TWAS NOT THE SEASON TO BE JOLLY Christmas had always been a special time for Holly Paxton. Not only was it her birthday, but it was the day she had married Hunt, Marquess of Vandover. This year should have been even more special—the first Christmas of her married life—except that Hunt was in jail, and it was all Holly's fault. She'd wanted to help him advance his diplomatic career, but her attempts at espionage had gone terribly wrong. Now her husband was accused of treason, and Holly knew that if she couldn't save Hunt—and their marriage—she had only herself to blame.
This book reclaims Korean history in Hawaii through the examination of works by three local writers of Korean descent: Margaret Pai, Ty Pak, and Gary Pak.
Within everyones personal story is the presence of the Divine making Itself known. In The Faceless Goddess: Dreams, Fantasies, and Visions of a Feminine Nature, the author tells the story of her own life experiences, which is really a personal journey in search for the Divine in her own life. As a child and an adolescent, the author is not aware that the journey is taking place. As an adult though, she begins to realize that something extraordinary is taking place when she begins to ask questions such as Who am I? and What purpose and meaning does life hold for me? Over time, and with much introspection through dreams, fantasies, and visions, as well as with her work with the archetypes, the author begins to realize that her search for the Divine is really a search for her True Self. She also discovers that by finding her True Self, she will also find the purpose and meaning to the life she is living. Eventually, she comes to the conclusion that life itself is an expression of the Divine in the living world. And that humans experiences are a living testimony that the Sacred and the Divine are ever present in the world around them and within their very being.
Winner of the 2011 Virginia A. Hodgkinson Book Prize presented by the Association for Research on Nonprofit Organizations and Voluntary Action (ARNOVA) The spectacular recent success of state-funded preschool education is revealed and explained in this absorbing study. A quiet revolution has been underway in American education policy since 1995, with forty-one states and the District of Columbia creating some form of state-funded preschool learning. Brenda K. Bushouse tells why it became politically advantageous for state legislators to support universal access to preschool programs and how political and budgetary stability was achieved to spur this initiative. In 2001, the Pew Charitable Trusts announced an ambitious new giving program aimed at creating universal preschool for all three- and four-year-olds. Bushouse reveals Pew's unorthodox giving program and complex strategy for advancing universal preschool policy change.
Dear Adversity, I write to you not to introduce myself, for you know me very well. You have shown up at my home uninvited and unwelcome...You have tunneled through my emotions, leaving them raw and dissected...leaving me feeling like a victim of circumstance. I write to you today to proclaim freedom! I no longer see you as an adversary, but rather as a means to obtain the prize... Has adversity caught you off guard, leaving you reeling in its wake of destruction? Do you find yourself overwhelmed by troubles—desperate for direction, answers, and most of all, peace? In Dear Adversity: Choosing Hope in Christ over Despair, author Brenda Miller Emmons explores her own experience with adversity, showing how to accept and even embrace life's challenges by pursuing an intimate relationship with Christ. As a Christian, you are not promised an escape from adversity; in fact, quite the opposite: it's not a question of if adversity will come, but when. Through her story, Emmons illustrates how to surrender each situation in your life, clinging to God's eternal promises in His Word rather than your own understanding. This knowledge will take you beyond temporary fixes, beyond fear and impatience, discovering His faithfulness to guide you through each trial into complete victory in Him.
Over twenty years have passed since the First Edition was published in 1998; in that time changes both technological and human have occurred. Regarding human changes, we regret the death of one of the co-authors, Dr. Paul S. Cohen, just as preparations began in 2004 for the Second Edition. Hence this book has a new co-author, Dr. Stephen M. Cohen. The basic premises and criteria for inclusion in our book, however, have not altered. The GPS has rendered the art of map-reading nearly obsolete and many sites have added instructions to their facilities. Thus we have removed the need for us to include detailed directions. In addition the Internet now provides most of us with a ready and quick fountain of site information, sometimes accurate, and occasionally not. This information includes details about most of the sites we have chosen to include in the Second Edition, such as temporary exhibits, changeable daily schedules of lectures, and guided tours. In fact, many websites even provide driving directions. By request of our readers we have included information about how to go to sites by public transportation. In the Second Edition, we continue our focus on providing an ancillary background to each site, including some of the unusual, unique, or important aspects of its collection. As before, at least one of the authors has visited practically every site we discuss. We now include each site's own website and unusual directions such as latitude and longitude to correct for occasional errors in GPS directions or when a site may be reached by water as well as land. Because this book showcases science and technology for a worldwide readership, we now indicate metric units as well as English units for all measurements. This edition now lists treasures in all fifty states. We have split America's Scientific Treasures into three separate volumes, highlighting different geographical areas of the United States: the East Coast, the Midwest, and the West. In this way, you, the user, can more easily carry this book as you travel"--

