This book highlights the importance of Ludwig Wittgenstein’s writings on psychology and psychological phenomena for the historical development of contemporary psychology. It presents an insightful assessment of the philosopher’s work, particularly his later writings, which draws on key interpretations that have informed our understanding of metapsychological and psychological issues. Wittgenstein’s Philosophy in Psychology engages with both critics and followers of the philosopher’s work to demonstrate its enduring relevance to psychology today. Sullivan presents a novel examination of Wittgenstein’s later writings by providing historical detail about the uptake, understanding and use of Wittgenstein’s remarks and method in psychology and related areas of social science, examining persistent sources of conceptual confusion and showing how to apply his insights in investigations of collectives, social life, emotions, subjectivity, and development. In doing so, he reveals the value for psychologists in adopting a philosophical method of conceptual investigation to work through and become more reflexive about prominent theories, methods, therapies and practices in their respective, multiple fields and thereby create a resource for future theoretical, empirical and applied psychologists. This work will be of particular relevance to students and academics engaged in the history of psychology and to practitioners interested in understanding the continued importance of Wittgenstein’s work within the practices of psychology.
In 2011, former Canadian national champion motocross racer Brent (Airmail) Worrall, who had recently returned to the sport after a lengthy absence due to struggles with alcohol, gambling, and depression, was again in a fight to save his own life. His shot at redemption and making peace with the sport he loves was cut short by a near-fatal crash. A mechanical malfunction in mid-flight over the track’s largest jump sent him spiralling into a nose dive. He had just enough time while airborne to say, “Survive, survive, survive.” He broke his back and neck in six places, fractured his clavicle, sternum, and multiple ribs and collapsed his lungs. After flat-lining on the operating table four times, Brent’s doctors finally managed to stabilize him. He required two blood transfusions, and his doctors feared the worst. He emerged from hospital a paraplegic, given only five to ten years to live due to various complications from his accident. After losing the sport he loved many years before to the seedy underworld of depression, alcoholism, drugs, and compulsive gambling, he vowed never to let go of his lifeline passion again. Brent meticulously takes us through his troubled journey to the eventual promised land where he now sits. Along the way, he recounts his many inspirational interactions with those who helped mould his character, including Rick Hansen on his Man in Motion tour as well as looking into Terry Fox’s eyes on his Marathon of Hope. In keeping with his character as an avid sports and history enthusiast, Brent takes us back through many pertinent historical events that shaped his life and society as a whole. Two years after his accident, Brent was back at the track, this time to announce races rather than participate in them. Shortly after that, he launched the Canadian Moto Show, a live online talk-radio show, as well as a magazine, with his good friend Kevin Lefebvre. Throughout the process of giving back to the motocross community while also reinventing himself, he maintained a position as a senior writer at Motocross Performance Magazine. In 2016, he was nominated for a Coast Mental Health Courage to Come Back award. He continues to reshape his life within the sport he loves, refusing to let any of the formidable obstacles he has faced slow him down. This book is Brent’s firsthand account of his journey, written in all five senses, with the hope that his story will motivate and inspire others to see that any seemingly insurmountable obstacles can be overcome.

From the formation of the first institutions of representative government and the use of slavery in the seventeenth century through the American Revolution, the Civil War, the civil rights movement, and into the twenty-first century, Virginia’s history has been marked by obstacles to democratic change. In The Grandees of Government, Brent Tarter offers an extended commentary based in primary sources on how these undemocratic institutions and ideas arose, and how they were both perpetuated and challenged. Although much literature on American republicanism focuses on the writings of Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, among others, Tarter reveals how their writings were in reality an expression of federalism, not of republican government. Within Virginia, Jefferson, Madison, and others such as John Taylor of Caroline and their contemporaries governed in ways that directly contradicted their statements about representative—and limited— government. Even the democratic rhetoric of the American Revolution worked surprisingly little immediate change in the political practices, institutions, and culture of Virginia. The counterrevolution of the 1880s culminated in the Constitution of 1902 that disfranchised the remainder of African Americans. Virginians who could vote reversed the democratic reforms embodied in the constitutions of 1851, 1864, and 1869, so that the antidemocratic Byrd organization could dominate Virginia’s public life for the first two-thirds of the twentieth century. Offering a thorough reevaluation of the interrelationship between the words and actions of Virginia’s political leaders, The Grandees of Government provides an entirely new interpretation of Virginia’s political history.
Constructing a functional system of magic that helps readers suspend disbelief is a crucial part of worldbuilding in the fantasy genres. Yet creating a believable, compelling and original fictional universe can be daunting. To help inspire writers, this guide provides an overview of how magic has been understood in history and used in myth, legend and modern fiction. Different forms of magic are explored and a broad range of stories--from Nordic myths to modern novels--are described and referenced. Discussion explores how magic as a concept shapes, and is shaped by, fictional worlds and societies.

