This book demonstrates how, through cross-tradition engagement, insights and engaging treatments from the Chinese philosophical tradition can work with relevant resources from modern logic and contemporary philosophy to enhance our understanding of two basic principles of logic: the law of identity and the law of non-contradiction. The law of identity and the law of non-contradiction are widely accepted principles in logic and other intellectual pursuits. However, there are disagreements as to how to understand and treat the genuine structures and contents of these two basic principles. This book provides a holistic inquiry into these principles for the sake of enhancing our understanding and treatment of them from the vantage point of cross-tradition engagement. It begins by offering a philosophical interpretation of three classical texts in Chinese philosophy in their respective contexts: the “Bai-Ma-Lun” in Gongsun Long’s texts, the “Xiao-Qu” in the Later Mohist texts, and Lao Zi’s Dao-De-Jing in classical Daoism. The author explains an innovative dual-track characterization of relative identity that is informed by relevant resources from these texts as well as Western philosophical traditions. He shows how this cross-tradition engaging approach can make constructive and significant contributions to the jointly concerned fundamental issues of identity and reference in logic, philosophy of logic and language, metaphysics, as well as philosophy more generally. The consecutive tenses are fundamental in all descriptions of Classical Hebrew grammar. They are even basic to the textbooks on Biblical Hebrew. Being fundamental in the verbal system, and part of any beginner’s grammar, they pose a serious problem to a linguistic understanding of the verbal system, since grammars describe an alternation of ‘forms’ or ‘tenses’ in double pairs: wayyiqṭol alternates with its ‘equivalent’ qaṭal, and wə-qaṭal alternates with its ‘equivalent’ yiqṭol. This ‘enigma’ in the verbal system is handled in the book by recognising that the alternation of the consecutive tenses with other tenses, in the reality of the text, represents a linking of clauses. The ‘consecutive tenses’ are clause-types with a natural language connective wa- directly followed by a finite verbal morpheme, a type of clause that expressed continuity in the earliest stage of Semitic. The commonly held assumption that there is a special ‘consecutive waw’ is unwarranted. The use of the ‘consecutive’ clause-types in order to express discourse continuity indicates that Classical Hebrew has retained the old unmarked declarative word order of Semitic syntax. Seen in the light of recent research on the Tiberian reading tradition, the ‘consecutive’ wayyiqṭol can be analysed as a retention of the old Semitic past perfective *wa-yaqtul, which was pronounced wa-yiqṭol in Classical Hebrew. The ‘consecutive’ wə-qāṭal (pronounced wa-qaṭal in the classical language) constitutes the result of an internal Hebrew development into a construction (in the sense of Joan Bybee) already foreshadowed in the earliest Northwest Semitic languages. The book understands the ‘consecutive tenses’ as discourse continuity clauses, which typically form chains of main line clauses. Such chains can be interrupted by other types of clauses. This interruption is a clause linking that receives special attention in the interpretation of the Classical Hebrew verbal system. Chapter six presents a regenerated text linguistics founded on the new terminology. A clause linking approach is the central methodological procedure in this book. To this must be added diachronic typology in a comparative Semitic setting. The linguistic examples of clause linking are gathered from a large Classical Hebrew corpus, the Pentateuch and the Book of Judges, and made searchable in a database of 6559 non-archaic text records.

It is in these insightful, detailed chapters that the interplay of breeders, handlers, and dogs takes focus and the complex picture of the purebred dog scene is exposed. From studying thousands of show records and breed books and from his five decades' experience in the sport, Bengtson is able to put the sport of dog showing into perspective. Immediately, the new ownership group set out to make impactful company-wide changes. The first change was the elimination of the firm’s “King” mascot in 2011, which was seen as edgy and targeted towards young men in their teens and twenties. The new phase, which began earlier this year, consists of a drastic change in overall brand strategy to reposition BK as a broad and appealing restaurant in the QSR industry. To attract a wider audience, such as women and health-conscious customers, BK has added a significant amount of menu items including smoothies, coffee drinks, and salads. Furthermore, it has set out to remodel around 1,500 restaurants. In place of the previous mascot, BK has enlisted A-list celebrities (i.e., David Beckham and Selma Hayek) to advertise its products. Another strategy that they plan to implement is to sell almost all of its 1,300 corporate stores to franchise stores in an effort to protect itself from commodity-cost swings and fixed costs. With significant competition from both current as well as fast-growing QSRs (i.e., Five Guys Burgers and Fries, Panera Bread, and Chipotle Mexican Grill), BK’s recent moves have been perceived as imitating the leader, McDonald’s, rather than differentiating the company. While it remains to be seen whether or not the strategy is enough to grow the business, a potential concern is whether 3G Capital Management is looking for long-term growth or settling for marginal growth in the short-term to fund their exit from the company by going back to a public entity. The current strategy conveys that BK is in “catch-up” mode instead of trying to distinguish itself as a premier QSR. Considering both internal and external factors, the firm needs to win back and increase its customer base as the way to grow its business. To do this, some recommendations for BK in the short-term are to introduce a happy hour that includes an accommodating menu of new products, offer nutritious kid’s meals that are part of a healthy, balanced diet, and launch an online ordering system for customers to pre-order meals for pick-up. In the longer-term, we suggest BK buy out the highest performing franchises to gain additional streams of revenue, implement an incentive program to reward the best franchise stores, and start a high density delivery service.
