Seeing that our paths are destined to cross, We by instinct maneuvered so that no time is lost To clear each others way adjusting on either side, As that point was reached so that we do not collide. With an acute acknowledgment from eye to eye As we without accident past and I asked why. Since nothing is by chance I wondered at each quick glance. What the meaning was of this encounter Did God decide you and I make silent banter?

Four nostalgic, heart-warming Christmas romances to curl up with and enjoy. ANNIE'S LETTER: (prequel to Lantern In The Window) 1885--WIFE WANTED, OLDER WOMAN, MUST HAVE KNOWLEDGE OF HOUSEWIFERY AND FARMING. OBJECT, MATRIMONY. Annie answered Noah’s newspaper ad for a mail order wife because her deaf sister, Bets, was going to die if she went on working in Lazenby’s Cotton Mill. Annie's landlady, Elinora Potts, assured Annie that the not-so-little lies she told in her letters were necessary. Does the end ever justify the means? Elinora is certain it does. BUT ANNIE IS TERRIFIED. What will happen to her and Bets when Noah finds out the truth? LANTERN IN THE WINDOW; Annie, a young, desperate mail-order bride, who's never laid eyes on a cow, marries Noah, a farmer who advertises for an experienced, older farm woman. And she also doesn't mention that her deaf sister is part of the bargain. But Noah isn't honest either. His old, sick father needs cared for--and even Noah can't deal with the old man's anger and violence. Needed-one big Christmas miracle! CAROL'S CHRISTMAS; December 23, 1914, in a small coal mining town deep in the Canadian Rockies. What changes can a faraway war bring to a tiny coal mining town, and the woman who's struggling to know herself? Carol, with her two beautiful babies and the husband she adores, can't help but envy Julia, the mysterious woman next door, who seems to have no worries about money. Carol invites Julia and her husband to Christmas Eve supper, and learns that how others live might not be what she yearns for. SNOW KISSED CHRISTMAS: 1903 IN A WESTERN COAL MINING TOWN. Christmas Eve, snow, a new baby coming---and no money. Deep in the Rocky Mountains of British Columbia, Anna lives with her husband, William, and her two young children, Sophie, 7, and Thomas, 5. The underground coal mine where William works isn't operating full time, and although they've made toys for Sophie and Thomas, Anna is frightened and sad, worried for her beloved family. It's snowing hard, and the world feels bleak and joyless. IT WOULD TAKE A MIRACLE TO MAKE THIS STORMY CHRISTMAS MERRY. Sometimes miracles can come in the most remarkable fashion. And sometimes the angels that bring them are the most unlikely.

In recent years Nietzsche has emerged as a presiding genius of our intellectual epoch. Although scholars have noted the influence of Nietzsche's thought on Wallace Stevens, the publication of Early Stevens establishes, for the first time, the extent to which Nietzsche pervades Steven's early work. Concentrating on poems published between 1915 and 1935--but moving occasionally into later poems, as well as letters and essays--B.J. Leggett draws together texts of Stevens and Nietzsche to produce new and surprising readings of the poet's early work. For instance, "Peter Quince at the Clavier" is read in the light of Nietzsche's discussion of Apollonian and Dionysian art in The Birth of Tragedy; Stevens' early poems on religion, including principally "Sunday Morning," are seen through the perspective of Nietzsche's doctrines of the transvaluation of values, genealogy, and the innocence of becoming; Stevens' notions of femininity, virility, and poetry are examined in relation to Nietzsche's texts on gender and creativity. This intertextual critique reveals previously undisclosed ideologies operating at the margins of Stevens' work, enabling Leggett to read aspects of the poetry that have until now been unreadable. Early Stevens also considers such issues as Stevens' perspectivism, his aphoristic style, the Nietzschean epistemology of his poems of order, and the implications of notions of art, untruth, fiction, and interpretation in both Stevens and Nietzsche. Though many critics have discussed the concept of intertextuality, few have attempted a truly intertextual reading of a particular poet. Early Stevens is an exemplary model of such a reading, marking a significant advance in both the form and substance of our understanding of this quintessential modern poet.

I wrote the story in first person; I wanted the reader to see what was written from each person’s point of view. Chapter One sets the foundation on the two worlds that are part of Richards life. His mother’s family coming from Greece in the early 1900’s. His father’s family having settled in America in the very early colonial days. We then go to each of the key people around Richard, see their lives, and their lives around “The Coney”. Like other short stories I have written, you always learn a great deal about the life of our family; the Harlan Line. The Coney first opened in 1921, this year, in June of 2021 will be 100 years open as a family diner. Another point is how Richard and I developed a closer connection, talking about our family, and life in general. My wife and I visited Richard and his family several years ago in Highland Park, Michigan. Our first meal together was at The Coney, we dined on a 100-year tradition of a Coney Hotdog, topped with the old family traditional chili that started back in 1921 - Bobby Joe.
Bobby Sands was 27 years old when he died. He spent almost nine years of his life in prison because of his Irish republican activities. He died, in prison, on 5 May 1981, on the sixty-sixth day of his hunger strike at Long Kesh Prison, outside Belfast. This book documents a day in the life of Bobby Sands. It is a tale of human bravery, endurance and courage against a backdrop of suffering, terror and harassment. It will live on as a constant reminder of events that should never have happened – and hopefully will never happen again.

