This book provides a theoretical and pragmatic guide to the use of situated learning within structured interpreting programs. Proponents of situated learning theory believe that meaningful learning occurs when students interact with others in the social contexts in which they will be working. With such interactions, students have the opportunity to apply their theoretical knowledge to authentic contexts that they will encounter throughout their professional lives. While a limited number of research articles exist about the use of situated learning in interpreter education, this is the first full book to provide the foundations for situated learning theory, show how to implement situated learning in interpreter education, and offer practical applications for maximizing authenticity in interpreting classrooms.
This book is a word-testimony of the steps to new birth in Christ. It is written in the terms of the beginning of natural life starting from conception and continuing into adulthood. Every stage is different, but continual, and so is the new birth in Christ. It is powerful and will lead you to your purpose and the direction in order to stay on course to your eternal destiny. Not only will you find your purpose, but the awareness of grace, forgiveness, power, benefits, God given gifts and talents are discovered as well. In my journey of pastoring for sixteen years, I found that many people were lacking the knowledge that is in this book.
Before Jesus went to the Father, he gave instructions to his followers to repent and change their way of thinking, for the kingdom was at hand. This would result in a new way of thinking for them. Things were no longer going to work the way they had before. He instructed them in the good news that the kingdom had begun. He healed all kinds of sickness and diseases and taught them that they could be great in this kingdom that was coming from heaven to earth. He explained how it would start small and would grow throughout the earth in the same manner that yeast multiplies in bread making, and the world would not even see it happening. He gave them the authority and ordered them to take charge of this kingdom and called them “children of the kingdom.” He gave them, and all who would hear about him through their teaching, the keys to function in this new kingdom and explained how this authority was activated by faith-filled words. He said the kingdom was like a man going into a far country and leaving his servants in charge and taught that they would be accountable for what they had accomplished when he returned. We are those people today. You will learn how this kingdom works, the authority of those in charge, and how to use your authority in the unseen realm.
This book is for those who are pregnant with something. This is for those who are seeking out a promise from God. When you perceive life as God’s does, it takes you on a journey to fulfill a calling that you might not have signed up for but was designed just for you. You’re walking out a pattern that was tailor-made for a life that no one else can give you except God. The journey is not for the swift but for the one who endures. It deals with being in toxic relationships to unprofitable seed. Transforming your whole being is the goal of this book. You must maintain a zealous spirit for the things of God! We as Christians understand that we have this stimulus itch to push us through tormented situations. Suffering is real, and to walk this journey, you might even get wounded along the way. But Jesus is right there to fix what is broken! The wounds come from having toxic people in your path. Learning how to get out of relationships that keep you bound will get you moving. God intended for us to have beautiful relationships when he decided to place Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden to tend to it. His intentions were to preserve them for a later use. God trusted them just like he’s trusting you and me to nurture the seed that he planted in the garden. Part of your garden is devoted to physical and spiritual growth for development of the seed. If the seed is not planted on the foundation that God is actively building on, there will be no results of an expected end.
The New Testament does not develop a systematic doctrine of salvation," writes Brenda Colijn. "Instead, it presents us with a variety of pictures taken from different perspectives." Students of the New Testament and of theology will both find their vision broadened and their understanding deepened by this rich, informative study. As the author seeks to understand their implications for people of faith, she uncovers how New Testament images provide the building blocks of the master story of redemption.
