About the Book In the first nine chapters of Proverbs—Solomon’s letter to his son who will be king someday—Solomon provides an astounding amount of wisdom. If the son will listen to, accept, and claim this wisdom for his own, he will be a wonderful king and enjoy the fruits of kingship. The question is, will he? Business and Personal Wisdom: A Wise King’s Advice takes the wisdom Solomon gave and translates it into wisdom for us today using historical references and anecdotes from author Bob Biles’ career and personal life. In multiple ways, today’s world is not much different than the world of Solomon’s time. Like then, many today are shouting their ideas, thoughts, counsel, and advice on how the world should be and how others should act. In his day, Solomon found a good deal of it was simple, foolish, deceitful, or evil. Solomon would have the same option of much of today’s talk and speeches. Rather than listen to that chattering, Solomon’s sincere hope is you will hear Wisdom’s entreaties and the true wisdom in Solomon’s words and become wise. It is Bob’s hope that the business and personal applications he has drawn from Solomon’s letter to his son will change your life. About the Author After working in the CPA world for three years, Bob spent the next forty years serving as the finance director or CFO for six cities and a transit agency. Besides experiencing multiple government and management styles, having lived in six of the states west of the Mississippi River, Bob has firsthand experience of regional cultural differences and a wide range of personalities. Bob and his wife of forty-six years have three children and five grandchildren. They spend two days a week with the grandchildren (and their parents) and the whole family gathers on a regular basis. Bob and his wife attend New Hope First Baptist Church in Cedar Park, Texas, and are active participants in several activities, including a wonderful Sunday School class. Bob has been to all fifty states in the U.S. and most of the Canadian provinces. Although there have been some special places to which Bob wants to return, those will have to wait until he gets through the list of destinations yet unseen.

A new book from the authors of the highly praised Transforming Leaders into Progress Makers, Leading with Care breaks new ground in the exploration of servant leadership. Bob DeKoch and Phil Clampitt, long-time collaborators, draw on their years of innovative practice and research to describe with vivid, real-world experiences, how leading with care enriches people and transforms organizations in our challenging times. DeKoch, with over 40 years of diverse executive leadership experience, which included 20 years leading The Boldt Company, a $1 billion construction services and real estate development company, has developed novel insights into leadership thinking and practice. Clampitt, an endowed, award-winning communication and information science professor at University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, has over 40 years of experience in university teaching, ground-breaking research, and business consulting. His lifelong passion is to explore the dynamic relationship between leadership, communication, and big ideas. Gallup recently reported that only 15% of employees in the United States are truly engaged in their workplace. Yet nearly 70% of employees say they would work harder if they felt more appreciated. Over 90% of employees surveyed believed their leadership “lacked communication skills to lead.” The gloomy stories behind sobering statistics reveal employees’ disappointment with current leadership approaches. Leaders can do better. That’s why the authors sought to go beyond the laudable sentiments of the “servant leadership” movement by envisioning, creating, and testing a new leadership platform based on a set of guiding beliefs and actual day-to-day practices. The authors’ unique perspective transforms traditional practices, like employee coaching and collaboration, into dynamic self-actualizing workplaces. How? By sharing how caring leaders adroitly blend visible and subtle practices to realize the aspirational benefits of coaching and collaboration. The authors use a similar approach to share insights about less frequently discussed leadership issues such as how to build an empowering network of relationships and transform pushback into progress. Anyone who wishes to craft their own distinctive, compelling, and empowering leadership style that unleashes the latent energy of people and their organizations will discover a robust and enriching framework for doing so in Leading with Care in a Tough World. “This book offers a simple yet powerful promise: caring leaders can produce extraordinary outcomes. With extensive research and sparkling details, DeKoch and Clampitt reveal how leaders at all levels can enlist our basic humanity to bring out the best in their teams.” --Daniel H. Pink, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Power of Regret, When, and Drive “Leading with Care in a Tough World is a masterful book!!! It is pragmatic, thought-provoking, and exceptionally well-written. Effective leadership today requires you to grapple with a broad range of variables. DeKoch and Clampitt provide a framework, reinforced with real-world examples and self-assessment tools, that will help you turn ideas into effective action. If you’re a leader, or aspiring to become one, I strongly recommend this book.”--Frank Sonnenberg, Award-winning author of nine books, including Managing with a Conscience and The Path to a Meaningful Life "Unlock the keys to successful leadership in Leading with Care in a Tough World. Filled with inspiring stories, practical advice and years of tried-and-true methods, DeKoch and Clampitt will teach you how to be the leader of the future. An excellent read!"--Dr. Marshall Goldsmith is the Thinkers50 #1 Executive Coach and New York Times bestselling author of Triggers, Mojo, and What Got You Here Won’t Get You There. "How can we lead others - and ourselves - in an uncertain and fast-changing world? This humane, thoughtful, and practical new book shows the way." --Dorie Clark, Wall Street Journal bestselling author of The Long Game and executive education faculty, Duke University Fuqua School of Business “Brilliant insight into the realities of leadership. DeKoch and Clampitt expose the manipulations that pass for emotional intelligence and the toxicity of fake positivity. Grounded in the difficult truths of human relationships, this excellent book illuminates the values and beliefs that guide a leader to success.” --Robert McKee, Fulbright Scholar and Globally Renowned Screen Writing Lecturer, Coach and Best Selling Author “An island of innovative insight amid an ocean of leadership BS.” --Professor James Barker, Herbert S. Lamb Chair in Business education, Dalhousie University