The terms forensic investigator and forensic investigation are part of our cultural identity. They can be found in the news, on television, and in film. They are invoked, generally, to imply that highly trained personnel will be collecting some form of physical evidence with eventual scientific results that cannot be questioned or bargained with. In other words, they are invoked to imply the reliability, certainty, and authority of a scientific inquiry. Using cases from the authors' extensive files, Forensic Investigations: An Introduction provides an overview of major subjects related to forensic inquiry and evidence examination. It will prepare Criminal Justice and Criminology students in forensic programs for more specialized courses and provide a valuable resource to newly employed forensic practitioners. Written by practicing and testifying forensic professionals from law enforcement, academia, mental health and the forensic sciences, this work offers a balanced scientific approach, based on the established literature, for broad appeal. The purpose of this book is to help students and professionals rid themselves of the myths and misconceptions they have accumulated regarding forensic investigators and the subsequent forensic investigations they help to conduct. It will help the reader understand the role of the forensic investigator; the nature and variety of forensic investigations that take place in the justice system; and the mechanisms by which such investigations become worthy as evidence in court. Its goals are no loftier than that. However, they could not be more necessary to our understanding of what justice is, how it is most reliably achieved, and how it can be corrupted by those who are burdened with apathy and alternative motives. - A primary text for instructors teaching forensic courses related to criminal and forensic investigation - Written by forensic professionals, currently in practice and testifying in court - Offers applied protocols for a broad range of forensic investigations - Augments theoretical constructs with recent, and relevant case studies and forensic reports - Based on the most recent scientific research, practice, and protocols related to forensic inquiry

A Rift in the Clouds chronicles the efforts of three white southern federal judges to protect the civil rights of African Americans at the beginning of the twentieth century, when few in the American legal community were willing to do so. Jacob Treiber of Arkansas, Emory Speer of Georgia, and Thomas Goode Jones of Alabama challenged the Supreme Court's reading of the Reconstruction amendments that were passed in an attempt to make disfranchised and exploited African Americans equal citizens of the United States. These unpopular white southerners, two of whom who had served in the Confederate Army and had themselves helped to bring Reconstruction to an end in their states, asserted that the amendments not only established black equality, but authorized the government to protect blacks. Although their rulings won few immediate gains for blacks and were overturned by the Supreme Court, their legal arguments would be resurrected, and meet with greater success, over half a century later during the civil rights movement.

The year 1924 was a game changer! For the first time, the profession as a whole had a way of gauging the nervous system via the NCM (neurocalometer.) This scientific leap revealed if aberrant spinal temperatures were present and, more importantly, when they were not.Today, we now understand that a temperature asymmetry as detected by thermography reflects function of the sympathetic nervous system. When the chiropractor implements thermography, not only are they able to obtain important neurological data but also equips the entire chiropractic profession with an objective analysis of when to adjust and when not to adjust. The philosophical and artistic constructs can be debated based on one's personal understanding. However, science (when applied objectively) cannot be argued. With what we currently know and understand about the nervous system, when a spinal compromise is present, the nervous system will always be affected. Thermography and its application thereof provide the chiropractor an objective neurological gauge. Moreover, it provides a unique way to not only keep the profession separate and distinct but to also unite the profession as a whole.
Thomas Goode Jones of Alabama is the first comprehensive biography of a key Alabama politician and federal jurist whose life and times embody the conflicts and transformations in the Deep South between the Civil War and World War I.
