Soviet Central Asia (1989) explores the economic development of the four republics of Central Asia that suffered under Moscow’s economic policies – Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Kirghizia. This book presents methods to improve information security for protected communication. It combines and applies interdisciplinary scientific engineering concepts, including cryptography, chaos theory, nonlinear and singular optics, radio-electronics and self-changing artificial systems. It also introduces additional ways to improve information security using optical vortices as information carriers and self-controlled nonlinearity, with nonlinearity playing a key "evolving" role. The proposed solutions allow the universal phenomenon of deterministic chaos to be discussed in the context of information security problems on the basis of examples of both electronic and optical systems. Further, the book presents the vortex detector and communication systems and describes mathematical models of the chaos oscillator as a coder in the synchronous chaotic communication and appropriate decoders, demonstrating their efficiency both analytically and experimentally. Lastly it discusses the cryptologic features of analyzed systems and suggests a series of new structures for confident communication.
The book contains a consistent and sufficiently comprehensive theory of smooth functions and maps insofar as it is connected with differential calculus. The scope of notions includes, among others, Lagrange inequality, Taylor’s formula, finding absolute and relative extrema, theorems on smoothness of the inverse map and on conditions of local invertibility, implicit function theorem, dependence and independence of functions, classification of smooth functions up to diffeomorphism. The concluding chapter deals with a more specific issue of critical values of smooth mappings. In Khazaria in the Ninth and the Tenth Centuries Boris Zhivkov offers a new view on Khazaria by scrutinizing the different visions offered by recent scholarship. The paucity of written sources has made it necessary to turn to additional information about the steppe states in this period, and to analyze exceptional cases not directly related to the Khazars. In re-examining the Khazars, he thus uses not only the known documentary sources and archaeological finds but also what we know from history of religions (comparative mythology), history of art, structural anthropology and folklore studies. In this way the book draws together a synthesis of conclusions, information and theory.
Catastrophe or Catharsis? Lays bare the reasons why the Soviet economic reform has plunged into crisis. In precise, vivid prose, Menshikov describes the exhaustion of the ‘command system’ in the pre-perestroika era. His book exposes the bureaucratic irresponsibility which, for example, allowed industrial ministries to strip enterprises of their re-investment funds, ensuring that the simple maintenance of production would in time become impossible. Analysing Soviet economic policy during the perestroika years, Menshikov again paints a picture of adventurism and incompetence. We learn of ‘black holes’ in the state budget, and of how finance ministry officials concealed huge deficits by annexing the savings bank deposits of the population. Menshikov’s analysis of the perestroika period is built around a powerfully argued thesis: the Soviet state bureaucracy, he sets out to show, has increasingly fused with the ‘shadow economy’ to form a new mechanism of fraud, theft and economic disruption. Can total catastrophe be avoided, and can a process of purgation and recovery—that is catharsis—now ensue? Menshikov advances a detailed program for getting economic reform back on track while avoiding a further collapse of living standards. Here are specific proposals for curbing inflation, reducing budget deficits and ending the sway of the ‘shadow economy’. These tasks can still be accomplished, the author argues, without sacrificing the interests of the mass of the Soviet population.
