With his brothers, he built up a property empire, including Sydney’s biggest hotel, yet bookmaking remained his passion. By the 1960s he was Australia’s biggest bookie, and he remained at the top for over twenty years. Renowned for never refusing to take a gambler on, Big Bill always attracted the high-stake punters. His gambling duels are legendary: from ‘Filipino Fireball’ Felipe Ysmael and the ‘Hong Kong Tiger’ Frank Duval, to the up-and-coming Kerry Packer. In the 1980s, with son Robbie already a leading bookmaker, the Fine Cotton affair brought ignominy to the Waterhouse name. Although cleared of any wrongdoing, Bill was warned off racetracks for fourteen years. Here he reveals how deeply the affair hurt his family and his reputation. Faced with adversity on all sides, Bill’s empire came under serious threat. He fought back and eventually returned to racing at the age of 80, training his grandson Tom as the fourth generation of the Waterhouse racing dynasty. With Tom, he again rose to be the largest on-track bookmaker in Australia. Away from racing, Bill’s life has been equally eventful. He is the honorary consul-general for the Kingdom of Tonga and, having maintained an active role in helping the island nation for over 35 years, is now the longest-serving diplomat in Australia. This is the story of a naive country boy from Kentucky who spent his career in public accounting. This career spanned about 55 years - from 1957 to 2011. It offers some insights into what happened to an accountant climbing the ladder to the partner's ranks in a large firm in the accounting profession.

This report contains the final directions and recommendations of the Select Committee on the High Speed 2 Phase One Hybrid Bill after 160 days of sittings over nearly two years. Our responsibility was to hear petitions from those specially and directly affected by the Bill and, where we believed it was appropriate, to suggest modifications, assurances, undertakings or mitigation to address petitioners' concerns. The Committee directed a number of amendments to the proposed HS2 Phase One project. Notably they have directed a longer Chilterns bored tunnel, greater noise protection for Wendover, better construction arrangements in Hillingdon, and a remodelled maintenance depot at Washwood Heath to maximise local job opportunities. There should be a coherent approach to the redevelopment of Euston. In many cases not specifically mentioned in this report we have intervened to encourage fairness, practical settlements, the giving of assurances, or better mitigation. The Committee recommended amendments to the operation of the discretionary compensation schemes which they believe will result in greater fairness and a more functional property market in areas near to the proposed line. They also suggest improvements to the procedure for dealing with hybrid bills.

Six squadrons of Spitfires were sent to find and dive-bomb the mobile V2 launch sites scattered throughout the Dutch countryside. The missiles were well camouflaged and often positioned adjacent to dwellings occupied by civilians. The RAF was under orders to cause minimum damage to Dutch property and life, therefore precision bombing became a necessity. This complete account of the campaign includes discussions of the strategy and tactics employed and the equipment used. It also considers the effects on Dutch civilians. Bill Simpson draws on the experiences of sixteen Allied pilots, ground crew and the Dutch who were at the receiving-end of the attacks.

The 1908 Olympic Games were controversial. There was almost constant bickering among the American team and the British officials. Because of the controversies, the 1908 Olympics have been termed "The Battle of Shepherd's Bush," referring to the site of the Olympic Stadium. Reports of the 1908 Olympics have been rare and do not for instance contain full results for archery, track and field athletics, football (soccer), gymnastics, motorboating and shooting. A great deal of new information has been discovered by the authors, and this work gives complete results for all events. The information presented is based primarily on 1908 sources. For the first time, definitive word on the sites, dates, events, competitors, and nations as well as the event results are available for all of the 1908 Olympic events, including boxing, cycling, diving, fencing, field hockey, lacrosse, polo, raquets, swimming, lawn tennis, tug-of-war, weightlifting, wrestling and yachting, among other sports. A series of appendices include rarely seen information about the many controversies surrounding the Games.

From remarkably frank and credible responses to their comprehensive research questionnaire, Tian and Keep provide a unique, wide ranging catalogue of frauds that customers perpetrate on businesses--and what marketers can do to combat it. They were able to receive and analyze more than 250 written descriptions--a 71% response rate!--of the acts that customers committed and the methods they used. Instead of merely a checklist, Tian and Keep obtained their data in the customers' own words, resulting in highly detailed and reliable insights into why customers did what they did. They find that customer fraud has emerged as a form of guerilla warfare against companies, that it is adapted to specific situations, and that underlying customers' motivation is a need to get even. Ethics has little do with it. In fact, some respondents even asserted that they had an obligation to commit fraud: they did it to retaliate against what they perceived as unethical acts that businesses committed against them. The result is a rare documentation of the specifics of fraud, how it threatens not only business but entire economies, and the actions--bold and subtle--that marketers can take in self-protective response. Not only will corporate management, particularly in marketing, get detailed descriptions of their customers' fraud strategies and tactics, but they will also receive insights into where they are vulnerable and why. Tian and Keep show that fraud has become so socially acceptable among middle class customers that they are willing to share their tactics, strategies, and secrets with their friends. With this as their foundation, the authors give practitioners an arsenal of detection and deterrence methods. Equally important, they provide ways to implement them without alienating their other, blameless customers. They also show marketers what they can do to reestablish trust in their marketing exchanges with customers, and improve relationships in ways that will diminish (if not fully eliminate) the incidence of fraud. For management generally as well as marketers in companies of all sizes and type, Tian's and Keep's book is essential, engrossing, and useful reading.