When starting a family history project, where do you begin? For me, the answer is simple: Genesis. Being a man, a man of science, I find that as I get older, science has proven more and more that the truth is very simple. In the opening statements of Genesis, God created the universe as we know it and also created the stars. How is such a thing possible? We are children of God. You know, children are like their creator, full of wonder. Wonder, why? Genesis states, In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void and darkness was over the face of the deep. As we learn more on just how we got here, along comes a brilliant young scientist named Stephen Hawking. He explains in mathematical ways how the universe started with a big bang, started from nothing, and burst forth faster than the speed of light. Stars formed and gathered together to form galaxies then matter collected to form planets to circle around the stars. There was eternal darkness, and then there were the stars and light. As time passed, God planted the seeds of life. What is time? As we read the Bible, we were always in conflict with time. How do we feel comfortable with the evolution of life and the time frame of the Bible? Here, again, I find the answer is simple. Time, to us, is something we made up to understand what goes on around us; God is on his own time. I like to use baking an apple pie as my example of time and what it takes. Heres the question I ask, how long does it take to bake an apple pie? The answer I get is about an hour. I reply with Oh, you can? So here is my response to the one-hour apple pie: Where did the apple come from? How long did the apples take to grow? Where did that variety of apple come from? How long did it take for the seed to grow into a tree? How did you get the apple? At a store? How did the store get there? How did the refrigeration and transportation come to be? What about the cinnamon and sugar you used, where did it come from? (Cinnamon comes from Indiadried tree bark.) What about the tin used to make the pan used to bake the pie? When was electricity harnessed to be used by man, the modern stove?
From the beloved author of The Old Place comes a tender, funny, and fresh novel about a gay writer in New York City whose life is irrevocably altered, and then again thirty years later. In 1992, on his thirtieth birthday, Artie Anderson meets the man who will change his life. Artie spends his days at a tedious advertising job, finding relief in the corner of New York City he can call his own, even as the queer community is still being ravaged by HIV. But when his birthday celebration brings Artie and his friends to his favorite bar, a chance encounter with Abe, an uptight lawyer and Artie’s opposite in almost every way, pushes Artie to want, and to ask for, more for himself. Thirty years later, Artie is stunned when Halle and Vanessa, Abe’s daughter and ex-wife, announce they are moving across the country. Artie has built a lovely, if small, life, but their departure makes Artie realize that he might be lonelier than he previously thought. When a surprising injury pushes Artie into the hands of GALS, the local center for queer seniors, a rambunctious group of elders insist on taking him under their wing. Alternating between both timelines, Four Squares is an intimate look at what it means to find community at any age. With humor and compassion, it honors the enduring power of queer friendship, its history, and how essential it is to keep those stories alive.
The instant New York Times bestseller and “inspiring and vulnerable” (Trevor Noah) memoir from Bobby Hall, the multiplatinum recording artist known as Logic and the #1 bestselling author of Supermarket. This Bright Future is a raw and unfiltered journey into the life and mind of Bobby Hall, who emerged from the wreckage of a horrifically abusive childhood to become an era-defining artist of our tumultuous age. A self-described orphan with parents, Bobby Hall began life as Sir Robert Bryson Hall II, the only child of an alcoholic, mentally ill mother on welfare and an absent, crack-addicted father. After enduring seventeen years of abuse and neglect, Bobby ran away from home and—with nothing more than a discarded laptop and a ninth-grade education—he found his voice in the world of hip-hop and a new home in a place he never expected: the untamed and uncharted wilderness of the social media age. In the message boards and livestreams of this brave new world, Bobby became Logic, transforming a childhood of violence, anger, and trauma into music that spread a resilient message of peace, love, and positivity. His songs would touch the lives of millions, taking him to dizzying heights of success, where the wounds of his childhood and the perils of Internet fame would nearly be his undoing. A landmark achievement in an already remarkable career, This Bright Future “is just like the author—fearless, funny, and full of heart” (Ernest Cline, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Ready Player One) and looks back on Bobby’s extraordinary life with lacerating humor and fearless honesty. Heart-wrenching yet ultimately uplifting, this book completes the incredible true story and transformation of a human being who, against all odds, refused to be broken.

Winner of the 2009 Agnes Lynch Starrett Poetry Prize “There is something in American poetry that might be called the book of the small town or, equally, the tale of the good family; or, if you like, the American Grafitti Suite. Poems that discover life’s bonuses in new love, wise parents, old books, venerable nature, and the mysteries of all that endures in the face of the viciousness no life escapes—are, well, worth the wait. That’s how I feel about Paper Anniversary. His poems are full of the best news, the kind the soul, as W. C. Williams attested, can get nowhere better than in the life of the lively mind. I think any reader will find this an auspicious, welcome arrival.” —Dave Smith
This book examines how micro contextual issues inspire collective social action forms against everyday situations of crises and crimes through an inter-disciplinary, ethnographic, and comparative research conducted among Bishnois and Indian South Africans. Exploring the role of the publics that practise and mobilise their social movement imaginations, the work delves into peoples’ ability to move beyond their immediate contexts and politicise multiple social spaces and discursive spheres around them to project their causes. Mapping an anti-poaching movement spearheaded by the Bishnois of Western Rajasthan in India and an anti-substance abuse movement led by the historical Indian diaspora of South Africa, the author argues that such contemporary forms of organised social action replete with alternative frames, symbols, and repertoires possess key requisites to be understood as the ‘Newer Social Movements’ of the Global South. The volume will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of social and protest movements, migration and diaspora studies, political science, social anthropology, and ethnography.
