In the Southeastern Conference arguably the most historic and competitive conference in all of college football the more blue-collar programs often get overshadowed by the dynasties (read: Alabama). So it has been with Vanderbilt's football history. Yet Vandy is one of the South's, and the country's, most historic universities. Not surprisingly, there are many fun, fascinating, and peculiar history. There are triumphs, like Vandy's upset of Alabama in 1969; tragedies, like the riot that ended a game in 1896; historic events, like the founding of Dudley field in 1922, still the Commodore's home. Then there are the legendary coaches and players. Players from across Vandy's history like Irby "Rabbit" Curry, Dixie Roberts, Carl Hinkle, Greet Ricketson, and Josh Cody, who excelled on both sides of the ball. Coaches like Dan MuGugin who established Vandy as a power house from the early 1900s to the 1930s, and remains the only NCAA football coach in history to win his first three games by 60 points or more. Plus, pioneers like Ray Morrison who helped establish Vandy football, serving as player and coach.
Let’s Cross Before Dark... A History of the Ferries, Fords and River Crossings of Texas The state of Texas claims over 12,000 named rivers and streams stretching approximately 80,000 linear miles within its boundaries. In this book, Bill Winsor identifies and locates over 550 named river crossings within the state that once served as vital destinations for Native Americans, European explorers, and Mexican and American soldiers and colonists. Winsor has catalogued their origins and histories. Included in the work are maps of major rivers and their crossings as well as select images of early ferry operations of Texas. In addition to an alpha index of the crossings, the 625-page book presents an in-depth examination of the roles principal rivers and their crossings assumed in the framing of Texas history. Each of its fourteen chapters explores the founding of these various sites and the characters that brought them to life. This information, under one cover, presents an incomparable resource for future generations to better understand and appreciate the historical relevance of these vanishing theaters of history.

During his playing career, a baseball player's every action on the field is documented--every at bat, every hit, every pitch. But what becomes of a player after he leaves the game? This exhaustive reference work briefly details the post-baseball lives of some 7,600 major leaguers, owners, managers, administrators, umpires, sportswriters, announcers and broadcasters who are now deceased. Each entry tells the date and place of the player's birth, the number of seasons he spent in the majors, the primary position he played, the number of seasons he spent as a manager in the majors (if applicable), his post-baseball career and activities, date and cause of his death, and his final resting place.
Despite their centuries-old history and traditions, witchcraft and magic are still very much a part of modern Anglo-American culture. In Lucifer Ascending, Bill Ellis looks at modern practices that are universally defined as "occult," from commonplace habits such as carrying a rabbit's foot for good luck or using a Ouija board, to more esoteric traditions, such as the use of spell books. In particular, Ellis shows how the occult has been a common element in youth culture for hundreds of years. Using materials from little known publications and archives, Lucifer Ascending details the true social function of individuals' dabbling with the occult. In his survey of what Ellis terms "vernacular occultism," the author is poised on a middle ground between a skeptical point of view that defines belief in witchcraft and Satan as irrational and an interpretation of witchcraft as an underground religion opposing Christianity. Lucifer Ascending examines the occult not as an alternative to religion but rather as a means for ordinary people to participate directly in the mythic realm.
The author of Mafia Confidant presents a "deft blend of fact and fiction . . . well above the ordinary" (Associated Press) in a page-turning thriller based on the JFK assassination. Reporter Matt Eastman is on the run. He had nothing to do with the plot to kill Kennedy, but he knows who did--and that means he knows too much.
Bill Schroder is the stuff of which teaching legends are made. Strict, yet kind and tolerant, he blended a magic mix of care and discipline to bring out the best in his pupils. In A Headmaster's Story, Bill shares the story of his life, offering many insights into the challenges and rewards of teaching. He describes how he was a natural leader, and that helping young people realise their potential was his life's calling. Bill also charts how his teaching philosophy developed as he taught at and led a variety of schools, including SACS, Western Province Prep, Rondebosch Boys', Westerford, Rhodes High, Pinelands High in Cape Town and York High in George. When he was appointed head of Pretoria Boys High in 1990, Bill took on the challenge of leading one of the country's top state schools and soon earned the undying admiration of pupils, parents, staff and Old Boys alike. At the end of a long and distinguished career, he did not rest on his laurels but went back into the fray, helping to mentor a struggling township high school. Here is a teacher who has left an indelible mark on thousands of pupils, from Cape Town to Pretoria.
Chairman at the Board is an intimate, funny, and absorbing look at the music business by an insider who has recorded a host of the greatest musical artists from the 1970s to today. Bill Schnee takes the reader inside the studio—behind the curtain—and through the decades with a cavalcade of famous artists as he helped them to realize their vision. After his high school band was dropped by Decca Records, Schnee began his quest to learn everything he could about making records. Mentored by technical guru Toby Foster, mastering guru Doug Sax, and recording legend Richie Podolor at his American Recording Studio, he immediately began recording the top acts of the day as a freelance engineer/producer in Hollywood. Clive Davis soon hired him to work for CBS where he partnered with famed music producer Richard Perry. Schnee went on to record and/or mix many of Perry's biggest albums of the '70s and '80s, including those by Barbra Streisand, Carly Simon, Ringo Starr, Art Garfunkel, and the Pointer Sisters. With his deft personal touch with musicians, he continued to engineer and/or produce the likes of Marvin Gaye, Thelma Houston (the Grammy-nominated, direct-to-disc album I've Got the Music in Me), Pablo Cruise, Neil Diamond, Boz Scaggs, the Jacksons, Huey Lewis and the News, Dire Straits, and Whitney Houston. With over 125 gold and platinum records, and two Grammys for Steely Dan's Aja and Gaucho, Schnee has been called a living legend—recognized and respected in the industry as the consummate music man with an incomparable career that he lovingly shares with his readers in humorous detail.

National governments and multi-national institutions are spending unprecedented amounts of money on ICT on improving the overall quality of school learning, and schools are increasingly expected to prepare young people for a global economy in which inter-cultural understanding will be a priority. This book explores and analyzes the ways ICT has been used to promote citizenship and community cohesion in projects that link together schools in different parts of the world. It examines the theoretical framework behind such work and shows the impact of initiatives in the Middle East, Canada, the USA, England, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and elsewhere in the European Union. This is a critical examination of the technologies that have been deployed, the professional development that has been provided and an evaluation of what constitutes good practice, particularly in terms of what collaborative learning really means for young people. Many of these initiatives have enabled young people to develop more positive relations with culturally and religiously different neighbours, but this work has just begun. Continuing international tensions over matters of identity and faith require that we better understand the political context for such work so that we might shape future directions more deliberately and more clearly.

Bill Lively takes a newspaper reporters approach to looking back at his lifefocusing on who, what, where, when, why, and how. Every important answer revolves around his late wife, Nancy Dorsey, the most beautiful woman he ever met who gave him four children, and who in turn had seven children of their own. He has often wondered how different life would be if he had not been asked to come to Louisville to play football and if Nancys grandfather had not asked her to help him tend to his house. Without those two things, the couple would probably have never met. He also looks back at his upbringing and the many years he spent as an auditor, which required determining the condition, cause, and effect of an item being examined. In many ways, it was similar to analyzing his own lifethe main condition was his marriage, the cause was how the marriage came about, and the effects were children, grandchildren, and eventually future descendants. Join Bill as he pays tribute to his wife and celebrates his family and the friends he made on his journey in this inspiring autobiography.
