The Saddle Club is in England for a show on the grounds of an old estate where a past duke and his beloved stallion died and where, legend has it, the duke buried treasure.
From the wainscoted conference rooms of an old-money Philadelphia law firm to the deserted grounds and stables of a once-grand Main Line estate, author/lawyer Bonnie MacDougal has crafted a masterful, richly detailed novel with fast-paced suspense rivaling the best of John Grisham and Richard North Patterson. Breach of Trust takes us into the '90s-style looting and plundering of a multimillion-dollar trust, an intricate conspiracy fueled by financial cunning and lethal greed, set against an unexpected white-hot love affair between Dan Casella, street fighter turned corporate lawyer, and Jennifer Lodge, his resourceful, winsome associate. A recent law school graduate, Jennifer is thrilled when Dan brings her on board to assist with a major case—the theft of two million dollars from the trust fund of a rival firm's client. Dan's job is to defend Scott Sterling, a naive, well-connected young attorney who swears that he took the money in a desperate attempt to cover up devastating stock market losses in the private investment account of the fund's trustee, coal baron Curtis Mason—who had been like a father to Scott. Now Mason is suing—for fifteen million dollars. Late work nights and a killer snowstorm bring Dan and Jennifer together—and the passion they've been suppressing finally explodes. But after an intense, unforgettable weekend at the Jennifer’s rural carriage house, Dan is pulled back into South Philly's streets and a family crisis he can't ignore. Mistaking Dan's strict business ethics for cold-bloodedness, Jennifer makes a crucial career decision, followed by a personal one that will drastically affect her future—and draw her deeper into the case. As their lives and careers intertwine once more, Dan and Jennifer enter a deadly vortex of scandal, jealousy, blackmail, betrayal, and murder—and expose a fraud that will rock the city's legal community, and the very foundations of Philadelphia society. Studded with an array of vividly realized characters, including charismatic corporate shark Jack Stengel; earthy police detective Mike diMaio; elegant, vodka-belting Cassie Chapman and her aristocratic father, Reese; and Dan's brother, Tony Casella, a volatile teenager flirting with crime, Bonnie MacDougal's BREACH OF TRUST is a savvy tour de force. Delivering deft plot twists, sharply observed players, an in-depth command of legal chicaneries, and an authentic feel for Philadelphia's rough streets, courtrooms, and elite preserves, it is an exceptional debut. "BREACH OF TRUST is wonderfully exciting, a first-rate 'Once-upon-a-time-there-were-two lawyers' adventure. Bonnie MacDougal knows those three-piece pin-striped suits—and she also understands the hearts that beat beneath them."—Susan Isaacs, author of Lily White

Everyone knows the battles of the Civil War, with their generals and their soldiers. But few people living today know the story of Mary “Mother” Bickerdyke, a hero in her time. Mother: The Life of Mary Bickerdyke is the story of a woman who revolutionized the healing process. Mary travelled the width and breadth of America, working in hospitals, asylums, prisons, missions, houses of the poor...and at many a battlefield. She is most often recognized for her work during the American Civil War, but her loving toil occurred throughout her long life. Mary helped soldiers and generals, paupers and farmers, orphans and amputees. She loved her country and its people, and gave up a life of ease to care for others. As Mary Livermore once wrote, the good woman “lived a grand, good life, packed with noble deeds wrought for others.” Now, her astounding history has been captured for the modern reader in Mother: The Life of Mary Bickerdyke.
A small French settlement thrived for half a century on the west bank of the Mississippi River before the Louisiana Purchase made it part of the United States in 1803. But for the citizens of Ste. Genevieve, becoming Americans involved more than simply acknowledging a transfer of power. Bonnie Stepenoff has written an engaging history of Missouri’s oldest permanent settlement to explore what it meant to be Americanized in our country’s early years. Picking up where other studies of Ste. Genevieve leave off, she traces the dramatic changes wrought by the transfer of sovereignty to show the process of social and economic transformation on a young nation’s new frontier. Stepenoff tells how French and Spanish residents—later joined by German immigrants and American settlers—made necessary compromises to achieve order and community, forging a democracy that represented different approaches to such matters as education, religion, property laws, and women’s rights. By examining the town’s historical circumstances, its legal institutions, and especially its popular customs, she shows how Ste. Genevieve differed from other towns along the Mississippi. Stepenoff has plumbed the town’s voluminous archives to share previously untold stories of Ste. Genevieve citizens that reflect how Americanization affected their lives. In these pages we meet a free woman of color who sued a prominent white family for support of her children; a slave who obtained her own freedom and then purchased her daughters’ freedom; a local sheriff who joined Aaron Burr’s conspiracy; and a doctor who treated cholera victims and later became a U.S. senator. More than colorful characters, these are real people shown pursuing justice and liberty under a new flag. The story of Ste. Genevieve serves as a testament to Tocqueville’s observations on American democracy while also challenging some of the commonly held beliefs about that institution. From French Community to Missouri Town provides a better understanding not only of how democracy works but also of what it meant to become American when America was still young.

