This grab bag of tales from Bret Harte includes appearances from several of his most famous recurring characters, including kindhearted gambler Jack Hamlin, conniving state politician Judge Beeswinger, and bloviating but chivalrous attorney Colonel Culpepper Starbottle.
Hungering for home and safety, the boy's stumbling feet carry him into Deadman's Gulch -- just one more disastrous move after all the rest! Young Clarence and his friend Susie find for themselves a rough trail to follow -- separated from their California-bound wagon train and lost on the Great Plains . . . and strangely befriended by one of the most feared roughhouse outlaws of the Plains, the notorious Flynn! Misadventure and violence mix in Bret Harte's classic novel of the Westward Trail.
Francis Bret Harte (1836-1902) was a prolific American author and poet, best remembered for his accounts of pioneering life in California. The spirit of Dickens breathes through the poems and stories of Bret Harte just as the spirit of Bret Harte breathes through the poems and stories of Kipling.
The building which was assigned to him had been originally a church. It still bore a faded odor of sanctity, mingled, however, with a later and slightly alcoholic breath of political discussion, the result of its weekly occupation of the Board as a Tribune for the enunciation of party principles and devotion to the Liberties of the People.
Bret Harte's original fame rested upon his classic California Gold Rush tale, "The Luck of Roaring Camp." Four years after Harte's death, his former associate Mark Twain mocked his writing in his autobiography, saying that Harte was insincere, and that the dialect of "Roaring Camp" was never heard outside of that story. Yet at one point in time, Bret Harte was the highest-paid writer in America. "A Phyllis of the Sierras" was first published in 1888, and it is one of Harte's later writings. After failures in America, Harte traveled in Europe and eventually settled in London, where his work found more favor than it had in America. "A Phyllis of the Sierras" could be thought to be a "rustic" Western version of Henry James's transatlantic romances. Young British heir Frank Mainwaring encounters the Bradleys, a deceptively easygoing, yet charming California couple who've settled in the Sierras. Frank falls for Mrs. Bradley's attractive cousin Louise Macy; but his frail health and British manners cause all manner of confusion. By the end, a reversal of fortune proves a true love match for Frank, and the native nobility of the Californians shines through.
Bret Harte was at the forefront of western American literature, paving the way for other writers, including Mark Twain. For the first time in one volume, The Luck of Roaring Camp and Other Writings brings together not only Harte's best-known pieces including "The Luck of Roaring Camp" and "The Outcasts of Poker Flat," but also the original transcription of the famous 1882 essay "The Argonauts of '49" as well as a selection of his poetry, lesser-known essays, and three of his Condensed Novels -parodies of James Fenimore Cooper, Charles Dickens, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. America has always had a fascination with the Wild West, and schoolchildren grow up learning about famous Westerners like Wyatt Earp, Buffalo Bill, Wild Bill Hicock, as well as the infamous shootout at O.K. Corral. Pioneering and cowboys and Indians have been just as popular in Hollywood, with Westerners helping turn John Wayne and Clint Eastwood into legends on the silver screen. HBO's Deadwood, about the historical 19th century mining town on the frontier was popular last decade. Not surprisingly, a lot has been written about the West, and one of the best known writers about the West in the 19th century was Francis Bret Harte (1836-1902), who wrote poetry and short stories during his literary career. Harte was on the West Coast by the 1860s, placing himself in perfect position to document and depict frontier life.
