The Thousand Islands' very name conjures up images of great natural beauty and nautical wonders. They are forested islands replete with storybook stone castles. Exquisite mahogany runabouts can be seen speeding across the placid surface of the mighty St. Lawrence. Names like Boldt, Bourne, Emery, Lyon, and Pullman are embedded in the Golden Age of the area, and it all comes to life in this pictorial history of the river. Images of America: Wooden Boats of the St. Lawrence River tells the story of the rich and powerful men who constructed castles and built classic wooden boats in the Thousand Islands. At the center of the story loom David and Charlie Lyon. A descendant of the Lyon family, David Kunz, tells this story through historical photographs. David is the great-great-nephew of Charles Potter Lyon and Helen Griffin Lyon. Bill Simpson, whose first visit to the Thousand Islands was in the fall of 1976, is a novelist and publisher of Simpson Books. The majority of the photographs in this book are from the Lyon Archives on Oak Island"--

This WWII military history vividly recounts the Royal Air Force campaign to counter Germany’s V2 rocket attacks. On September 8th, 1944, the first V2 rockets aimed at southern England exploded in west London. They had been launched from a wooded street corner in Den Haag in the Netherlands. Air Marshal Roderic Hill of Fighter Command ordered a swift response to counter the threat. Six squadrons of Spitfires were sent to find and dive-bomb the mobile V2 launch sites scattered throughout the Dutch countryside. The missiles were well camouflaged and often positioned adjacent to dwellings occupied by civilians. The RAF was under orders to cause minimum damage to Dutch property and life, therefore precision bombing became a necessity. This complete account of the campaign includes discussions of the strategy and tactics employed and the equipment used. It also considers the effects on Dutch civilians. Bill Simpson draws on the experiences of sixteen Allied pilots, ground crew and the Dutch who were at the receiving-end of the attacks.

First published in 1973. In this study, the author adopts a historical approach, tracing the evolution of socialist thinking during the past century and relating this to the growth of the union movement. The Taff Vale judgement, the Osborne judgement, the roles of the SDF, the Fabians, and the ILP - these episodes are re-examined from a novel perspective, and the historical material is frequently illuminated by the use of contemporary analogies. The second half of the book presents an analytical study of differing union political theories and attitudes against the modern industrial background. Here the Marxist case is studied in depth and contrasted with the views of the Social Democrats. The author then considers the ownership and control of the economy, industrial relations, prices and incomes and inflation, making it clear where he feels the movement should stand on the key political issues of today. Finally, the book suggests the way in which the Labour Party and the trade unions should organise for power in the country.
