The conflict between conservatives and liberals over public economic policy appears to have become a permanent feature of the American political landscape. Conservatives seek economic solutions with the market as virtually the sole organizing economic principle, invoking individualism inspired by the Declaration of Independences right to the pursuit of happiness. Liberals look to an important economic role for a federal government established by the Constitution to promote the general welfare. In addition to the disagreement among the political class, there is also no agreement among economists, with no model reliably predicting the economic crises of recent decades. Under these circumstances, the author believes individualism and the concern for the common good may only be reconciled through policies which promote equality of opportunity or, as Abraham Lincoln expressed it, equal privileges in the race of life, with all its desirable human aspirations. The reconciliation of individualism and the common good is developed through reviews of the meaning of liberty, happiness, and their economic implications. The historical performance of the American economy is described in the context of the evolution of American federal government from one of limited economic scope, supporting laissez-faire capitalism, to the current mixed government. The more expansive role of government is described in terms of taxation policy and spending, including concerns over the national debt and its significance. With this background, the general reader is invited to follow the authors path to a policy of equality of opportunity with specific proposals for an end to poverty, assistance to children, assistance to postsecondary education and training, and commitments to social and medical security. A specific taxation policy is proposed to fund these programs while maintaining a prudent and manageable national debt. Associated with these proposals are reforms to make the federal government more representative of the people.

John Sullivan Dwight (1813-93) was for much of the nineteenth century America's leading music critic. Born into a musical family and educated at several premiere Boston schools, he fell under the spell of New England Transcendentalism during which time he befriended Ralph Waldo Emerson, Elizabeth Palmer Peabody, Margaret Fuller, George Ripley, and others of a similarly progressive mindset. Dwight resided at the socialist/utopian community of Brook Farm where he learned the art of journalism and the business of publishing while writing for The Harbinger. He wrote on many topics-Transcendentalism, of course, but especially on music and musical performance. Dwight was a skilled communicator, and he conveyed ideas powerfully, persuasively, and constantly in language that had recently been given verve by German Romanticism and Emersonian Transcendentalism. When Brook Farm collapsed, Dwight's professional prospects ran desperately low. After several years as a journeyman writer, he launched in 1852 his own Dwight's Journal of Music: A Paper of Art and Literature, a newspaper that firmly established him as a serious music critic. The Journal was published regularly until 1881. It was and remains an important periodical. In its own time, it spoke to America's growing appetite for art music; today it is indispensable for research into nineteenth-century American classical music, especially in Boston. This biography follows Dwight's fascinating life as he meets and writes about some of the era's most crucial intellectuals and musicians. His enormous body of essays, reviews, and translations, much of it illuminated here, leads to the conclusion that Dwight the Music Critic and Dwight the Transcendentalist are inseparable"--

The petrographic database consists of 705 maceral analyses, reflectance measurements, and density and porosity determinations from Utah coal samples. These data were collected by the Utah Geological Survey from 1982 to 1995. Samples were collected from seven of Utah's 22 coal fields. Coal fields sampled are the Book Cliffs (182 samples), Wasatch Plateau (262 samples), Emery (41 samples), Sego (27 samples), Henry Mountains (173 samples), Kaiparowits Plateau (12 samples), and Coalville (four samples). The data are sorted by coal-field names; within each field the analyses are arranged alphabetically by coal-bed name to facilitate comparison. The aim of the database is to provide the industry with information on petrographic properties of Utah coals. In addition, it should help the coal operators and purchasers to determine the best uses for Utah coals.

Courses that study vectors and elementary matrix theory and introduce linear transformations have proliferated greatly in recent years. Most of these courses are taught at the undergraduate level as part of, or adjacent to, the second-year calculus sequence. Although many students will ultimately find the material in these courses more valuable than calculus, they often experience a class that consists mostly of learning to implement a series of computational algorithms. The objective of this text is to bring a different vision to this course, including many of the key elements called for in current mathematics-teaching reform efforts. Three of the main components of this current effort are the following: 1. Mathematical ideas should be introduced in meaningful contexts, with after a clear understanding formal definitions and procedures developed of practical situations has been achieved. 2. Every topic should be treated from different perspectives, including the numerical, geometric, and symbolic viewpoints. 3. The important ideas need to be visited repeatedly throughout the term, with students' understan9ing deepening each time. This text was written with these three objectives in mind. The first two chapters deal with situations requiring linear functions (at times, locally linear functions) or linear ideas in geometry for their understanding. These situations provide the context in which the formal mathematics is developed, and they are returned to with increasing sophistication throughout the text.