The story of the Bible starts with the simple statement, "In the beginning, God created . . ." From that first sentence of Genesis, the story of salvation unfolds in strange and wonderful mingling of the commonplace and the miraculous, the human and the transcendent. But if you were born after the baby boom, chances are the Bible seems more like an item of passing interest than a book of depth and meaning for the twenty-first century. If you're not familiar with the Bible, it can be difficult to put into perspective the puzzle of kings and prophets, giants and seven-headed dragons, shepherd boys and itinerant preachers, Old Testament law and New Testament grace. Meet the Bible introduces you to the full, epic sweep of the Bible -- the characters, the places, the times, the stories, and the meanings of this Book of books -- and shows you that even the most obscure passage can hold relevance for your life once you understand what to look for. Award-winning writer Philip Yancey and author Brenda Quinn are your guides on this one-year reading tour of the Bible. Each day's reading includes Scripture, contemporary commentary, and questions for contemplation -- all designed to offer insight into how the passage fits into the overall story of the Bible, and how it can speak to your life today. Meet the Bible takes you through the twists and turns of the Bible's many narratives, the high points and the low points, the good characters and the bad, as well as the eternal thoughts and descriptions of God and his Son, Jesus Christ. Here are stories to remember, images of real people and circumstances closer to your own life than you've ever imagined. By the time you've finished the year's worth of reading, you'll have gained a panoramic view of the whole Bible and a firm understanding of its ideas and teachings. If you've never read the Bible, or hardly know the Bible, or would just like to read the Bible in a fresh new way, Meet the Bible offers an inspiring mix of timeless wisdom and contemporary insight that will cause faith to ignite within you. Direct excerpts from Scripture give readers a panoramic tour of the Bible’s key passages, personalities, events, and ideas as the Old Testament sweeps into the New Testament. Culturally relevant commentary from Quinn and Yancey sheds light on each day’s passage, examining the twists and turns of the Bible’s many narratives, the high points and the low points, the good characters and the bad, as well as the eternal thoughts and descriptions of God and his Son. Reflections every five days provide life application for the week’s Scripture readings.
Through Women’s Eyes tells the vital story of women’s progress and setbacks on the road to autonomy and equality, within the framework of U.S. history.
This book is a fresh study of a familiar story. It offers the opportunity for self-examination and hope in a world of disappointment. When the author brings us to Lazarus' tomb to witness Jesus' command to 'come forth', it is as if Jesus is giving readers the command and permission to 'come forth' from calamity, heartaches or circumstances which have prevented us from wholehearted living--to come out of our own tombs of darkness"--Back cover.
“You need to leave, no one wants you here, go back to where you came from." It seemed someone, or maybe many someone’s, wanted them gone. Feeling called by God to pastor a tiny church in the town of Chesterville, Manitoba, Pastor Jackson and his family looked forward to moving, meeting new people, and making new friends. However, it didn’t take long for them to discover that underneath the visible charm of the little prairie town, nothing was quite as it seemed. In just a matter of weeks, the Jackson family knew, somehow, their coming to Chesterville had unearthed a buried conflict. People turned their backs to walk in the other direction or crossed the street to avoid them. With sly comments and polite smiles, they shuffled their feet and wouldn’t make eye contact, but no one was talking. Did they make a mistake coming here? Had they misinterpreted what they believed was God’s call to pastor in this town? Clearly, they were unwanted and wondered if they should pack up and leave. But, with prayer and a devotion to God, and joining his courageous congregation, they determined to stay and learn what was tearing the town apart. More than anything, Pastor Matthew wanted to see the town restored. Question was, could it be done?

In Understanding the Holy Spirit, author and psychologist Dr. Brenda Rambo presents a comprehensive description of the function and purpose of the Holy Spirit and the role He has played in biblical and modern history. This book supplies readers who are hungry for a greater understanding of the Holy Spirit and His gifts with a clear and Scripture-based explanation of how the most overlooked person of the Trinity can be a valuable source of power for the believer and a gateway to experiencing an enhanced relationship with God the Father and Jesus, His Son.
Because of its virtual absence in the long tradition of biblical study, the Gospel of Mark offers an extraordinary case history of how changing cultural circumstances influence biblical reception. Brenda Deen Schildgen examines what characteristics of Mark led to its being included in the canon of Scriptures and then explores the history of its reception. While focusing primarily on this single gospel, Schildgen examines numerous other works in the periods under consideration in order to provide a context for her discussion. Ultimately, observes Schildgen, we can see that when Mark receives attention, the form that its reception takes is an indicator of new historical forces at work. Multidisciplinary in approach, her work will be of interest not only to biblical scholars but to all those interested in hermeneutics, literary and critical theory, and the relationship between historical and literary studies.
Whispers Amidst The Shadows is a book of daily reading that will encourage and give strength to living a life with God as the focus. The true meaning of this book is the whispers that you will hear within when reading.
The witch, the vampire and the werewolf endure in modern horror. These "old monsters" have their origins in Aristotle as studied in the universities of medieval Europe, where Christian scholars reconciled works of natural philosophy and medicine with theological precepts. They codified divine perfection as warm, light, male and associated with the ethereal world beyond the moon, while evil imperfection was cold, dark, female and bound to the corrupt world below the moon. All who did not conform to divine goodness--including un-holy women and Jews--were considered evil and ascribed a melancholic, blood hungry and demonic physiology. This construct was the basis for anti-woman and anti-Jewish discourse that has persisted through modern Western culture. Nowhere is this more evident than in horror films, where the witch, the vampire and the werewolf represent our fear of the inverted other.
