victor’s special skills and is keen to have Victor working for them, so he devises a cunning plan to free Victor of police suspicion. Eventually Victor’s arrival at ASIO is just in time to prevent a well planned terrorist attack on football match at the MCG. ASIO is badly hurt when a mole steals some vital files from their impregnable computer system. Victor’s special talents are again called for. He manages to recover the files but not before he is again critically injured and left in a coma. His last conscious thought is ‘My fault, all my fault’.
