Building in Words explores the relation between text and architecture in the Roman world from a new angle. Ancient Roman viewers were not only confronted with finished monuments, but also frequently with buildings under construction. They experienced noisy building work, disruptive transportation of materials, and sometimes spectacular engineering feats. This book analyses how Roman writers responded to the process of building and construction in their works. For Roman authors, telling stories of architectural creation served to give meaning to finished monuments. Representing a building's construction might encourage admiration of its artistry, cost, or labour. On the other hand, it could also highlight morally problematic aspects of construction, especially in connection with large-scale engineering projects. In offering descriptions of the process of creating architecture, writers also reflect on the creation of their own works. The metaphor of construction for literary composition is polyvalent: writers use it to comment on the aesthetics or ambition of their literary work, to articulate the power and durability, but also the fragility of literature. This monograph places literary texts of the early Roman empire in dialogue with epigraphic and archaeological material. Different people feel different emotions when they are diagnosed with cancer. Both today and a century ago, fear and hope, shame and disgust, sadness and joy are and were the emotions experienced by many cancer patients and their loved ones. But these emotions do not just have significance for the people who feel them. They have also exerted a surprisingly profound influence on how hospitals and laboratories dealt with cancer, how early detection campaigns portrayed it, and how doctors talked about it with their patients. Bettina Hitzer details the history of cancer and emotions in twentieth-century Germany and thus follows the cancer-associated transformations of emotional regimes, emotional politics, and emotional experiences through five different political systems. In doing so, the study underscores that political caesuras resonate in the immediate corporeality of the history of emotions.
Knowledge about distances---along with knowledge about spatial direction---is one of the most important fundamentals for a cognitive agent's orientation, navigation, and route planning. However, only some distances can be perceived directly. Therefore, knowledge about distances must often be inferred from other sources of information. In cognitive science research on spatial cognition, this is investigated in different ways, using empirical studies, computer simulations, and knowledge representation approaches. This book presents a comprehensive interdisciplinary study of human distance cognition. It discusses results on knowledge about distances from artificial intelligence research and cognitive psychology, proposing an integrating formal framework. Focusing on knowledge about route distances, it then presents a computational model of the way in which humans infer knowledge about distances in environmental spaces like cities or buildings.
