Necessary Beings is concerned with two central areas of metaphysics: modality—the theory of necessity, possibility, and other related notions; and ontology—the general study of what kinds of entities there are. Bob Hale's overarching purpose is to develop and defend two quite general theses about what is required for the existence of entities of various kinds: that questions about what kinds of things there are cannot be properly understood or adequately answered without recourse to considerations about possibility and necessity, and that, conversely, questions about the nature and basis of necessity and possibility cannot be satisfactorily tackled without drawing on what might be called the methodology of ontology. Taken together, these two theses claim that ontology and modality are mutually dependent upon one another, neither more fundamental than the other. Hale defends a broadly Fregean approach to metaphysics, according to which ontological distinctions among different kinds of things (objects, properties, and relations) are to be drawn on the basis of prior distinctions between different logical types of expression. The claim that facts about what kinds of things exist depend upon facts about what is possible makes little sense unless one accepts that at least some modal facts are fundamental, and not reducible to facts of some other, non-modal, sort. He argues that facts about what is absolutely necessary or possible have this character, and that they have their source or basis, not in meanings or concepts nor in facts about alternative 'worlds', but in the natures or essences of things.

It’s the story of the inventors, leaders, craftsmen and technical breakthroughs, beginning in the first year of the 20th century up to current times. Included is the story of the innovative sales techniques developed by Theobald that led to tight-fisted merchants being willing to spend four and five times as much for a Toledo “No Springs—Honest Weight” scale than for the scale it replaced. This led to Toledo becoming the best known scale brand in the nation. It includes the story of how a plastic came to be developed for Toledo Scale under the leadership of the company’s second president Hubert Bennett that led him to establish a separate, wholly owned company. This company, Plaskon, became the largest plastic company in the United States for a brief time. It tells of Toledo Scale’s World War II contributions in which the company played a top-secret part in the production of the Norden bombsight and the atomic bomb. The story includes quotations from both retired company executives and current employees. It includes information obtained from an unpublished factual manuscript covering the company’s first 50 years, other company archives and the Toledo Blade. A dozen historical photos are displayed, which include the first DeVilbiss computing scale, a Toledo Cash Register, and a Phinney scale which was the first patented computing scale. A few Phinney scales were manufactured in 1870. Since Toledo Scale couldn’t locate one to prove they were actually manufactured, they lost a huge lawsuit to Dayton Scale that almost broke the company. Also shown is a photo of Norman Bel Geddes’ 1929-30 radical designs of a new factory and plant campus for Toledo Scale, never built due to the depression. The story includes the transition to electronic scales begun by the company’s third president Harris McIntosh. This transition was completed in the final quarter of the century. And finally, the human story that resulted from the evolution of several different ownership’s is told, until just a few years ago, Toledo Scale disappeared as a separate brand and was merged into Mettler-Toledo, Inc.

On and off the links, Bob has been a strong competitor and an even stronger friend to fellow aficionados of the game. He taught golf for beginners in grades 4 through 8 in Vigo County for five summers before he coached high school golf for 26 seasons, the past 24 at Terre Haute South where his boys finished second, third and fourth at the IHSAA State Finals and his girls claimed eighth in the 1988 finals. Bobs students have gone on to display exceptional sportsmanship, win championships and secure positions as golf pros and competitive professionals around the country. As a result, in 1994, Bob was inducted into the Terre Haute Golf Association Hall of Fame. He is also in the Indiana Golf Coaches Hall of Fame. Bobs competitive golf game was set in motion when he won the Terre Haute Junior title in 1949. He later played at Indiana State Teachers College, now Indiana State University (ISU), and was the No. 1 player for three seasons, winning three Indiana Collegiate Conference titles and two Little State Championships. He was named ISUs Most Outstanding Athlete in 1954, the first golfer in the history of the institution to win the award. He won three Casey Opens, the Spaghetti Open, the Roundup of Champions and the 1988 City Seniors Championship. Bob teamed with Art Blakely to win the Terre Haute Four Ball title in 1963 and was medalist in the 1971 Terre Haute Golf Association Interclub Tournament. He has also served as president of the Rea Park Mens Club, Hulman Links Mens Club and the Terre Haute Golf Association.

While little was known about posttraumatic stress at the time, Dr. Fournier argues that it became a major factor in the life of this Golden Lady. Trauma and the Golden Lady shows what it is like for a person to struggle every day to keep their demons at bay and stay sane, while living with severe mental health problems. Over and over, Sylvia worked to perfect herself and avoid falling into a bottomless hole of nothingness and despair. With passion and a heavy heart, she focused on both these goals until the very end. Ultimately, Sylvia Plath’s personality development and life struggles, along with the effects of the trauma events she experienced, contributed to a suicidal movement that led to her death. While Sylvia’s demise left a wake that affected the lives of many, helping some and hurting others, she was truly a woman to be known and remembered.
