Since the 1920s, scholars have promoted a set of manuscripts, long abandoned by Marx and Engels, to canonical status in book form as The German Ideology, and in particular its 'first chapter,' known as 'I. Feuerbach.' Part one of this revolutionary study relates in detail the political history through which these manuscripts were editorially fabricated into editions and translations, so that they could represent an important exposition of Marx's 'theory of history.' Part two presents a wholly-original view of the so-called 'Feuerbach' manuscripts in a page-by-page English-language rendition of these discontinuous fragments. By including the hitherto devalued corrections that each author made in draft, the new text invites the reader into a unique laboratory for their collaborative work. An 'Analytical Introduction' shows how Marx's and Engels's thinking developed in duologue as they altered individual words and phrases on these 'left-over' polemical pages.

The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan at the end of 1979 was, in many respects, a milestone in Soviet history. On the one hand it represented the high-water mark of Soviet intervention in Third World states and thus served as the archetypical example and justification for the intensification of the cold war in the early 1980s. On the other hand, the ultimate defeat and poor performance by this military in Afghanistan was one of the key forces that triggered the drive for a comprehensive reform of the entire Soviet national security system and its decision-making structures. Thus this war had profound domestic and foreign repercussions. This analysis focuses on the purely operational and strategic lessons of the war. It insists that lessons of these kinds were present and that they offer significant insights both for such wars in general and for the course of Soviet military developments in the 1980s and 1990s. These lessons also offer important clues concerning the reforms required in order to preserve democratic civilian control over the military. It should also alert analysts everywhere as to the nature of local wars in the Third World in the 1990s, a phenomenon that shows little sign of abating. Though in many ways like all wars, this war was unique; it was not merely a series of random tactical exercises that were ultimately futile. Rather, like all wars, it shows us something of the shape of our present and future, if we are only insightful enough to understand it correctly.

CAMOLA experiments with [U-13C6]-glucose were applied to study the formation of selected roast-smelling odorants, including 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline (2-AP), 2-acetyl-1(or 3),4,5,6-tetrahydropyridine (2-ATHP), 2-propionyl-1-pyrroline (2-PP), and 2-propionyl-1(or 3),4,5,6-tetrahydropyridine (2-PTHP), upon extrusion cooking of a model rice recipe. The results indicate that, under extrusion, the formation of these compounds follows similar pathways to those reported for dry- and wet-heated model systems. 2-AP is principally formed (i) by acylation of 1-pyrroline via C2 sugar fragments (major), and (ii) via ring opening of 1-pyrroline incorporating C3 sugar fragments (minor); 2-PP incorporates C3 sugar fragments, while 2-ATHP and 2-PTHP incorporate C3 and C4 sugar fragments, respectively.

The present study aimed at better understanding the link between the sensory profile of espresso coffees and their molecular aroma and taste composition. Twelve coffee blends were assessed by instrumental analysis and sensory profiling. The results were statistically correlated using a knowledge-based standardization and normalization of both datasets that selectively extracts differences in the quality of samples, while reducing the impact of variations on the overall intensity of coffees. Several of the 42 aroma and 12 taste compounds analyzed for this study exhibited a good correlation with specific sensory descriptors and may be used as chemical markers. In addition, a robust mathematical model could be developed that predicts the sensory profile of espresso coffees from instrumental data. Such model is a very useful tool for future development of coffee blends with tailored flavor profiles. The results represent significant progress in correlating sensory with instrumental data, exemplified on one of the most complex aromas, i.e., coffee.

These, plus several discussions of theory and methodology have been published separately.The authors' working procedure has been to study intensively a relatively small number of groups, relying upon careful observation of natural groups rather than upon laboratory experimentation. The overall effort has been to understand the processes of therapy groups in all their clinical richness and intricacy and yet to impose a scientific discipline and control on our analyses. This has meant a continuing attempt to develop appropriate analytic procedures so that clinical analyses can be as firmly rooted as possible in concrete data and reproducible methods. This book is a unique effort at the scientific grounding of social work practice.

Since its inception as a state, Russia has been both a European and an Asian power. Although Russia today, as was true during much of its history, is torn by an identity crisis over where it belongs, its elites have never renounced Russia's vital interests in Asia and the belief that it should be recognized as a great power there. However, that belief and Moscow's ability to sustain it are now under threat, due, as Dr. Stephen Blank's thorough analysis informs us, to the ongoing failures of Russian policymakers to come to grips with changed Russian and Asian realities. At the same time, this aspect of Russian policy has been neglected in American assessments of Russia. This is a serious shortcoming, because, in Dr. Blank's view, Russia's Asian policies, viewed in their full breadth, are important signs of present and future trends concerning its behavior at home and in the wider world. Those policies are also significant as Asia's importance in world affairs rises. We ignore the threatening situation facing Russia, and Moscow's failure to adjust to those threats, only at our own peril. The growing concern over Russian arms transfers to China, a subject addressed in the study, is only one sign of unexpected negative trends that might work against U.S. interests if we continue to neglect Asian aspects of Russia's global behavior and policy.
