Humans are exclusively gifted by nature with some anatomical features that give humans an immense capacity to render complex speech. The book explores origin of speech right from the Hyoid bone that exalted human communication into a higher orbit, and then moves onto science and technology behind the development of communication, leading finally to the emergence of mass media, i.e., newspapers. It covers Gutenberg’s marvelous machine which printed Martin Luther’s Ninety-five Theses, the first voice of dissent in the world against the most powerful Catholic Church. 17th century natural philosopher Francis Bacon recognized three great technological innovations: the magnetic compass, the printing press and gunpowder as the distinguishing achievements of modern man. The present book discusses in detail one of the epoch-making inventions: the printing press and its natural progression into newspapers, its impact on societies of the world, its struggle to align itself against the worst of maneuvers to silence the press in the different time spans of history. What remains of the “national” when the nation unravels at the birth of the independent state? The political truncation of India at the end of British colonial rule in 1947 led to a social cataclysm in which roughly one million people died and ten to twelve million were displaced. Combining film studies, trauma theory, and South Asian cultural history, Bhaskar Sarkar follows the shifting traces of this event in Indian cinema over the next six decades. He argues that Partition remains a wound in the collective psyche of South Asia and that its representation on screen enables forms of historical engagement that are largely opaque to standard historiography. Sarkar tracks the initial reticence to engage with the trauma of 1947 and the subsequent emergence of a strong Partition discourse, revealing both the silence and the eventual “return of the repressed” as strands of one complex process. Connecting the relative silence of the early decades after Partition to a project of postcolonial nation-building and to trauma’s disjunctive temporal structure, Sarkar develops an allegorical reading of the silence as a form of mourning. He relates the proliferation of explicit Partition narratives in films made since the mid-1980s to disillusionment with post-independence achievements, and he discusses how current cinematic memorializations of 1947 are influenced by economic liberalization and the rise of a Hindu-chauvinist nationalism. Traversing Hindi and Bengali commercial cinema, art cinema, and television, Sarkar provides a history of Indian cinema that interrogates the national (a central category organizing cinema studies) and participates in a wider process of mourning the modernist promises of the nation form.

Powered by a rapidly expanding economy and a favorable demographic trend, India charted its own course to success with a few assertive steps for an optimistic future. Change was more glaring in India during this period when it came to politics. From several surprising debuts to quite a few shocking election wins, the last decade witnessed a massive change in the political situation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi came to power with a thumping victory in 2014 and was re-elected for a second term in 2019 with an even bigger margin. The Congress, on the other hand, was reduced to nothing. Whether it was the revocation of Article 370 or the Ram Mandir verdict, the politico-religious landscape changed a lot in these ten years. These mutable dynamics with shifting of the political narrative from liberal to the right meant one thing: the government would be decisive in action and would not hesitate from taking radical steps if something was in the national interest. Imposing the GST, demonetization were the radical steps taken which had its share of miseries as well. This book is a throwback to those episodic events – economic, social, political, and developmental plus a sundry lot.

This book deals with 11 outstanding victories of the Indian Army; Shalateng, Rajauri and Zoji La from the Kashmir War 1947-48; Chusul from the 1962 Chinese War; Hajipir, Assal Uttar and Phillora from the lndo-Pak War 1965 and Bayra, Sylhet, Basantar and Dacca from the lndo-Pak War 1971. The book narrates the background and conduct of these battles. It also tries to analyse the factors that contributed to these outstanding victories.
