The decade of the fifties may have been the last to allow children to be children. Childhood in the fifties was innocent, happy, and carefree. Author Bill Ramsey was a child who grew up in that decade. In Billy the Kid (From Houston-Not Texas) he recalls those times and the townspeople, teachers, and neighbors in Houston, Pennsylvania. Ramsey and his family lived in a modest home in this small town in western Pennsylvania, where the townspeople helped him to become a man. His adult values and philosophies were shaped by that experience. This biographical memoir recounts the simple existence of children in the fifties, with the pick-up ball games, bike riding, and spontaneous play that today's children have replaced with television, the Internet and video games. It was a time when families ate meals together and fast food restaurants did not exist. It was a time when everyone knew his neighbors. The vignettes offered in Billy the Kid honor the memory of those carefree days and the joys of childhood. Although we can't return to those years, we can return to a simpler way of life that can be sustained and enjoyed.
Sam Houston is a Texas icon. General Houston signed the Texas Declaration of Independence on his 43rd birthday, and six weeks later he led the Texas Army to a spectacular victory at San Jacinto. "Old Sam Jacinto" twice was elected president of the Republic of Texas; he served thirteen years as U.S. Senator from the State of Texas; and he won election as governor of the Lone Star State. Before he came to Texas, Houston twice lived with the Cherokee. As a young army officer he was severely wounded while leading charges at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, and while still in his twenties Houston became major general of the Tennessee State Militia. In Tennessee he was elected to Congress and to the governorship, ultimately becoming the only man ever elected governor of two states. He knew and worked with fourteen consecutive U.S. presidents, from Thomas Jefferson to Abraham Lincoln, as well as Jefferson Davis, who became president of the Confederacy. Soldier, statesman, duelist, brawler, thrice married-Sam Houston lived a turbulent and controversial life filled with drama, conflict, and superlative achievements. From Houston's Virginia birthplace to his homes and grave in Huntsville, Texas, from Horseshoe Bend to San Jacinto, Bill O'Neal repeatedly has visited the sites of Sam Houston's life. O'Neal lectured about Houston for more than three decades in Texas history classes at Panola College, and the response to his public lecture on Houston as a leader at the Bob Bullock Museum inspired this book.
Texas 1969: It's a hot Houston summer, and Detective Ted Stephens is looking into a gruesome multiple homicide, an entire family killed. Even worse in the eyes of some of the cops, Ted looks to legendary Houston private-eye Clive Watson for help on the case. Watson always seems to know more than anybody else about what's happening in Houston's criminal underworld, but he's mourning the death of his wife and doesn't get around like he used to.
As a boy in Houston, Bill Sarpalius, his brothers, and their mother lived an itinerant life. Bill dug food out of trashcans, and he and his brothers moved from one school to the next. They squatted in a vacant home while their mother, affectionately called “Honey,” battled alcoholism and suicidal tendencies. In an act of desperation, she handed her three sons over to Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch north of Amarillo. At the time, Bill was thirteen years old and could not read. Life at Boys Ranch had its own set of harrowing challenges, however. He found himself living in fear of some staff and older boys. He became involved in Future Farmers of America and discovered a talent for public speaking. When he graduated, he had a hundred dollars and no place to go. He worked hard, earned a scholarship from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, and obtained a college degree. After a brief career as a teacher and in agribusiness, he won a seat in the Texas Senate. Driven by the memory of his suffering mother, he launched the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse in an effort to help people struggling with addiction. Sarpalius later served in the United States Congress. As a Lithuanian American, he took a special interest in that nation’s fight for independence from the Soviet Union. For his efforts, Sarpalius received the highest honor possible to a non-Lithuanian citizen and was named a “Grand Duke.” The Grand Duke from Boys Ranch is a unique political memoir—the story of a life full of unlikely paths that is at once heartbreaking and inspirational.

In a career that stretched from 1963 to 1977, he slugged 291 home runs, 223 of them in Houston ballparks (Colt Stadium, the Astrodome) notoriously unfriendly to power hitters. A strong-armed, speedy outfielder, Wynn was also adept at getting on base (seven times in the top 10 for on-base percentage) and then swiping a bag (225 career steals). This memoir recounts his triumphs and struggles in detail.
