Born in Glasgow in 1850, Thomas Lipton was one of the world's first global entrepreneurs. His showmanship, business flair and customer-driven focus created a chain of nationwide grocery stores and the thriving Lipton tea business, making him a multi-millionaire. One key to his success was his complete control of every business he undertook, from production to the customer. A keen yachtsman, he mounted a British challenge against the American holders of the America's Cup on five occasions between 1898 and 1930 but was unsuccessful each time. Yet, in the process of doing so, his fame spread around the world and his name became a byword for sportsmanship and diplomacy. What is more, Lipton's astute association of business with a sport of international dimension established a trend that has become an accepted part of life today. Lipton exemplified the values of competitiveness, sportsmanship, perseverance and leadership in global business. Yet until now, no biography of Lipton has brought together these strands. Published at the advent of the America's Cup in Europe in 2007, this book reassesses and re-evaluates the life of the man whose dream it was to wrestle the Cup from American hands.

The history of an artillery unit and its role in the Civil War, at Vicksburg and beyond, with photos, maps, and illustrations. The celebrated Chicago Mercantile Battery was organized by the Mercantile Association, a group of prominent Chicago merchants, and mustered into service in August of 1862. The Chicagoans would serve in many of the Western theater’s most prominent engagements until the war ended in the spring of 1865. The battery accompanied Gen. William T. Sherman during his operations against Vicksburg as part of the XIII Corps under Gen. Andrew Jackson Smith. The artillerists performed well throughout the campaign at such places as Chickasaw Bluff, Port Gibson, Champion Hill, Big Black River, and the siege operations of Vicksburg. Ancillary operations included the reduction of Arkansas Post, Fort Hindman, Milliken’s Bend, Jackson, and many others. After reporting to Gen. Nathaniel Banks, commander of the Department of the Gulf, the Chicago battery transferred to New Orleans and ended up taking part in Banks’s disastrous Red River Campaign in Louisiana. The battery was almost wiped out at Sabine Crossroads, where it was overrun after hand-to-hand fighting. Almost two dozen battery men ended up in Southern prisons. Additional operations included expeditions against railroads and other military targets. Chicago’s Battery Boys is based upon many years of primary research and extensive travel by the author through Illinois, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Louisiana. Richard Williams skillfully weaves contemporary accounts by the artillerists themselves into a rich and powerful narrative that is sure to please the most discriminating Civil War reader. “Measures up to the standard of excellence set for this genre by the late John P. Rock mechanics is a field of applied science which has become recognised as a coherent engineering discipline within the last two decades. It consists of a body of knowledge of the mechanical properties of rock, various techniques for the analysis of rock stress under some imposed perturbation, a set of established principles expressing rock mass response to load, and a logical methodology for applying these notions and techniques to real physical prob lems. Some of the areas where application of rock mechanics concepts have been demonstrated to be of industrial value include surface and subsurface construction, mining and other methods of mineral recovery, geothermal energy recovery and subsurface hazardous waste isolation. In many cases, the pressures of industrial demand for rigour and precision in project or process design have led to rapid evolution of the engineering discipline, and general improvement in its basis in both the geosciences and engineering mechanics. An intellectual commitment in some outstanding research centres to the proper development of rock mechanics has now resulted in a capacity for engineering design in rock not conceivable two decades ago. Mining engineering is an obvious candidate for application of rock mechanics principles in the design of excavations generated by mineral extrac tion. This book is composed of two case studies. Each case study evaluates the performance of the attorney serving as the public defender in Duchesne County, Utah in 2007 and 2008. The case studies demonstrate that there are major flaws in the performance of the public defender with respect to very basic areas of expertise that would be expected of any competent public defender. A defendant should expect to have the public defender engage in (a) the effective cross examination of prosecution witnesses on relevant points ,as opposed to concentrating on completely irrelevant issues, (b) calling expert witnesses in order to impeach the veracity and credibility of prosecution witnesses, (c) placing the defendant on the stand so that his/her testimony would serve as a counterweight to the testimony of the prosecution witness(s), and (d) pointing out obvious false testimony made by prosecution witnesses, such as the claim made in case study one made by a certain prosecution witness that she was the mother of the defendant when her age was 37 and the defendants age was 34. It is mathematically impossible for this to be the case. Yet the Duchesne County prosecutor, a Mr. Charles, specifically refers to this person as being the mother of the defendant when examining a county sheriff, who likewise refers to this individual as the mother of the defendant. Such gross incompetence violates the constitutional rights of the defendant to adequate, competent representation.

Through readings of novels by Helena María Viramontes, Oscar Casares, Lorraine López, Maceo Montoya, Reyna Grande, Daniel Peña, and others, Brady illustrates how submerged captivities reveal the way mechanisms of constraint such as deportability ground institutional forms of carceral modernity and how such practices scale relations by naturalizing the logic of scalar hierarchies underpinning racial capitalism. By showing how representations of the captive child critique the entrenched logic undergirding colonial power, Brady challenges racialized modes of citizenship while offering visions for living beyond borders.