Whither Thou Goest is the amazing story of a modern day Ruth and Boaz. How God used a background of war, disaster, and family separation to bring His two children together will touch your heart and increase your faith. American missionary Karl Faulkner found himself stranded in Poland with war breaking out and doors to sharing the Gospel closing all around him. Such were the circumstances which forced him out of Poland into Hungary, and eventually made him return to the United States. Had Karl misinterpreted the messages he’d received directing him to witness to the Jews of Eastern Europe? His answer would come years later, when he was contacted by the Red Cross. A family that had befriended Karl in Hungary now sought refuge from the Communist regime and needed an American sponsor. They were bringing friends with them, one of which was to become Karl’s wife. Terezia Toth left behind all the world she had ever known—her relatives, church, and ability to earn a living, even her language and social customs when she and her companions arrived in the United States. Thanks to the sponsorship of two Baptist churches in Oregon, they were well provided for. But everything was different and strange. Life would be so much easier living among other refugees in California. Why was God asking her to stay behind and marry a man she did not know, who didn’t even speak her language? Yet Terezia was willing to echo the words of Ruth, “Whither thou goest, I will go…” committing to follow her husband wherever the Lord led. It was a vow that would try her faith and take her to the brink of reason. The end result was to become a marriage built on mutual devotion and endearing love, yielding eternal fruit blossoming in the garden of Paradise.
Within this text, readers will unfold the treasure hidden within their hearts, experience the passion of the Father's heartbeat, understand God's plan for kingdom expansion, know the depth of God's love, and more as the simple but profound words move the reader deeper into the throne room and the presence of the King. White Heat is the first book to portray the remarkable relationship between America's most beloved poet and the fiery abolitionist who first brought her work to the public. As the Civil War raged, an unlikely friendship was born between the reclusive poet Emily Dickinson and Thomas Wentworth Higginson, a literary figure who ran guns to Kansas and commanded the first Union regiment of black soldiers. When Dickinson sent Higginson four of her poems he realized he had encountered a wholly original genius; their intense correspondence continued for the next quarter century. In White Heat Brenda Wineapple tells an extraordinary story about poetry, politics, and love, one that sheds new light on her subjects and on the roiling America they shared.

From a brief Scripture backdrop, Brenda gleans personal truths from these heroes. Recall how God chose to involve women in His plans in daring, yet ordinary life moments. Have you ever tried to read the Bible from start to finish but found it too complicated or overwhelming, causing you to give up even before you’re partway through the Old Testament? No book is as life changing as the Holy Bible. And yet, so many people have a difficult time reading it, getting bogged down with the genealogies in 1 Chronicles or the seeming convoluted laws of Leviticus, never mind the confusing imagery of Revelation. Furthermore, they have no idea how the people, events, and themes of the Old Testament connect with the New Testament and vice versa. If this describes your experience, then Journey Through the Bible is the perfect book for you. Wherever you are in your faith journey, this book of 406 daily readings makes each part of the Bible relevant, clear, and easy to understand. By inserting several points of interest along the way, author Brenda Ryan emphasizes the messages that are relevant to you and your faith walk while also connecting the Old Testament with the New Testament and the promise of a Saviour. Each reading includes, on average, three chapters of the Bible in chronological order, from Genesis to Revelation. At the end of each reading, space is provided for you to jot down and reflect upon any other points of interest that you encounter along the way. By the time you complete your journey, not only will you have a clear overview of the Bible and its one big story, you’ll be ready— and eager—to start all over again.

There, she encounters Major Ruse Blackburn and his skinning knifea man with a grudge to settle and a proclivity for cutting pretty flesh. Anne finds herself completely without resources and must make difficult decisions. A very entertaining, mile-a-minute style, and remarkably vivid characters. Diana Gabaldon, New York Times bestselling author of the award winning Outlander novels.
