Pikeville was founded in 1824 inside a bend in the Levisa Fork of the Big Sandy River at the foot of Peach Orchard Mountain. It was a river town for most of the 1800s with huge log rafts being floated downstream to the Ohio River and steamboats carrying people and goods back and forth. Three momentous events in Pikeville's history all occurred in 1889. The school that became the University of Pikeville opened, construction was completed on the Pike County Courthouse, and therein eight Hatfield combatants in the infamous Hatfield-McCoy Feud were convicted of murder. In the 1900s, coal mining began its century long run as the dominant industry. By 1960, the railroad, coal loadouts, congested streets, and frequent flooding were holding back growth. Mayor William C. Hambley led a 30-year effort to complete the Cut-through Project and made Pikeville the "City that Moves Mountains.

Empiricism provides the backbone of knowledge creation within social science disciplines (e.g., psychology, sociology) and applied domains of study (e.g., education, administration) alike. Yet, relative to such domains of inquiry, comparatively little empirical research on evaluation has occurred, and the research knowledge base been infrequently synthesized and integrated to influence theory and practice. The proposed book aims to fill this void with regard to participatory evaluation, a set of collaborative approaches to evaluation that is receiving considerable attention of late, including a growing body of empirical studies. The authors begin in Part 1 with the delineation of a widely known and familiar conceptual framework for participatory evaluation. They then use the framework in Part 2 as a guide to conducting an extensive review of the extant empirical knowledge base in participatory evaluation, culminating in a thematic analysis of what we know about the approach. In Part 3 the authors focus on methodological considerations of doing research on participatory evaluation through a critique of existing studies and an explication of design choices drawn from their own research program. Herein, we concisely summarize the physiological and pathophysiological aspects of arterial stiffening, and highlight the importance of increased arterial stiffness for future cardiovascular events. Factors contributing to increased arterial stiffness such as advancing age, obesity, race, sex differences and cardiorespiratory fitness are examined while elucidating the potential underlying mechanisms for each scenario. To conclude, we discuss novel interventions to prevent and/or reverse the arterial stiffening process in order to reduce cardiovascular risk. In response, Lincoln combined three small armies into the new Army of Virginia and placed it under Maj. Gen. John Pope, who had overseen several successes in the Western Theater. Pope’s aggressiveness and McClellan’s passivity on the Peninsula convinced Lee to send Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson’s wing of the Army of Northern Virginia to confront Pope. A bloody battle at Cedar Mountain on August 9 halted Pope’s move south, and Jackson’s raid on the vast stores at Manassas Junction triggered another confrontation, this time at Kettle Run. When McClellan’s troops abandoned the Peninsula, Lee moved his other wing under James Longstreet rapidly north. Pope missed an opportunity to prevent the junction of Lee’s wings by not stopping Longstreet at Thoroughfare Gap. The battle of Second Bull Run began on the evening of August 28 when Jackson tangled with Union troops at the Brawner Farm. Pope spent much of the next day hammering Jackson’s front, with no idea that Longstreet was arriving on the field. The Union assaults continued on August 30 until Longstreet launched a massive assault that rolled up the Union left flank and collapsed Pope’s army. The retreat was briefly interrupted by some of Jackson’s units at Chantilly, which ended the campaign.
