Unfortunately, most writers have given a literal interpretation to these imageries, causing much confusion. Instead of making the book more understandable, for multitudes of people writers have made the book more frightening. John Coulter Sage was born on a horse ranch in southeastern Arizona in 1851. His father was an ex-mountain man and Army scout who built and operated the ranch with a Mexican partner. His mother was a Chiricahua Apache. Sage was raised in all three cultures. Sage went to sea when he was sixteen, and was shipwrecked off Okinawa, where a Buddhist monk befriended him. String band music is most commonly associated with the mountains of North Carolina and other rural areas of the Blue Ridge and Appalachian mountains, but it was just as abundant in Piedmont region of North Carolina, albeit with different influences and stylistic conventions. This work focuses exclusively on the history and culture of the area, the music's development and the changes within traditional communities of the Piedmont.
