The English Language Word Builder organizes English words in a way that is beneficial to anyone wishing to improve their vocabulary, from those learning the English language through to those wishing to excel at word games such as Scrabble. The book contains the basic form of some 82,500 words from two to nine letters in length, and is organized in chapters depending on the word length. Within each chapter, words are designated as either familiar or less familiar, with the familiar words deemed to be those of most use when communicating in English. With the exception of less familiar nine-letter words, each word is assigned a part of speech which is evident from formatting applied. For example, underlining indicates verbs while bold type indicates adjectives and other words that cannot be pluralized. Symbols are used to indicate additional forms of each basic word, with a special symbol being used to designate irregular verbs. Within sections of familiar words in each chapter, words are grouped in accordance with their part of speech. Within sections of less familiar words, words are grouped firstly into those which are built from shorter words, and then into all other words with various groupings depending on the word length. Available single letter extensions of basic words are shown by a lower case letter at the end of each capitalized main word. This enables users of the book to build on their existing vocabulary to make new words, either for use in word games or in communicating in English.

Such sites provide memorable experiences that last a lifetime.. Hiking that same mountain chain provides another perspective to the mountains. This nation embodies a near-perfect set of rules and guidelines devised by men that we call our founding fathers and embodied in a document we call a constitution. Our constitution, too, creates a sense of awe. Today, watching the daily machinations of politics; the, the process of voting, campaigning, maneuvering, the political intrigue and the oversized egos of so many of our politicians throughout the nation makes us wonder. Politics, too, has its craggy paths and steep cliffs that so many of us disdain. It, too has its precarious nature.. At no time since the civil war has the fractured nature of the nation been more obvious than in the current political scene. Democracy is under attack, in danger of being replaced by an autocratic form of government. The author of this book has lived through the presidency of 15 chief executives—that’s 84 years of presidency. Born in the mid-west into a Republican family of long-standing, McGill spent his early years cementing that early belief through family conversations and school classes listening to history and civic teachers. He developed the engrained belief that, somehow, the Republicans best served the needs of the American people. It was sometime during his college years that the author began the long shift from Republican to Democrat. McGill shares that transition even as he warns about the current political dangers threatening the future of the nation. There is an urgency to the book—a concern for the future the children of today. A recurring question in the book asks about the world the children and grandchild will inherit.

Sparta was a small city which consistently punched above its weight in the affairs of classical Greece, happily meddling in the affairs of the other cities. For two centuries her warriors were acknowledged as second to none. Yet at only one period in its long history, in the late fourth and early third century BC, did the home of these grim warriors seem set to entrench itself as the dominant power in the Greek world. This period includes the latter stages of the Peloponnesian War from 412 BC to the Spartan victory in 402, and then down to the Spartan defeat by the Thebans at Leuctra in 371 BC, where it all began to unravel for the Spartan Empirern Surprisingly few previous books have covered the tumultuous first decades of the fourth century BC, particularly when compared to the ample coverage of the Peloponnesian War. As the authors explain, although the earlier period has the benefit of Thucydides' magisterial history, the period covered here is actually well served by sources and well worthy of study. There are many interesting characters here, including Alcibiades, Lysander, Agesilaus, Pelopidas and Epaminondas, to name but a few. In addition there are several campaigns and battles that are reported in enough detail to make them interesting and comprehensible to the reader. Bob Bennett and Mike Roberts untangle the complexities of this important but unduly neglected period for the modern reader.

This book recounts and analyzes the complex series of conflicts between the Hellenistic Successor states in the generation before the Romans intervened in, and ultimately conquered, the region. This period is rarely treated in any depth, usually warranting little more than a summary as context for a discussion of the Roman conquests. The authors demonstrate that this period of almost-constant conflict and rivalry makes a fascinating subject of study in its own right. For example, it describes Macedon's war with Cleomenes and the final crushing of a much-diminished Sparta as an independent power; also the campaigns in the east whereby the Seleucid king, Antiochus (later defeated by the Romans at Magnesia) earned his title of Antiochus the Great. They show how the Hellenistic monarchs, while aware of Rome's epic clash with Carthage in the West, did not yet see her as a major threat and were preoccupied with more immediate concerns. As well as clearly narrating the complex events, Roberts and Bennet assess the various military systems of the Hellenistic states and developments in warfare on land and sea. This is a very original book on a neglected period of politico-military history.

In 1824, Hervey Bliss, who according to Duane DeLoach's Blissfield's First 150 Years stood "about five feet, three inches tall, with a somewhat florid complexion and . . . blue eyes," left Monroe County, blazed a trail 20 miles through the woods, built a log cabin, and founded the village of Blissfield on the west bank of the River Raisin. In 1826, George Giles, a neighbor of Bliss in Monroe County, moved onto land on the east side of the river in a place he called Lyons. Before the river was bridged, Blissfield consisted of two separate communities, each with its own schools and downtown areas; the village retains some of that split personality. Triple bridges, once nationally famous, remain the proud symbol of Blissfield, joining what the River Raisin keeps separate and what, as floodwaters insist, the river can still force apart.
