Chicago is confronting a racial reckoning that we explain with an exclusion-containment theory of legal cynicism. Mayors RJ and RM Daley used public and private funds to exclude and contain South and West side predominantly Black neighborhoods where police Detective Jon Burge supervised torture of over 100 Black men. A 1982 case involved Andrew Wilson's tortured confession to two police killings. This case coincided with RM Daley's pursuit of White votes in an early and unsuccessful primary campaign for mayor. Suspicions about Daley's connection to Wilson's confession lasted throughout his career. As State's Attorney, Daley mobilized a massive assault on "gangs, guns, and drugs" by tightening law enforcement methods. An example involved the Automatic Transfer Act used to prosecute 15 year-old Joseph White in adult court for shooting a fellow student. The judge thought White should have sought help from police, but he and his family knew the police as brutal occupiers of local neighborhoods. White was sentenced to 45 years in a maximum-security prison. Jon Burge was finally convicted in 2010-of perjury-but he served only three years, while many of his victims remained on death row. In a sidebar in the Burge trial-unheard by jurors-the judge refused to allow evidence about a racialized code of silence that concealed Burge's torture. Our book ends by explaining how Daley and Burge escaped meaningful punishment through the code of silence and out of court settlements. These remain unrelenting sources of the racial reckoning confronting this quintessential American city"--

What happened to Mack while in surgery, and what childhood event could be a gateway that changed everything? No one expects a "Do-Over" in life. Mack didn't expect it. The question is, did he take it?

Bill went on to set up the Firlane Motor Company which became the biggest Ford dealership in Ireland. In 1986 he took over the troubled Renault car distribution franchise from Waterford Crystal. His turnaround of that company into what is now the Glencullen Group is a business success story-the group now has an annual turnover of 250 million. Bill Cullen's story is an account of incredible poverty and deprivation in the Dublin slums. It highlights the frustration of a father and mother feeling their relationship crumble as they fight to give their children a better life. It's a story of courage, joy, and happiness--of how a mother gave inspiration and values to her children, saying to them, "The best thing I can give you is the independence to stand on your own feet." Adam Granger self-published the first edition of Granger’s Fiddle Tunes for Guitar in 1979. A second edition was published in 1994. Now, in 2022, Mel Bay Publications presents the third edition of the book now in standard notation. This 248-page book is the most extensive and best-documented collection of fiddle tunes in existence, and includes reels, hoedowns, hornpipes, rags, breakdowns, jigs and slip-jigs, presented in Southern, Northern, Irish, Canadian, Texas and Old-time styles. There are 508 fiddle tunes referenced under 2500 titles and alternate titles. The titles are fully indexed, making the book doubly valuable as a reference book and a source book. The book comes with a link which gives access to MP3 recordings by Adam of all 508 tunes, each played once at a moderate tempo, with rhythm on one channel and lead on the other. Also included in The Granger’s Collection are descriptions of tune types presented in the book, and primers on traditional flatpicking and rhythm guitar. Additionally, there are sections on timing, ornamentation, technique, and fingering, as well as information on tune sources and a history of the collection.

This report contains the final directions and recommendations of the Select Committee on the High Speed 2 Phase One Hybrid Bill after 160 days of sittings over nearly two years. Our responsibility was to hear petitions from those specially and directly affected by the Bill and, where we believed it was appropriate, to suggest modifications, assurances, undertakings or mitigation to address petitioners' concerns. The Committee directed a number of amendments to the proposed HS2 Phase One project. Notably they have directed a longer Chilterns bored tunnel, greater noise protection for Wendover, better construction arrangements in Hillingdon, and a remodelled maintenance depot at Washwood Heath to maximise local job opportunities. There should be a coherent approach to the redevelopment of Euston. In many cases not specifically mentioned in this report we have intervened to encourage fairness, practical settlements, the giving of assurances, or better mitigation. The Committee recommended amendments to the operation of the discretionary compensation schemes which they believe will result in greater fairness and a more functional property market in areas near to the proposed line. They also suggest improvements to the procedure for dealing with hybrid bills.

"Stand-up comedy has exploded in the last couple of years," a club owner told the Chicago Tribune in 1985, "that's the only way to describe it: exploded." All revolutionary movements since 1789 have looked instinctively to the French model. In this book, Bill Mc Cormack demonstrates that the French influence in Ireland was indeed profound, especially in the years leading up to the Easter Rising. However, it was not the traditions of the Tennis Court Oath or Bastille Day that motivated the Irish rebels, but a new French Catholic nationalism which reached its apogee with the Dreyfus Affair (1895) and which pervaded literature as well as politics. This was a complex reactionary movement, partly religiose, partly royalist, and anti-modern. In Ireland, its influence was advanced through the thought of individual visitors, through Catholic teaching orders, and through a vigorous periodical press. The 'blood sacrifice' rhetoric of Patrick Pearse and (eventually) James Connolly owes more to Maurice Barres than to Wolfe Tone. Connolly's use of the sympathetic strike derives from Georges Sorel's syndicalism. Mc Cormack examines how the formerly anti-clerical Irish Republican Brotherhood was in effect re-baptised by a French-inspired Catholic mission, which even absorbed Pearse's English and agnostic father. He explores the wealth of French material published by Thomas MacDonagh and J. M. Plunkett in The Irish Review (1911-1914), and traces the long campaign of The Catholic Bulletin to convert the rebel dead into martyrs. Finally, he discusses how the anti-democratic undertow of 1916 breaks out again in 1939 with the IRA's bombing campaign in England.
