Located in southeastern Jefferson County, Jeffersontown came into being in the late 1700s as a stopover for early pioneers on their way to the port city of Louisville. Recognizing the excellent farming potential of the land, many people decided the area was the perfect place to settle, and in 1794, Abraham Bruner determined it was also a prime location to build a city. Residents referred to their new community as "Brunerstown," but it was officially named "Jeffersontown" in 1797, when it was incorporated as a city. It immediately became a hub of activity, with businesses lining its square and scattered throughout the surrounding areas. The growth of this charming city has never ceased.

Lange has recently returned from a tour of duty with an oil exploration and pipeline company in the Near East. He had been incarcerated in an Arab jail for a number of months under almost inhumane conditions. Wrongly. While in the Arabian jail, to preserve his sanity, Lange had developed the ability to induce OOBE's. He didn't understand what was happening to him, he thought they were merely hallucinations. The setting is the Gulf Coast of Mississippi in the late 1980's when the U.S. oil giants had pulled out of the Arabian Gulf area. He was now back in the States looking for a job. Rhyme, a lovely young woman, is the ward and 'strong right arm' of George Westwood, an entrepreneur involved with the development of a fabulous new technology that turns out to be a system of communication with other time frames. Rhyme hires Lange and is attracted to him in spite of the differences in their ages. She is a student of the occult and lays the Tarot cards about Lange. They promise her 'Happiness and Joy'. Rhyme seduces Lange and decides he is her soul mate. She learns that Lange can achieve these conditions. They work on it together, very successfully. On their next attempt they visit an 'Orientation Platform' in the Astral World where they meet with Rhyme's grandmother, Cynthia, who, before her death, had been a major factor in Rhyme's early life. Rhyme's mother had died at childbirth. Lange moves in with Rhyme. There are a number of excursions into the Astral realms. On two they are given rides in a UFO. The first of these is an excursion into the adjoining territories of 'Athe'. On another occasion they take a friend along and they are given a tour of the two lover levels. The 'Orientation' is on the 'third level'. We have here a pretty good guide to achieving the same results (OOBE's) by your own efforts, if you care to try these tenets and the story does not deviate for their principles.

The death penalty in classical Judaism has been a highly politicized subject in modern scholarship. Enlightenment attacks on the Talmud's legitimacy led scholars to use the Talmud's criminal law as evidence for its elevated morals. But even more pressing was the need to prove Jews' innocence of the charge of killing Christ. The reconstruction of a just Jewish death penalty was a defense against the accusation that a corrupt Jewish court was responsible for the death of Christ. In Execution and Invention, Beth A. Berkowitz tells the story of modern scholarship on the ancient rabbinic death penalty and offers a fresh perspective using the approaches of ritual studies, cultural criticism, and talmudic source criticism. Against the scholarly consensus, Berkowitz argues that the early Rabbis used the rabbinic laws of the death penalty to establish their power in the wake of the destruction of the Temple. Following recent currents in historiography, Berkowitz sees the Rabbis as an embattled, almost invisible sect within second-century Judaism. The function of their death penalty laws, Berkowitz contends, was to create a complex ritual of execution under rabbinic control, thus bolstering rabbinic claims to authority in the context of Roman political and cultural domination. Understanding rabbinic literature to be in dialogue with the Bible, with the variety of ancient Jews, and with Roman imperialism, Berkowitz shows how the Rabbis tried to create an appealing alternative to the Roman, paganized culture of Palestine's Jews. In their death penalty, the Rabbis substituted Rome's power with their own. Early Christians, on the other hand, used death penalty discourse to critique judicial power. But Berkowitz argues that the Christian critique of execution produced new claims to authority as much as the rabbinic embrace. By comparing rabbinic conversations about the death penalty with Christian ones, Berkowitz reveals death penalty discourse as a significant means of creating authority in second-century western religious cultures. Advancing the death penalty discourse as a discourse of power, Berkowitz sheds light on the central relationship between religious and political authority and the severest form of punishment.

This provocative and revisionist biographical study of von Galen views him from a different perspective: as a complex figure who moved between dissent and complicity during the Nazi regime, opposing certain elements of National Socialism while choosing to remain silent on issues concerning discrimination, deportation, and the murder of Jews. Beth Griech-Polelle places von Galen in the context of his times, describing how the Catholic Church reacted to various Nazi policies, how the anti-Catholic legislation of the Kulturkampf shaped the repertoire of resistance tactics of northwestern German Catholics, and how theological interpretations were used to justify resistance and/or collaboration. She discloses the reasons for von Galen’s public denunciation of the euthanasia project and the ramifications of his openly defiant stance. She reveals how the bishop portrayed Jews and what that depiction meant for Jews living in Nazi Germany. Outcries against the misogyny and sexism of prominent figures in the field have quickly turned to issues of racism, prompting Anglo-Saxonists to recognize an institutional, structural whiteness that not only bars the door to people of color but also prohibits scholars from confronting the very idea that race and racism operate within the field's scholarship, scholarly practices, and intellectual history. Anglo-Saxon(ist) Pasts, postSaxon Futures traces the integral role that colonialism and racism play in Anglo-Saxon studies by tracking the development of the "Anglo-Saxonist," an overtly racialized term that describes a person whose affinities point towards white nationalism. That scholars continue to call themselves "Anglo-Saxonists," despite urgent calls to combat racism within the field, suggests that this term is much more than just a professional appellative. It is, this book argues, a ghost in the machine of Anglo-Saxon studies-a spectral figure created by a group of nineteenth-century historians, archaeologists, and philologists responsible for not only framing the interdisciplinary field of Anglo-Saxon studies but for also encoding ideologies of British colonialism and Anglo-American racism within the field's methods and pedagogies.
