Dollmaker is a historical review of a war many would just as soon forget. But Dollmaker is different. It provides the reader with an alternative outcome. Le Bon, or Lady Bon, as she is affectionately known, finds passionate outlet early in life as a doll maker. She makes dolls of every description. Starting with dolls of cloth and clay, she soon graduates to crafting dolls of flesh and blood. Breaking traditional gender roles, she ascends to the highest pinnacles of power organizing a grassroots paramilitary force called the Blue Shirts. Soon these Vietnamese shock troops under her command garner respect with their communist foes. All during this time, a gung-ho Marine named Mike Grant is working his way up the ladder of military prestige and influence. When the female Vietnamese firebrand and the ambitious American meet, the war, its outcome, and the world would never be the same again. Dollmaker peels back the scab covering our collective consciousness regarding Vietnam. It exposes the underlying passions behind power and power's corrupting tincture. It is also a candid, frequently scathing review of what we, as humans, hold dear and what we often blindly adhere to through our allegiance to tradition.

Ah, there is another person looking at me as though I am off my rocker. Just because I have started dictating into a hands-free tape player to keep records and perhaps help me solve a case I am working on and to have memoirs for my later years, people have a tendency to think that I am talking to myself. Perhaps, in a way, I am. These new gadgets, they have no tape or CD and are marvelous. I have an earpiece that looks like the hands-free phone headset that I talk into. The tape player, which is no bigger than a candy bar, stays in my pocket. At the end of the day, I can download onto my stick on my computer until I have a chance to type them onto paper. So let them look on. I will smile and keep on talking.

In the 1950s, science was rapidly advancing, and so were scientific opportunities for women. Modern science fiction films reflected these simultaneous social developments. This book proposes that the social ideology of the 1950s, which was partly concerned with gender issues, saturated the B science fiction films of that era and inspired a new appreciation for the role of women in scientific advancements and other social achievements. Drawing on feminist literary and cultural theory, the author argues that the emergence of the modern American science fiction film in 1950 and the situation of post-World War II female scientists together created a film genre. That genre was explicitly amenable to exploring the tension between a woman's place in her home and her place in the work force, particularly in scientific fields. Early chapters provide a general introduction to the science fiction genre and specifically describe 1950s B science fiction films as they resonate with concerns proper to feminist theory. Subsequent chapters offer detailed, historically situated readings of 10 B science fiction films from the 1950s that feature women in science. The cinematic representations of female scientists are compared and contrasted with real female professionals of the time, illuminating the changing gender dynamics reflected in popular film in the 1950s. Films analyzed include Rocketship X-M, It Came from Beneath the Sea, Them!, Tarantula, The Deadly Mantis, Beginning of the End, Kronos, Cat-Women of the Moon, World Without End, and Queen of Outer Space.

The rulers of the Mughal Empire of India, who reigned from 1526 to 1858, spared no expense as patrons of the arts, particularly painting and music. They left as their legacy an extraordinarily rich body of commissioned artistic projects including illustrated manuscripts and miniature paintings that represent musical instruments, portraits of musicians, and the compositions of ensembles. These images from the basis of Bonnie C. Wade's study of how musicians of Hindustan encountered and Indianized music from the Persian cultural sphere. Combining ethnomusicological and art historical methods with history and lore, Wade has written a truly interdisciplinary study of cultural life on the Indian subcontinent. Wade focuses first on Akbar, showing how political and cultural agendas intertwined in the portrayal of Mughal court life. She then follows the depictions of music-making through paintings of Akbar's successors, Jahangir and Shah Jahan, to trace the gradual synthesis of Persian and Indian culture. Because music of the period was not notated but was transmitted orally, Wade relies on this wealth of visual evidence to reconstruct the musical life of the Mughals and its relation to the Mughal political agenda. As a major untapped resource, these images suggest new interpretations of the history of the Mughal Empire -- including original ideas about the role of patrons in the production of the arts and, importantly, the role of women in Mughal court life -- that are confirmed and complemented by the written sources of the period. Imaging Sound is a contribution to many fields in its unique combination of sources and methods: it is the study of musical change; of image-making in the pastand the methodological use of images as "texts" in the present; of the role of patronage in the Mughal Empire; and of the development of South Asian culture. In her synthesis of music, literature, art, and culture, Wade deepens our knowledge of the manner in which the orally transmitted tradition of Hindustani music came to be what it is today. The book is beautifully illustrated with more than 180 reproductions of Mughal paintings and manuscripts. These rare images are the basis for a study that is fully immersed both in current intellectual debates and in three centuries of Mughal cultural life.