An NPR Best Book of 2021 NYPL 10 Best Books for Adults, 2021 A story collection, in the vein of Carmen Maria Machado, Kelly Link, and Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah, spanning worlds and dimensions, using strange and speculative elements to tackle issues ranging from class differences to immigration to first-generation experiences to xenophobia What does it mean to be other? What does it mean to love in a world determined to keep us apart? These questions murmur in the heart of each of Brenda Peynado’s strange and singular stories. Threaded with magic, transcending time and place, these stories explore what it means to cross borders and break down walls, personally and politically. In one story, suburban families perform oblations to cattlelike angels who live on their roofs, believing that their “thoughts and prayers” will protect them from the world’s violence. In another, inhabitants of an unnamed dictatorship slowly lose their own agency as pieces of their bodies go missing and, with them, the essential rights that those appendages serve. “The Great Escape” tells of an old woman who hides away in her apartment, reliving the past among beautiful objects she’s hoarded, refusing all visitors, until she disappears completely. In the title story, children begin to levitate, flying away from their parents and their home country, leading them to eat rocks in order to stay grounded. With elements of science fiction and fantasy, fabulism and magical realism, Brenda Peynado uses her stories to reflect our flawed world, and the incredible, terrifying, and marvelous nature of humanity.
America's Girl is an intimate look at the life and trials of Gertrude Ederle, who in 1926 not only became the first woman to swim across the English Channel, but broke the record set by men. The feat so thrilled America that it welcomed her home with a ticker tape parade that drew two million people. This fascinating portrait follows Ederle from her early days as a competitive swimmer through her gold medal triumph at the 1924 Olympics, to the first attempt the next year by Ederle to swim from France to England in frigid and turbulent waters, a feat that had been conquered by only five men up to that time. This is also a stirring look at the go-go era of the 1920s, when the country was about to recognize that women not only could vote, but compete on an international scale as athletes. At the height of Prohibition, Ederle's triumph over the formidable Channel was a triumph for women everywhere. America's Girl immerses readers in a pivotal era of American history and brings to life the spirit of that time.

A gripping first-hand story of personal triumph and recovery by a wealthy American housewife who appeared to have it all but who was, in reality, losing life's most important moments in an alcohol-induced haze. Brenda Wilhelmson was like a lot of women in her neighborhood. She had a husband and two children. She was educated and made a good living as a writer. She had a vibrant social life with a tight circle of friends. She could party until dawn and take her children to school the next day. From the outside, she appeared to have it all together. But, in truth, alcohol was slowly taking over, turning her world on its side. Waking up to another hangover, growing tired of embarrassing herself in front of friends and family, and feeling important moments slip away, Brenda made the most critical decision of her life: to get sober. She kept a diary of her first year (and beyond) in recovery, chronicling the struggles of finding a meeting she could look forward to, relating to her fellow alcoholics, and finding a sponsor with whom she connected. Along the way, she discovered the challenges and pleasures of living each day without alcohol, navigating a social circle where booze is a centerpiece, and dealing with her alcoholic father's terminal illness and denial. Brenda Wilhelmson's Diary of an Alcoholic Housewife offers insight, wisdom, and relevance for readers in recovery, as well as their loved ones, no matter how long they've been sober.

Self-raising four daughters while establishing a career as an electrologist /esthetician, I owned a large day spa for 32 years. I have written murder/mystery/comedy dinner theater shows that ran for eight years in the Greater Boston area. I taught art to youngsters and adults and visited art museums throughout the world. On one of my trips I was fortunate to visit the Huntington in San Marino, California. I was mesmerized when I saw all the beautiful first editions and numerous art collections. This visit gave me the inspiration to write "Beyond Murder." Keywords - Fiction, Abuse, Mystery, Adventure, Thriller, Romance