Dishonesty does not pay, and in the wake of headlines involving the likes of Enron, WorldCom and Tyco, organizations need to establish ways of maintaining cultures where open, honest communication is the norm. This handbook demonstrates how readers can maintain an environment in which employees speak their mind without fearing reprisal, and truthfulness and accountability show themselves for what they are: business assets. The authors offer a toolbox of strategies that can be used to improve an organization's ability to confront and resolve difficult issues. Provocative and sensitive issues are also addressed, including dealing with a difficult or even dishonest boss, "agreeing to disagree", and accepting criticism without becoming defensive. Many examples, both positive and negative, are given, along with scenarios, anecdotes and quotations.
“One of the most acute books about management and how companies work in practice that I have read in a long time. If anyone wants to know exactly how the U.S. auto industry got into trouble, here is your guide.” —John Gapper, FINANCIAL TIMES When Bob Lutz got into the auto business in the early 1960s, CEOs knew that if you captured the public’s imagination with innovative car design and top-quality craftsmanship, the money would follow. The “car guys” held sway, and GM dominated with bold, creative leadership and iconic brands like Cadillac, Buick, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, GMC, and Chevrolet. But then GM’s leadership began to put its faith in numbers and spreadsheets. Determined to eliminate the “waste” and “personality worship” of the bygone creative leaders, management got too smart for its own good. With the bean counters firmly in charge, carmakers, and much of American industry, lost their single-minded focus on product excellence and their competitive advantage. Decline soon followed. In 2001, General Motors hired Lutz out of retirement with a mandate to save the company by making great cars again. As vice chairman, he launched a war against the penny-pinching number crunchers who ran the company by the bottom line and reinstated a focus on creativity, design, and cars and trucks that would satisfy GM’s customers. Lutz’s commonsense lessons, combined with a generous helping of fascinating anecdotes, will inspire readers in any industry.
During the "Must See TV" 1990s, Americans enjoyed such immensely popular sitcoms as Friends, Seinfeld, Home Improvement and The Drew Carey Show. Shows that did not make the ratings cut numbered in the hundreds--the emergence of new networks and cable channels airing original programming resulted in a vast increase in short-lived sitcoms over the previous decade. Some of these "flops" were actually quite good and deserved a better fate. The author revisits them--along with the "dramedies" of the day--with detailed entries providing production and broadcast information, along with critical analyses, and recollections by cast and crew members. A subsection highlights sitcoms that returned for an abbreviated second season. Dozens of cast and crew photographs are included.
An elegant, intricate mystery, which is seldom what it seems to be. During the 1960's, the young Humboldt S. Prior, nominally a computer specialist, but actually an involuntary agent of a little-known US intelligence service, is projected into Latin America to contact a long-concealed war criminal, who is a needed expert on neurological warfare. There Prior becomes entangled in a web of vengeance, treachery, and repeated murders. Fearful enemies and weapons, each more deadly then the last, menace Prior as he strives to accomplish his mission and live to tell of it. North and South Americans, Nazis, Israelis, and German aristocrats surround Prior in deceit and savage conflict. To survive and succeed he must select from the best of these competing forces, and align himself with them, and in doing so find success and the potential of great happiness and a new future. The story ends with a final jolt of uncertainty and mystery.
What if race relations in the United States got so bad that the nation decided to try a radical idea: separation? The events that propel the country to such an extreme are riots, disturbances in the armed forces and on college campuses, and finally the assassination of a prominent black presidential candidate. In this book a nation-wide referendum approves the idea. Three states are set aside for blacks only, seven just for whites and the other 40 remain integrated. The story follows Mike, a white policeman, to all-white Miami; black college professor Ben and his family to all-black Chicago; and young militant Sherman also to Chicago. The brave new world that each was expecting proves elusive, for both external and internal reasons. This is a story about ambition, love, hate, violence, and betrayal. Marriages will be sorely tried, children will rebel against their parents, careers will take abrupt and surprising turns. All the manifestations of upheaval will be explored against a background of racial misunderstanding. Woven into the story is a study of the background of racial conflict dating back to slavery and segregation. Would such a solution to our racial troubles work?
Relive the most memorable and sensational events in Cleveland sports history. Many of them are known by shorthand: Red Right 88. The Drive. The Fumble. The Shot. Beer Night. Some were gut-wrenching. Some, like the 1964 NFL championship game, were glorious. All are highlight of the shared experience of all Cleveland sports fans.
Here’s Akron, with attitude. A giant cockroach, ticket-happy traffic cops, sexting teens, bumbling politicians, prima donna sports stars . . . There are few topics that Akron Beacon Journal columnist Bob Dyer hasn’t tackled head-on. His biting commentary has earned him followers and foes alike—along with a boatload of awards. In this collection of his best writing, Dyer nearly crashes the Goodyear blimp, drag races in a ’64 Plymouth Barracuda, drives a 126-ton locomotive, panhandles on a downtown street corner, surveys the “Great Wall of Fairlawn,” dispenses unsolicited advice to LeBron James, and generally waves a red flag at political correctness. Great fun to read—as long as you’re not overly sensitive!

