In Social Work and the Third Way, Bill Jordan provides an accessible and lively analysis of the tensions between ′toughness′ and ′love′ in the Third Way′s political philosophy, and the problems of implementing New Labour′s programme. He looks at the government′s reliance on face-to-face methods for activating citizens and changing their behaviour in many of its initiatives. On the one hand, New Labour places a surprising amount of faith in the ability of counsellors and advisers to bring about the changes it requires; yet it is highly suspicious of the public sector in general, and local authorities in particular, as part of the ′forces of conservatism′ in the UK. Hence it spawns new agencies and projects, often with a strong enforcement ethos, and regulates the whole implementation process through strict top-down surveillance. In all this, professional social work, and local authority social services, are relegated to a tightly circumscribed role in social care. The author argues for a new, more generous and expansive approach to practice, which can do justice to the challenges of change under New Labour′s regime and in doing so Social Work and the Third Way provides an important and topical contribution to the debate on the future of the Welfare State and will be essential reading for students and researchers in social work, social policy and politics.

2019 SABR Baseball Research Award Few people have influenced a team as much as did Tom Yawkey (1903-76) as owner of the Boston Red Sox. After purchasing the Red Sox for $1.2 million in 1932, Yawkey poured millions into building a better team and making the franchise relevant again. Although the Red Sox never won a World Series under Yawkey's ownership, there were still many highlights. Lefty Grove won his three hundredth game; Jimmie Foxx hit fifty home runs; Ted Williams batted .406 in 1941, and both Williams and Carl Yastrzemski won Triple Crowns. Yawkey was viewed by fans as a genial autocrat who ran his ball club like a hobby more than a business and who spoiled his players. He was perhaps too trusting, relying on flawed cronies rather than the most competent executives to run his ballclub. One of his more unfortunate legacies was the accusation that he was a racist, since the Red Sox were the last Major League team to integrate, and his inaction in this regard haunted both him and the team for decades. As one of the last great patriarchal owners in baseball, he was the first person elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame who hadn't been a player, manager, or general manager. Bill Nowlin takes a close look at Yawkey's life as a sportsman and as one of the leading philanthropists in New England and South Carolina. He also addresses Yawkey's leadership style and issues of racism during his tenure with the Red Sox.

Was he a mad-genius prankster, an alien, ghost, animal, or the devil himself? With all of today’s fantastic characters, creatures, and machines, Spring Heeled Jack might not seem all that incredible. However, if you had lived in the time period that he lurked about and was misfortunate enough to encounter him, this event might have been a life-altering experience. Several people of that time were witness to this phenomenon and were affected by something that has never been explained. I have attempted to regress the reader back to when the horse was still a common mode of transportation and streets were lit by gas. While my characters are all fictional, remember that Spring Heeled Jack was the real deal.

For all the good intentions of this great nation, the wealthy have been allowed to pervert the entire notion of equality. In this book, you will discover how wealth was used to control and manipulate people in power, as well as the general public. At the turn of the twentieth century, the great heist began in earnest. And while capitalism and the free enterprise system appear worthy of a great nation and people, it is through the corrupt underbelly that the wealthy rule supreme. The history of Philadelphia television is the history of television in America. Philo Farnsworth, credited with inventing television, performed some of his earliest experiments at the Franklin Institute and at 1230 Mermaid Lane. Those experiments led to the city's first television station, W3XE. Channel 3 was also the first local station in the country to broadcast in color. WCAU-TV Channel 10 constructed the first building in the world designed specifically as a television station. WFIL created one of the most iconic shows in television history, American Bandstand, as well as Action News, which has helped Channel 6 stay on top of the ratings for most of the last 40 years. Dick Clark, Ed McMahon, Ernie Kovacs, Tom Snyder, David Brenner, Maury Povich, Kelly Ripa, Brian Williams, and others are among those who have worked in Philadelphia television throughout its history.

This is a fast moving adventure story of a British youth, Bill McCann, born in India who joins the Royal Indian Navy in the forties. He was involved in the Royal Indian Naval Mutiny of 1946 and describes a hurricane in which his ship was almost lost. He recalls his involvement in the passion of the romances while ashore. He goes on to explain where he was and what he was doing at the time of the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi. He tells of his experience of a number of post war cruises. He describes his involvement of the romances while ashore. He witnesses and tells of the partition of the Royal Indian Navy into separate navies for two independent countries. He has love affairs with women in most ports but his main ambition is to leave the harsh discipline of the naval life behind him. After seven years in the navy he fulfills his ambition and joins a passenger ship where his exploits with women passengers and stewardesses all but kill him. He signs off the ship and returns to England contemplating a monk like existence only to discover that he cannot hide from the temptations of the flesh that surrounds him. He now comes to the conclusion that the escapades in his life are too much for him. After much thought he develops quite a successful plan on how to combat the situation. The plan eventually changes his whole way of life thereby allowing him to live a normal life.

The British officer class in 1914 benefited from the discipline instilled by public schools. Thomas Morland was one such officer. Born in Canada, he was orphaned at the age of five. He became a widower with two daughters at a young age. In October 1914 he went to France to command the 5th Division, then south of Ypres. Morland served on the Somme and Messines & Third Ypres, and in 1918 he commanded a corps during the victorious 100 Days campaign. Morland’s diaries record the above events and his comments thereon, every day for four years, beginning at the Battle of La Bassee, near Ypres. He was parachuted in while the battle was raging and held the shaken division together during the second half of October. A modest man, he was surprised by his promotion to lieutenant-general in 1915. Morland led X Corps at the beginning of the Somme campaign in July 1916 but was replaced by General Gough, his army chief, who thought Morland was not sufficiently decisive. During 1917 he took part in the successful Battle of Messines on 7 June, a ‘Red Letter’ day, and the attrition of the Third Battle of Ypres from July to November. Morland ended the war in pursuit of the retreating Germans, in November 1918. A sense of realism permeates his diary, with comments like 'The war has simply become a process of attrition' in 1915 and 'We cannot expect men to advance to attack in mud up to the waist!' in 1917. During his time away from home, he wrote regularly to his daughters, in whom he confided his hopes and fears. His love for them shines through the pages, reflecting the man behind the uniform. Morland – Great War Corps Commander is the first book to publish the papers of an officer of his rank. With many original accounts of major battles, this is a book that will appeal to military history enthusiasts everywhere.
