The era depicts the financial and military transformation of the United States into one of the world’s powers, and also discusses the beginning of military adventures into foreign lands, especially the Far East.

The Christian state church emerged from the religion of pagan Rome. A declining western empire gave the church political power, but provoked conflict between church and state. In the Scottish post-Reformation Stewart monarchy, the king claimed to control the church by divine right. Covenanters exchanged state control for a theocracy built on the idea that Scotland, like Israel, had a God-given destiny. As "the purest kirk in Christendom," nation and kirk were the political and religious faces of one body. Like pre-Christian Israel, Scotland was one of the only two nations ever covenanted to the Lord. This idea owed more to political pressure than theological insight. Today, a mindset survives which still refuses to separate kirk from nation and thereby undermines the missionary calling. The urgent need is to recognize that God made a covenant with Israel alone, and to think in terms of "a second Israel" was to misunderstand the development of church history. Today's Kirk must see herself not as "the representative of the Christian faith of the Scottish people . . . to bring the ordinances of religion to the people in every parish of Scotland," but as the representative of Christ with an apostolic mandate for evangelism.

Steeley is befriended by a livery stable owner, who aided him with a job, and home in the stable. Robert James Walker, pseudonym is Steeley. This name given by a drunk cowboy from The Stealer. He was forced killing two men protecting himself with a stolen pistol. The townfolks forced Steeley from their town, not wanting him attracting other gunfighters. Steeley escaped poverty,and death, followed by a stint in the confederate army. Arriving in North Carolina Steeley killed one of three brothers, protecting two sisters. Steeley had to escape these two vengeful brothers, and their family, who continued stalking Steeley. Steeley travelled on an old horse, through parts of North Carolina, in his efforts escaping these brothers.

This book is predominately about the Bataan Death March that followed the capitulation and surrender of the Philippine and United States armed forces on 09 April 1942 in Luzon, Philippines. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor in late December 1941, and the subsequent bombing of Clark Air Base, Japanese forces landed in Northern Luzon, and worked their way down to the capital, Manilla. Early in 1942, General Douglas MacArthur ordered all the Allied forces in Luzon to proceed south to the Bataan Peninsula. Both he and General Wainwright and 10,000 allied troops went further south to Corregidor Island. (This left General King in charge of all the allied troops in the Bataan Peninsula). Throughout January, February, and March 1942, the Philippine and U.S. troops underwent extreme hardship and, although asking General MacArthur for permission to surrender, which was refused, General King, on 09 April 1942 surrendered to the Japanese. This then triggered the beginning of the Bataan Death March—a 70 kilometre forced march to San Fernando, a train trip of 2-3 hours, and finally another 13 kilometre walk to the O’Donnell P.O.W. Camp in Capas. What followed was the death of thousands of prisoners of war both on the Bataan Death March and in the years following, until the Japanese surrendered in September 1945. The book will provide a valuable resource for students and researchers of modern history; particularly the Second World War, and the War in the Pacific,1941-1945.
