There are continuing difficulties within social science surrounding concepts of race. This book suggests that these difficulties stem from the uncertain ontological and epistemological status of ideas about race, itself a consequence of the recognition that concepts of race have all but lost their relevance as sociologically significant descriptions. This book surveys ways in which social scientists have attempted to come to terms with this situation, before developing an alternative approach based on recent work by realist authors. This approach offers a radical revision of orthodox debates about race concepts, about the possibility of a social science and about the nature of empirical research. This illustrated through two policy examples: an account of post war migration to the UK, and debates about trans-racial adoption in the UK and the USA.
Face it. Climate change has happened. It’s no longer a future threat. We’re living with it today. Let’s just accept that and move forward. We have to survive an expanding range of weather extremes, an ever growing list of natural disasters, a steady drip of pandemic-prone viruses, and the economic impacts of skyrocketing energy and food costs. The environment is filled with new challenges but we can survive; even prosper. Climate is a big issue and it’s easy to get lost in all the jargon and abbreviations. Where do you even begin to address something this complex? Even if we don’t let it overwhelm us emotionally, it’s far too easy to spend all our time and money digging out of the last disaster instead of preparing for the next. There are clear, easy steps we can take to prepare for climate change; both the climate change that’s already here and the climate changes coming down the road. The first step is to break this big, complex problem down into manageable sections; each with a group of small, clear actions that are easily taken and, together, help us secure our health and safety, save money, and position us for a safe and prosperous future. The old adage, caveat emptor (buyers beware), applies to climate change as much as it does to used cars, and it’s our responsibility to beware of green-washing and to make personal choices that assure the health, safety and welfare of ourselves, our communities, our children and future generations. This Field Guide will help.

Grub Street was a real place, a place of poverty and vice. It was also a metaphor for journalists and other writers of ephemeral publications and, by implication, the infant newspaper industry. During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, journalists were held in low regard, even by their fellow journalists who exchanged torrents of mutual abuse in the pages of their newspapers. But Grub Street's vitality and its battles with authority laid the foundations of modern Fleet Street. In this book, Bob Clarke examines the origination and development of the English newspaper from its early origin in the broadsides of the sixteenth century, through the burgeoning of the press during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, to its arrival as a respectable part of the establishment in the nineteenth century. Along the way this narrative is illuminated with stories of the characters who contributed to the growth of the English press in all its rich variety of forms, and how newspapers tailored their contents to particular audiences. As well as providing a detailed chronological history, the volume focuses on specific themes important to the development of the English newspaper. These include such issues as state censorship and struggles for the freedom of the press, the growth of advertising and its effect on editorial policy, the impact on editorial strategies of taxation policy, increased literacy rates and social changes, the rise of provincial newspapers and the birth of the Sunday paper and the popular press. The book also describes the content of newspapers, and includes numerous extracts and illustrations that vividly portray the way in which news was reported to provide a colourful picture of the social history of their times. Written in a lively and engaging manner, this volume will prove invaluable to anyone with an interest in English social history, print culture or journalism.

These volumes provide an essential comprehensive work of reference for the annual municipal elections that took place each November in the 83 County Boroughs of England and Wales between 1919 and 1938. They also provide an extensive and detailed analysis of municipal politics in the same period, both in terms of the individual boroughs and of aggregate patterns of political behaviour. Being annual, these local election results give the clearest and most authoritative record of how political opinion changed between general elections, especially useful for research into the longer gaps such as 1924-29 and 1935-45, or crisis periods such as 1929-31. They also illuminate the impact of fringe parties such as the Communist Party and the British Union of Fascists, and also such questions as the role of women in politics, the significance of religious and ethnic differentiation and the connection between occupational and class divisions and party allegiance. Analysis at the ward level is particularly useful for socio-spatial studies. A major work of reference, County Borough Elections in England and Wales, 1919-1938 is indispensable for university libraries and local and national record offices. Each volume has approximately 700 pages.
When Jesus came, he revolutionized religion on our planet. He revealed a higher vision of God and a deeper understanding of the requirements and rewards for entering the kingdom of heaven. But, that vision has been ignored, distorted, or denied both by believers and nonbelievers alike. In The Liberal Leanings of the Liberating Lamb, author Bob Fronterhouse discusses that Christianity, as taught and practiced today, is too small to fulfill the word and will of Jesus. Fronterhouse calls attention to the neglected teachings of Jesus, and he shows that without action, the words are meaningless. He points out the mistake of today's focus on theological ideas instead of following Jesus' examples and teachings in everyday life. When one acts according to Jesus' example, religion moves in the right direction of discipleship and the world, in turn, becomes a better place.
While the sabermetrics revolution in baseball is now fully institutionalized, other sports have embraced data analysis more slowly-especially American football. Yet thirty-five years ago, Bob Carroll, John Thorn, and Pete Palmer were laying the groundwork for the transformation of the sport when they wrote The Hidden Game of Football. Readers in 1988 found this book to be staggering, with myths and misconceptions 'left strewn in the wake of their analysis like the Columbia University secondary after a running play' (Allen Barra). Today, with statistical analysis becoming more widely accepted across the NFL, the book seems prescient and influential--as Aaron Schatz notes in his new foreword"--

Originally settled prior to the coming of the Florida East Coast Railway in 1904, Homestead became only the second incorporated municipality in Dade County in 1913. A land of rich soil steeped in agricultural heritage, the area soon grew into a marvelously diverse city of more than sixty thousand residents. The foundation laid by the railroad gave way to the aviation industry when the city became home to Homestead Air Force Base, now Homestead Air Reserve Base. The city has also dealt with adversity, rebuilding itself from the devastation of Hurricane Andrew in 1992. Homestead is now the gateway to two national parks and is home to Homestead-Miami Speedway, a unique winery and a thriving business community. Join authors Seth H. Bramson and Bob Jensen as they detail the rich history of this South Florida gem.

GOOD GENES, LUCK, A LOT OF PRAYERS by Bob Kascht, is a memoir of an ordinary life, written in a flowing style, which elevates the little things and the common people to a higher level where the mlange of memories evokes more reflections on life in the mind of the reader. "These memories were registered in detail, on a fine grain emulsion, and with full flavor. Thankfully, the retrieval is printed in gentle sepia, softening some of the glare and pain. I am now in a quiet time, a holding pattern, awaiting the landing.I hope our children can gain increased appreciation of our earnest efforts, and our love for them. As a side benefit, I should like those who follow to realize that we were more than just faded photographs, alive and "full of beans." It would be the ideal reward if they wish they had known us." Happily, every reader will know the people who step from these pages.
Bob Jessop presents an up-to-date account of his distinctive approach to the dialectics of structure and strategy in the exercise of state power. While his earlier work critically surveys other state theories, this book focuses on the development of his own strategic-relational approach. It introduces its main sources, outlines its development, applies this approach to four case studies, and sketches a strategic-relational research agenda. Thus the book presents a comprehensive theoretical statement of the approach and guidelines for its application. Key features of the book include: an account of the authors theoretical development; a review of recent developments in state theory and the cultural turn in political economy; critical strategic-relational re-readings of major state theorists Marx on political representation, Gramsci on the spatiality of state power, Poulantzas on the state as a social relation, and the later Foucault on statecraft; applications of the strategic-relational approach to important issues concerning the contemporary state: its gendered selectivity, the future of the national state, the states temporal sovereignty, and the relevance of multi-scalar meta-governance in Europe for the more general future of the state. The book concludes with recommendations for future strategic-relational research in political economy and state theory.