Two of the most notable figures from the Middle Ages–the volatile, brilliant Abelard and the equally brilliant Heloise–became the parents of their son Astralabe before Abelard’s infamous, brutal castration. The couple spent the rest of their lives as monastics, in each other’s orbits if not in shared presence, as they became movers in the glittering monastic world of the early twelfth-century France. What happened to their strangely named Astralabe? Astralabe: The Life and Times of the Son of Heloise and Abelard rescues the “lost son” from footnotes and fiction and attempts to tell instead the story of a real man living in Europe in the twelfth century. This book assembles the references to Astralabe, provides background in the history of France and Switzerland, uncovers Abelard’s relationships with his family, with the ruling house of Brittany and more, and most importantly draws together all that is known of Astralabe.
How can I possibly be “good enough for God”? It’s simple: by believing in the work and accepting the salvation of God’s Son, Jesus Christ. This brand-new study explains how the righteousness of Jesus is applied to sinners—like me!—when we truly acknowledge Him as savior and lord. Based on the key Bible passage of Romans 4, which describes Abraham’s “justification by faith,” Good Enough for God shares the encouraging—even thrilling—message that anyone can be good enough for God. The promise is “for us, to whom God will credit righteousness—for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead” (Romans 4:24 niv).
With the onslaught of terrorism, comes the question "WHY?" The fact is evil has reigned in the hearts of men and women long before our generation. Every time we are selfish or mean it causes pain to someone. Sin is the cause of evil, not God. From the very beginning God has allowed men and women the freedom of choice and when wrong choices are made there are consequences. The consequences usually affect more than the guilty one(s). God never intended His special creation to choose evil. You Were Created explains God's love for us even when we disobey Him. It covers several areas that we struggle with every day. His answer is not a government economic or welfare program. It is a program that, in love, calls His children back home to Him. It is about change from the inside out that gives us the desire to do good instead of evil. It is a program that will give peace even amidst extreme turmoil.
Edifying The Body of Christ is not only the title of this Christian book on the Holy Spirit, but it is also one of the gifts of Christ through men in Ephesians 4:10-13. Ephesians 4:10-13 tells us that as Jesus ascended to heaven, He gave various gifts to humanity for the perfecting and equipping of the body of Christ. Author and ordained minister Brenda Johnson passionately follows this mandate. In Edifying The Body of Christ, the Holy Spirit guides her. It unveils scripture to help believers fight the devil, obey the practical application of scripture, and help them understand God’s purpose for their lives. This book studies the Bible and the biblical truths that lie within it. Written in a style that can be easily read and understood, she covers the power of Christ in a believer's life and the fruit of the Spirit with scripture references. It is illumination and enlightenment for anyone who desires to learn more about Jesus, the Holy Spirit, and biblical truth. The scripture references are taken from the King James version of the Holy Bible unless otherwise indicated. Edifying The Body of Christ is born out of the abundance of God’s grace and a desire to build up the Body of Christ. All glory be to God.

For years, I have heard real-life stories from women in the midst of a storm. Their stories have been heart-wrenching because of powerful feelings of hopelessness. They have experienced tragic losses, severely broken childhoods, rebellion of many kinds, abortion, sexual abuse, abusive relationships, broken marriages and many other desperate situations. So often, hearing someone elses story with similar experiences created hope. These ladies show with Gods grace, no situation is beyond restoration and healing! Some familiar questions I consistently hear from broken hearts are: Where is my hope? Will I survive this? Am I being punished by God? Will I ever be able to trust again? Will my children and family survive this? How do you forgive God and the one who hurt you? How do you forgive yourself? My shame is overwhelming. How do you overcome it? Did you feel angry? Did you get mad at God? How did you get out of bed in the morning? Where is God in all this mess? How can a good God let this happen? Do you hear me God? What do I do about all the gossip? How can God use this tragedy for good?
It is so easy to judge another person's motives, in essence to judge their heart, without ever considering their journey. If we are honest, all of us would admit to having some type of personal bias, and sometimes, whether we intend to or not, that bias turns to judgment. Have you ever had the unpleasant experience of someone passing judgment on you? Most people have, but everyone has also judged someone else. So how do you balance compassion and conformity or empathy and complacency? Moving From Judgment: How to Have an Open Heart in a Closed World offers a practical approach to answer those deep-seated questions that Christians struggle with. Authors Joe and Brenda Rinehart examine the sources of critical attitudes and outline how to see people compassionately through the eyes of Christ. Each chapter is divided into three sections: material designed for understanding the concepts discussed, a going deeper section for personal or group study, and a prayer section that is specific to the material covered in the chapter. After reading Moving from Judgment: How to Have an Open Heart in a Closed World, you will not see other people (or even yourself) quite the same way again.
