The purpose of They Who Give from Evil is to consider the financial and salvific implications of usury on the community and the individual soul as it is addressed within the sermons of a selection of early Christian Greek authors, in the historical context of the fourth century Roman Empire. Although focusing on two Greek texts, St. Basil's Homily on Psalm Fourteen and Against Those Who Practice Usury by St. Gregory of Nyssa, Ihssen is able to shed fascinating insight on Roman life and illustrate the rich social justice theologies of the patristic world.

This undisputedly invaluable collection of beneficial tales provides contemporary society with a fuller picture of an imperfect social history of this period: it is a rich source for understanding not only the piety of the monk but also the poor farmer. Brenda Llewellyn Ihssen fills a lacuna in classical monastic secondary literature by highlighting Moschos' unique contribution to the way in which a fertile Christian theology informed the ethics of not only those serving at the altar but also those being served. Introducing appropriate historical and theological background to the tales, Llewellyn Ihssen demonstrates how Moschos' tales addresses issues of the autonomy of individual ascetics and lay persons in relationship with authority figures. Economic practices, health care, death and burials of lay persons and ascetics are examined for the theology and history that they obscure and reveal. Whilst teaching us about the complicated relationships between personal agency and divine intercession, Moschos’ tales can also be seen to reveal liminal boundaries we know existed between the secular and the religious.

The witch, the vampire and the werewolf endure in modern horror. These "old monsters" have their origins in Aristotle as studied in the universities of medieval Europe, where Christian scholars reconciled works of natural philosophy and medicine with theological precepts. They codified divine perfection as warm, light, male and associated with the ethereal world beyond the moon, while evil imperfection was cold, dark, female and bound to the corrupt world below the moon. All who did not conform to divine goodness--including un-holy women and Jews--were considered evil and ascribed a melancholic, blood hungry and demonic physiology. This construct was the basis for anti-woman and anti-Jewish discourse that has persisted through modern Western culture. Nowhere is this more evident than in horror films, where the witch, the vampire and the werewolf represent our fear of the inverted other.
Because of its virtual absence in the long tradition of biblical study, the Gospel of Mark offers an extraordinary case history of how changing cultural circumstances influence biblical reception. Brenda Deen Schildgen examines what characteristics of Mark led to its being included in the canon of Scriptures and then explores the history of its reception. While focusing primarily on this single gospel, Schildgen examines numerous other works in the periods under consideration in order to provide a context for her discussion. Ultimately, observes Schildgen, we can see that when Mark receives attention, the form that its reception takes is an indicator of new historical forces at work. So often, hearing someone elses story with similar experiences created hope. These ladies show with Gods grace, no situation is beyond restoration and healing! Some familiar questions I consistently hear from broken hearts are: Where is my hope? Will I survive this? Am I being punished by God? Will I ever be able to trust again? Will my children and family survive this? How do you forgive God and the one who hurt you? How do you forgive yourself? My shame is overwhelming. How do you overcome it? Did you feel angry? Did you get mad at God? How did you get out of bed in the morning? Where is God in all this mess? How can a good God let this happen? Do you hear me God? What do I do about all the gossip? How can God use this tragedy for good?
