Life Inside Prisons: Insights into the daily life of prisoners, including rehabilitation programs, the plight of undertrial prisoners, and the unique challenges faced by women and juvenile detainees. Prison Reforms: An examination of the efforts made to reform the prison system in India, including government initiatives, the role of NGOs, and the challenges of implementing sustainable changes. Comparative Analysis: A look at how India's prison system compares with those of other countries, drawing lessons from international standards and best practices. Future Directions: The book concludes with thoughtful recommendations for policymakers, legal practitioners, and civil society on how to continue the momentum of prison reforms to ensure the dignity and rights of all prisoners are upheld. This book is an essential resource for legal professionals, human rights activists, policymakers, and anyone interested in the justice system. It not only serves as a legal reference but also as a call to action for continuous improvement in the treatment of prisoners, emphasizing the importance of upholding human dignity within the criminal justice system. With its comprehensive coverage and detailed presentation of the Supreme Court's interventions, "Prisoners and Prisons in India" stands as a significant contribution to the discourse on human rights and prison reform in India.
Why are Maoist, Naxalite and Left extremist movements taking root in the most backward and underdeveloped regions of South Asia? This book examines this multi-layered question in democracies such as India and Nepal through an analysis of these movements as well as their leaderships and ideologies. Through a series of detailed interviews and dialogues, it sheds fresh light into the minds and actions of people who have critically defined the nature of Maoism and related movements in the region. Weaving together diverse narratives, voices, and streams of dissent, this first-of-its-kind volume brings cohesion to the seemingly fragmented but formidable Maoist politics in South Asia. It also highlights how such ‘civil wars’ are embedded into the larger politics of the region. Perceptive and lucid, this book will be of great interest to scholars and researchers of politics, sociology, peace and conflict studies, and security studies, especially those concerned with Maoism and social movements. It will also be useful to government institutions and policy-makers.
This book contains stories. The stories contain information and lessons. The information and lessons are coated in simple language and humor. The idea of this book is to provide information about the working of bridge engineers in field covering their struggles, joy, triumphs and failures. Many a mistake mentioned in the book appears silly, but real people do these mistakes in real life, often with tragic consequences. Since the information is provided in the form of stories, the readers will find it easy to get the message, and to retain it. It is meant to be a resource for the fresh engineers, for the students and for people interested in civil engineering or asset management. Designers and academicians who don’t get much exposure to the field conditions will also find this book extremely useful. This book, thus, bridges the gaps between theory and practice, between field and design office and between the freshman and experienced people. And so, it is aptly named as ‘Stories That Bridge’.
Minds Without Fear is an intellectual and cultural history of India during the period of British occupation. It demonstrates that this was a period of renaissance in India in which philosophy--both in the public sphere and in the Indian universities--played a central role in the emergence of a distinctively Indian modernity. This is also a history of Indian philosophy. It demonstrates how the development of a secular philosophical voice facilitated the construction of modern Indian society and the consolidation of the nationalist movement. Authors Nalini Bhushan and Jay Garfield explore the complex role of the English language in philosophical and nationalist discourse, demonstrating both the anxieties that surrounded English, and the processes that normalized it as an Indian vernacular and academic language. Garfield and Bhushan attend to both Hindu and Muslim philosophers, to public and academic intellectuals, to artists and art critics, and to national identity and nation-building. Also explored is the complex interactions between Indian and European thought during this period, including the role of missionary teachers and the influence of foreign universities in the evolution of Indian philosophy. This pattern of interaction, although often disparaged as "inauthentic" is continuous with the cosmopolitanism that has always characterized the intellectual life of India, and that the philosophy articulated during this period is a worthy continuation of the Indian philosophical tradition.
Tilak was born in the year 1856 and died in the year 1920. He was a paramount figure in the freedom struggle. Hundred years have passed since his death. But today, Bharat needs him more than ever. This book is a dovetail of Tilak's thoughts and the concept of self-reliance. The author of this nook firmly believes that, among all possible paths, the path of self-reliance is the only one that brings about the material, moral and cultural renascence of a dormant nation and raises it to the greatest level by peaceful revolution.
Born in 1925, Shanti Bhushan was witness to the formative years of the Indian republic. Courting Destiny traces the remarkable story of his life---the family's origins in the town of Bijnor in the United Provinces, the experience of growing up in a joint family in Allahabad, initial encounters with the law when the Constitution of India was being framed, the distinguished career as a lawyer and law minister, culminating in the campaign for judicial accountability. These memoirs provide a participant's account of some of the most interesting and seminal cases that laid the foundations of India's constitutional history. They include the Keshav Singh case of 1964 which led to the first standoff between the executive and the judiciary; Indira Gandhi's election case which unseated her as prime minister, leading to the imposition of the Emergency; the habeas corpus case where the Supreme Court declared that during an emergency there is no right to life or liberty and hence no recourse against illegal detention; and the parliament attack case in which the Supreme Court, while acquitting Shaukat Guru of all charges of conspiracy, convicted him on a charge for which he was never accused. Together, they offer a broad perspective of the evolution of Indian law and the interpretation of the Constitution. Courting Destiny affords us a glimpse of the many fundamental and far-reaching political and constitutional changes that took place in the decades following independence. The descriptions of Shanti Bhushan's brief involvement in party politics and his time as law minister in the post-Emergency Janata government make for a fascinating insider's account of an important phase of the nation's life. In this narration of the author's life and work, the personal, the professional and the public unfold seamlessly, never at the cost of one or the other. Written in a direct and engaging style, laced with gentle humour, Courting Destiny will appeal to all those interested in India's legal, constitutional and political history. At a time when both the Bar and the Bench are under a cloud, the illustrious sixty-year career of Shanti Bhushan will be a source of inspiration for young advocates.

Together, they scripted some of the most famous victories in the history of Indian cricket. While it was a collective team effort that led to the success and the contribution of other players were equally crucial, but it would not have been possible without this strong batting line-up. With the emergence of Fab Five, the days when India’s batting had a huge dependency on Tendulkar’s shoulders was a thing of the past. Each member of the Fab Five could win the match single-handedly on their day. Ganguly’s lofted sixes, Sehwag’s aggression, Tendulkar’s impeccable straight drives, Laxman’s artistry and Dravid’s assuring defense were a treat to the eyes of the cricket fans. It is a humble tribute to these five legends and a celebration of their contribution to Indian cricket.
