Set against the turmoil of the Great War and born out of a ruse to rid the league of reviled Toronto owner Eddie Livingstone, the new league suffered from a series of crises: from a shortfall of quality players due to military conscription, to rival leagues and divided fan loyalties, to the burning down of the Montreal Arena that was home ice to two teams. But despite all this, the league survived—and became the worldwide standard for competitive hockey. What features or information can we observe from a face, and how can these information help us to understand the person concerned, in terms of their well-being and what can we learn about and from each given feature? This book answers these questions by first dividing a face's multiple characteristics into two main categories: original (or physiological) features and features that change over a lifetime. The first category, original features, may be further divided into two sub-classes: features special (or unique) to an individual, and features common to a particular group. The second, changed features, can also be subdivided into two groups: features altered due to disease or features altered by other external factors. From these four sub-categories, four different applications — facial identification using original and special features; beauty analysis using original common features; facial diagnosis by disease changed features; and expression recognition through affect-changed features — are identified. The book will benefit researchers, professionals, and graduate students working in the field of computer vision, pattern recognition, security/clinical practice, and beauty analysis, and will also be useful for interdisciplinary research.
For most of us, the desire to travel and see the world is a natural aspiration and for those of us who can, it is an amazing experience. In the early stages of our marriage, my wife and I enjoyed several holidays with family and friends in Europe. It was when the spectre of cancer affected us both that we became more ambitious, more adventurous and determined to see as much of the world as possible whilst we still had time. For the past twenty-plus years or so, we have done just that. We have camped, cruised around the world, yachted, been on road trips, coached, skied, fly-driven and owned a house in Florida for eleven years. This is an account of our experiences full of facts and details, some funny and some serious, with dangerous encounters and amusing and irritating experiences when letting out our house in Florida. We have seen the iconic buildings of the great civilizations, the world’s great waterfalls, spent time with the Borneo headhunters, canoed part of the Amazon, encountered polar bears, a leopard carrying her cub, armed escort in Yemen, intrigue in China and interviewed Debbie Reynolds in Las Vegas. Furthermore, we’ve experienced being trapped by a hurricane in Florida, Olympic Games in Australia, death on a plane, suicide on a ship, terrifying gang fight in Kuala Lumpur, car crash in Florida, five road trips around America and much more!
