While Sir Richard’s two sons serve the Royal Navy at sea under constant peril of U-boat attacks, the war finds its way to Highfield in a covert attack that threatens the lives of his wife, their expectant daughter, and her husband, Michael Moreland, a SIS operative and Highfield’s original superintendent. Amid all the perils that war brings, secrets still find ways to endanger lives and relationships among Highfield’s denizens and friends. While war menaces from without, some discover that secrets threatening their peace lie within.
