The subject of the present book is the theme of Edom in the Old Testament. In the four long oracles against Edom (Isa. 34, Jer. 49.7-22, Ezek. 35, Obadiah), this nation serves as Israel's antagonist and the representative of the enemy nations. Edom also appears in the book of Genesis: Jacob's brother Esau is the patriarch of the Edomites and Esau himself is called Edom as well (Gen. 25-36). Although there is no such negative estimation of Edom as in the prophecies, here too Edom represents the nations, and serves as Israel's opponent. This study discusses the origin and development of Edom's exceptional role. It extensively analyses the connections between Obadiah (the only one of the four major oracles in which, like in Genesis, Edom is called Israel's brother), the other oracles, and Genesis. It sketches the literary history of these texts and discusses the possible historical background of the conceptions they share. Can the similarities in Edom's role be explained by assuming the same historical background for the two sets of texts? If so, why do the major oracles against Edom present an extremely negative, and the Jacob-Esau stories a relatively positive picture of Edom?

Swallows enter their nests high on the white stacked walls at Indian Lodge as if the ghost/ of a remorseful pickpocket/ were slipping a wallet/ back where it come from. There is much humour here, and warmth, combined with an awareness of loss and the weight of history—all delivered in a voice distinctive in its combination of narrative, whimsy, and psychological observation.

This Korean War Naval Adventure is based on the experiences of Albert Bert Millspaugh during the Korean Conflict and his service on the minesweeper USS Heron, AMS-18, from August 1952 through August 1953. Bert was discharged from the U.S. Navy as Petty Officer Second Class, Electronic Technician (ET2), in December 1954 after serving four years in the service. Bert joined the USS Heron after completing nine months training as an Electronic Technician, ET, at the Naval Training School on Treasure Island, California. Beyond his duties as an ET repairing the ancient radar, sonar, radios, and other electronic equipment, he soon learned to steer the ship using the ships compass, to operate the radar during mine sweeping, and navigation on some of his four-hour night watches. The book covers the mine sweeping operation of a small wooden ship under the fire of North Korean guns, the explosion of nearby mines, and secret night time excursions. It includes the good times on the ship as well as the difficult and dangerous times. He once led the ship out of a wild typhoon using the ships radar and Loran navigation systems. It provides a brief history of the Korean Conflict, the names of minesweepers sunk during the war and the number of service men who died as the result, and the relation of the USS Heron with other naval ships. It concludes with the demise of the USS Heron, AMS-18 and the rise of a new minesweeper also named USS Heron.

Our purpose in writing this monograph is to give a comprehensive treatment of the subject. We define bandit problems and give the necessary foundations in Chapter 2. Many of the important results that have appeared in the literature are presented in later chapters; these are interspersed with new results. We give proofs unless they are very easy or the result is not used in the sequel. We have simplified a number of arguments so many of the proofs given tend to be conceptual rather than calculational. All results given have been incorporated into our style and notation. The exposition is aimed at a variety of types of readers. Bandit problems and the associated mathematical and technical issues are developed from first principles. Since we have tried to be comprehens ive the mathematical level is sometimes advanced; for example, we use measure-theoretic notions freely in Chapter 2. But the mathema tically uninitiated reader can easily sidestep such discussion when it occurs in Chapter 2 and elsewhere. We have tried to appeal to graduate students and professionals in engineering, biometry, econ omics, management science, and operations research, as well as those in mathematics and statistics. The monograph could serve as a reference for professionals or as a telA in a semester or year-long graduate level course.