Gordon could not take his eyes off her as she neared. 'Hello, Harry, how are you?' Ruby said, smiling prettily as she passed. 'Just fine, Ruby, nice to see you.' 'Nice to see you, too, Harry.' 'Sure you would. Wouldn't every stud in town? Adam Baldwin, in the middle of his seventh term as a United States Senator, is at the pinnacle of his career. And he is the front-runner for his party's nomination for President at the looming Democratic National Convention. But a dark cloud hangs over his head. There is a seemingly far-fetched accusation that the candidate murdered a young woman decades before when in college. This is scoffed at by the local police, but when a suspicious explosion kills the accuser's family, the curiosity of the retired Memphis Chief of Police, Joe O'Riley, a high school classmate of Baldwin's, is aroused.O'Riley senses truth in the allegations, especially after a woman reports knowledge of the same murder. Yet, how could the man who made the accusation and this woman know such vivid details of the murder when neither was alive at the time it happened? And how could they know details of O'Riley's past known only to himself? Might all this be a link to an unsolved missing person case, O'Riley's first as a rookie cop, that had haunted him his whole career?Death and destruction stalk the couple as O'Riley jumps into the fray, determined to find out the truth before the country elects a murderer as the next President of the United States.

The second son of a hard-as-nails Texas rancher is drafted out of college for the Vietnam war. Assigned to the Pentagon, he observes the great March on Washington protesting the war and questions why his peers are marching outside and he’s inside the walls of the citadel. After his discharge, he enrolls at the University of Connecticut where he hopes to catch up with his generation. There, he meets and falls in love with a beautiful Woodstock flowerchild, a beguiling, free-loving, Tinker Bell in blue jeans, who guides him through the new mores that sorely test the values he was taught growing up. After she breaks his heart, he seeks solace by returning home, and like the prodigal son, his family welcomes him and “kills the fatted calf.” It’s good to be home, but like the rest of the country during that time—he is forever changed. “There is definitely one, if not a couple of movies in this novel. It’s not only the story of these characters in the sixties, but is also the story of the country.” —The late Myron (Mike) Weinblatt, President of NBC Entertainment and Showtime/The Movie Channel “It was the best of times. It was the worst of times. It was the Sixties, and Jim Davis faces a world at odds with the one in which he grew up. Bob Holt captures the essence of the decade with his impressive debut novel that is bawdy and tender and wise as a young man reconciles his past with his future.” —Mary Bryan Stafford, author of A Wasp in the Fig Tree and The Last Whippoorwill “Bob Holt offers a compelling story of Jim Davis who grows up under the controlling power of his father, a Bible-thumping Texas rancher. Holt’s vivid account sets the stage for Jim’s stint as a rising army lieutenant before he turns away searching for his own independence. He lands in a liberal eastern college where the counter culture opens him to a new world of experiences and a love that almost destroys him. Holt’s imagery immerses his reader in Jim Davis’ search for himself and his fight to capture his love.” —Myra Hargrave McIlvain, Award-winning author of Stein House and The Doctor’s Wife