Proposing that Samuel Richardson's novels were crucial for the construction of female individuality in the mid-eighteenth century, Bonnie Latimer shows that Richardson's heroines are uniquely conceived as individuals who embody the agency and self-determination implied by that term. In addition to placing Richardson within the context of his own culture, recouping for contemporary readers the influence of Grandison on later writers, including Maria Edgeworth, Sarah Scott, and Mary Wollstonecraft, is central to her study. Latimer argues that Grandison has been unfairly marginalised in favor of Clarissa and Pamela, and suggests that a rigorous rereading of the novel not only provides a basis for reassessing significant aspects of Richardson's fictional oeuvre, but also has implications for fresh thinking about the eighteenth-century novel. Latimer's study is not a specialist study of Grandison but rather a reconsideration of Richardson's novelistic canon that places Grandison at its centre as Richardson's final word on his re-envisioning of the gendered self.
Contemporary women face barriers as they try to balance family and careers, choose the most promising education and employment options, and run for elected office. Women, Power, and Political Change analyzes the lives of sixteen American women who facilitated social and political changes in the seventeenth, eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries. These women were entrepreneurs--a small group advocating policies that imposed costs on some Americans but generated benefits for women. Using qualitative and quantitative data, Bonnie G. Mani describes the social and political context of the times when each of the women lived and worked. What she uncovers regarding the similarities and differences between these women demonstrates how women can influence public policy without holding elected office and without personal wealth. This is a must-read book for anyone interested in the evolution of women's political roles in American history.
Over one hundred fifty years ago, champions of women's rights in the United States, Britain, France, and Germany formed the world's earliest international feminist movement. Joyous Greetings is the first book to tell their story. From Seneca Falls in upstate New York to the barricades of revolutionary Paris, from the Crystal Palace in London to small towns in the German Rhineland, early feminists united to fight for the cause of women. At the height of the Victorian period, they insisted their sex deserved full political equality, called for a new kind of marriage based on companionship, claimed the right to divorce and to get custody of their children, and argued that an unjust economic system forced women into poorly paid jobs. They rejected the traditional view that women's subordination was preordained, natural, and universal. In restoring these daring activists' achievements to history, Joyous Greetings passes on their inspiring and empowering message to today's new generation of feminists.
The Encyclopedia of Women in World History captures the experiences of women throughout world history in a comprehensive, 4-volume work. Although there has been extensive research on women in history by region, no text or reference work has comprehensively covered the role women have played throughout world history. The past thirty years have seen an explosion of research and effort to present the experiences and contributions of women not only in the Western world but across the globe. Historians have investigated womens daily lives in virtually every region and have researched the leadership roles women have filled across time and region. They have found and demonstrated that there is virtually no historical, social, or demographic change in which women have not been involved and by which their lives have not been affected. The Oxford Encyclopedia of Women in World History benefits greatly from these efforts and experiences, and illuminates how women worldwide have influenced and been influenced by these historical, social, and demographic changes. The Encyclopedia contains over 1,250 signed articles arranged in an A-Z format for ease of use. The entries cover six main areas: biographies; geography and history; comparative culture and society, including adoption, abortion, performing arts; organizations and movements, such as the Egyptian Uprising, and the Paris Commune; womens and gender studies; and topics in world history that include slave trade, globalization, and disease. With its rich and insightful entries by leading scholars and experts, this reference work is sure to be a valued, go-to resource for scholars, college and high school students, and general readers alike.
