The world's oceans have become critical. Over fishing and over dumping have raised fears that nations must take steps to protect this vast global resource. Tananger, a mature bull gray whale is part of a round up in Scammons Lagoon in Baja California. Because of an extreme shortage of fossil fuels, David Parks, a "fluker", will ride in a pod on the back of the behemoth. The whale/man team head north into storming seas. They soon encounter a pirate trawler. A rogue wave, a luxurious pleasure yacht and a container ship carrying stolen toxic chemicals are drawn to a climactic point. The evil Chang Lee, leaves his Asian headquarters to take charge of an impending disaster. A strange congregation of whales pursues the pirates to Prince William Sound and then to College Fjord, the site of some of the largest glaciers in Alaska. David, Tananger and a group of Inuit fisherman confront the pirates inside the massive Harvard Glacier. The fight in ice caverns is soon brought to a halt by a major seismic disturbance a few miles off the entrance to the Sound and the threat of a tsunami looms large as fears mount of being trapped in the narrow fjord.

The medical record is the single, tangible tool that can be used to accurately access reflect the quality of medical care rendered to patients in a hospital. Judgment of the medical record should be made only by qualified members of the Medical Staff, who serve on its reviewing committees; Medical Record, Medical Audit, and Tissue. In addition, the medical record should serve as a scientific teaching tool in the education of interns and residents, as well as in the continuing education of practicing physicians. To ensure quantitative and qualitative completeness of the medical record, the medical staff of the Barberton Citizens Hospital has set forth, in its Rules and Regulations, policies governing these records. The responsibilities of the attending and house physician are made explicit. The reviewing committees are obliged to insure adherence to these policies. The medical record librarian and her staff, upon receipt of the chart from the floor, “grade” it for clerical deficiencies. Factors, such as the quantity of progress notes, presence or lack of consultation notes, completeness of history or physical examination should not be left to the discretion of the medical record department personnel. Such elements are only to be judged by physicians. However, in instances of obvious deficiency, the medical record librarian should seek the opinion of the chairman of the Medical Record Committee. He should then decide what steps, if any, should be taken. The policies concerning Medical Records in the Rules and Regulations are set before the Medical Staff; they need only be followed to produce good records that are a true picture of the care being rendered. However, it must be re-emphasized that the ultimate responsibility for providing a good medical record rests with the physician of record. Members of the house staff, nursing service, and many other paramedical personnel assist him in the care of his patient; nevertheless, it is he who must authenticate the accurate recording of this care.

Drawing on tourist literature, travelogues, and local-color fiction about the South, Bill Hardwig tracks the ways in which the nation's leading interdisciplinary periodicals, especially the Atlantic Monthly, Harper's, and the Century, translated and broadcast the predominant narratives about the late-nineteenth-century South. In many ways, he attests, the national representation of the South was controlled more firmly by periodical editors working in the Northeast, such as William Dean Howells, Thomas Bailey Aldrich, and Richard Watson Gilder, than by writers living in and writing about the region. Fears about national unity, immigration, industrialization, and racial dynamics in the South could be explored through the safe and displaced realm of a regional literature that was often seen as mere entertainment or as a picturesque depiction of quaint rural life. The author examines in depth the short work of George Washington Cable, Charles Chesnutt, Alice Dunbar-Nelson, Lafcadio Hearn, Mary Noailles Murfree, and Thomas Nelson Page in the context of the larger periodical investment in the South. Arguing that this local-color fiction calls into question some of the lines of demarcation within U.S. and southern literary and cultural studies, especially those offered by identity-based models, Hardwig returns these writers to the dynamic cultural exchanges within local-color fiction from which they initially emerged.

At the height of the space race, he was creating sculptures that explore the gravity, balance and specific properties of a wide variety of materials. The cosmos and water are key elements in the work of Bollinger, who was fascinated by curved space, the vertical and the horizontal, resulting in evanescent, purist, energy-laden works with a radical edge that still have the power to astound us, even today.