Hired by ForbesTraveler.com to review some of the most luxurious accommodations on Earth, and then inspired by a chance encounter in Dubai with the impoverished workers whose backbreaking jobs create such opulence, Bob Harris had an epiphany: He would turn his own good fortune into an effort to make lives like theirs better. Bob found his way to Kiva.org, the leading portal through which individuals make microloans all over the world: for as little as $25-50, businesses are financed and people are uplifted. Astonishingly, the repayment rate was nearly 99%, so he re-loaned the money to others over and over again. ?After making hundreds of microloans online, Bob wanted to see the results first-hand, and in The International Bank of Bob he travels from Peru and Bosnia to Rwanda and Cambodia, introducing us to some of the most inspiring and enterprising people we've ever met, while illuminating day-to-day life-political and emotional-in much of the world that Americans never see. Told with humor and compassion, The International Bank of Bob brings the world to our doorstep, and makes clear that each of us can, actually, make it better.
The roots of an insidious Religious Humanism have for some time now steadily been growing deeper and deeper and taking a firm hold in the modern Christian Church in America and across the world. The lethality of this rooting is that Religious Humanism is filled with false teachings which are historically known as heresies.

At the core of Kotex, Kleenex, Huggies is the riveting story of Kimberly-Clark, a Wisconsin paper company that became a pioneer of personal hygiene products in the twentieth century. Its first big commercial success was Kotex, which came from sanitary wound bandages developed in World War I. Similarly, Kleenex evolved from Army gas mask filters into disposable handkerchiefs and became the company's most reliable profit maker. Finally, Huggies turned Kimberly-Clark into a leading player in the highly competitive diaper market of the 1970s and 1980s. In addition to tracing Kimberly-Clark's fascinating history of technology development and product diversification, Heinrich and Batchelor explore momentous changes in consumer behavior and marketing. When Kotex first arrived on the scene in the 1920s, menstrual hygiene was burdened with cultural taboos that made it impossible for many women to ask the (inevitably male) pharmacist for a sanitary napkin. To solve such vexing marketing problems, Kimberly-Clark invented the artificial word Kotex and inserted it into consumer vocabulary through massive advertising campaigns. Making it easier for women to shop for the new product. Kimberly-Clark also recommended that stores place boxes of Kotex on the counter where women could help themselves without embarrassing conversation, thus pioneering the concept of self-service.

Desperate to save the club from collapse, he needed Babe Ruth--not the fading slugger but the most famous brand on the planet. This book chronicles the Ruth and Fuchs partnership during a perplexing 1935 season with the 38-115 Braves--truly one of the worst baseball teams in history--along with Ruth's final games, back in the city where he debuted.
